Why do some posters feel the need to do this?

I don't see this happening here, but I have seen it elsewhere and find it to distressing - the need that some posters feel to insult a player as a person. It makes no sense to me. If a player plays a bad match, then you tell it like it is. But, why is there a need then to say "the worse human lost", or "the better human won"? I don't understand the need for cruelty or stupidity and never have.

It's nothing to do with evolution, players cheating, or even the nature of the Internet. There are many discussion groups on the Net where the chats are vibrant, interesting, meaningful, etc. I honestly don't care if someone wants to take apart a player's match or game. If I disagree, then I say so, and offer my take on things. But, cruelty is something else. I don't understand it.

Sport is often of a very basic and tribal nature with some supporters of one side feeling the need to demonise their main rivals. Unfortunate but, for some sport fans, that's the way it is.

Murray gets most of the personal insults on this forum.
Guy had hip Surgery and 2 days later,, ppl were laughing at it and someone made a thread asking him to retire.

Murray gets the most? I’d say Rafa gets way more (sometimes deservedly)

I dont mean to be mean, but if it doesnt happen here then why complain about it here? Why not wherever it happens?

Your just going to give people here ideas!

It's who they are in their real lives. Projecting their frustrations and failures on the Internet and trying to live through the achievements of another.

Federer wasn’t really cheating getting evening matches at the AO. You have to blame AO/ITF for that, it’s better money if Fed goes all the way so of course they’ll need to pave the way for him a bit.

I agree Fed is not a player that regularly cheats. There are others.

What other ways to discuss Fedr am sureshs are there?

Dear OP
Some people are emotionally needy, deprived or misled. Others have no lives to speak of while others suffer deep psychological issues and are in denial. Whichever the case might be, they all express their personal demons by investing their emotions into sports personalities (not sports, mind you) and as such each time their favourite soortspsport fail to live up to their expectations they feel emotionally battered, traumatized or threatened subconsciously.

So they deal with it by chanelling their issues aggressively to the extent of insulting not only the players but also the players' wives and families.

We should pity these psychologically challenged people. Really, we should. Even when they respond to reasonable logical statements with bared teeth. They are suffering and they can't admit it.
