Why is the French Open so late this year?

It seems that the French Open this year is one week later than usual? Usually Nadal celebrates his birthday during the course of the FO itself but not this year.

Any idea why?

His birthday is next Sunday, right in the middle of the tournament.

Oops, made a wrong assumption based on this http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=425361

However, it still seems that the calendar this year is 1 week back? Usually RG wraps up by the first weekend of June?[/QUOTE]

I don't think so - RG is always the last week in May/first week in June with Wimby being last week in June/first week in July. USO is last week in August/1st week in September, AO is last 2 weeks in January.

These are the 'anchor points' for the entire calendar. 250s/500s/MS1000s might move around to accomodate Olympic years but the slams don't move. It's been that way for some time now.

Hmm okay.. since I thought Rome and Madrid were one week later than in the previous year (as the points dropped off early)? I don't remember there being a two week break between Madrid and RG last year. Seems strange that RG is still on the same date.

You know what mate, we could both be right. Looking at the dates, RG and Wimbledon start 5 days later than last year. In my defence, last year RG was played during the last week of May/1st week of June and Wimby was last week of June/1st week of July - but I guess there is lots flexibility within those definitions e.g. RG could finish anytime between 1st June and 7th June and still meet the definition of being played during the last week in May/1st week in June.
