Went to the atp web site looking at stats. Roddick is the top in aces service games won second serve points won ect. Yet he is 50 and below in returning 1st serve points won second serve points won break chances. So bottom line he can hold serve but can't return fix this he may win more.

the only two stats roddick cares about are service winners/aces and forehand winners. the rest of his game shows that. he says that all he has to do is hold serve and he can with all the tie breakers with his serve. if he could get out of the shell and world he lives in and work on his game in an all-around manner and address each issue with honesty and work--he could be a contender again.

but, as long as the serve and forehand are working--that is all he cares about. well, that and college chicks....

Roddick's ground game is a problem. His returning sucks, he should serve and volley more with his serve but he sucks at that.

Well... Gasquet gave him a pretty good lesson already...

I cant believe he is still ranked where he is. His game is just a serve compared to the true quality players today. It is time that Gasquet, Djokovic, and Murray boot him out of the top 5. He doesnt belong there anymore.

sure did--and i loved it. i like andy...but he sure does not really analyze his game and what he needs to improve on. he says he is working on things. but come set two or three--he continually reverts to the same old andy. yes--gasquet gave him lessons all around...!

I think this guy needs to be on everyone's radar if he is not already. when his wrist has healed...watch out once again. we keep talking about rafa, but murray sure could stir things up with his unusual game, speed, and power when he wants to deliver it.

he lulls you to sleep with rolled shots...and then...BAM! Just like Emeril--he kicks it up a notch!

Roddick doesn't have "it". The "it" that makes a great champion. I think it is a combination of desire, will power, and a satisfaction with being where he's at right now...second tier, with everybody else ranked higher than #2. The way he lost this wimby has convinced me he just doesn't really want it as bad as the other guys. You really have to love to battle if you're gonna be a good returner...especially competing with these two guys running the show.

I still don't understand how a guy can develop a serve like his, and also not develop much of a volley game behind it. I used to blame the people around him, the people who had a hand in his development, and even racquet technology...but now, I just think he is lazy.

roddick used to be a serve and a forehand. and now he is just a serve. the sad thing is he actually got better overall these past years. his game is just not good enough anymore to be #1 again. he will never be as good as federer, he can never grind as well as nadal, and his backhand---forget it. he would probably have more success if he just went for everything because that would be a change in his game. everyone has pretty much adapted to him. they know that if they get the ball back in play after the serve, that they have a chance.

I totally agree. Whilst it's been unfortunate him having this injury it could work to his advantage as it has given him time to concentrate purely on getting his fitness up to the right levels as he hasn't been able to spend much time on court. Also he had a busy first part of the year and some time away from the game to analyse how things have been going and to get his head together for the important US Open series could be really beneficial for him.

I cant believe Roddick lost that match. When Roddick was up 2 sets and up 4-2 i literally thought the match was over. I feel Roddick needs to hit his forehand flatter. He hits with too much top spin and thats the reason why many of his forehands land near the service lines.

His forehand is gone so now all he has is a serve which makes him very vournerable to players that can return and engage in a rally. As for that gasquet match that was jsut a tactical nightmare. He hit way too many shots to his backhand.

The stats show that he is not much better than Karlovic at returning. He's a consistent player without the speed. His forehand is only huge when he has time to set it up.

The Connors approach isn't working on the return. He just doesn't have that kind of talent to be able to take the return early and be offensive with it. Maybe he needs to step back a bit and get a good crack at it. Or just chip it back so that he has time to get into position.
