Will Andy Murray leave Under Armour? Who will he sign with?

Well, Andy has played his last match with Under Armour — at least under his original contract. Since Under Armour has been getting out of the sport it seems unlikely that they’d make a play to re-sign him.

Wondering if Fred Perry will make a play on him as they did in 2014 or maybe if a British designer company like Ted Baker, who previously signed James Ward, would take a chance on signing him?

If not, with his value not being particularly high at the moment I could see Adidas adding him back into the fold.

Murray going back to Adidas would be the ideal move. Much more marketable than Zverev

Too many injuries... probably end of his career... not sure who will pay what he wants.
I don’t think Adidas will.....unless he accepts less than $3 mils per a year.

Obviously he's not worth as much as he used to, but I think the other Big 4 members having made succesful comebacks would actually increase Murray's relevance as well. Especially considering young players are as useless as ever.

Can't see Muzz in anything Adidas have churned out lately. But the Hibs inspired RG 2017 kit would have worked for him. Also haven't they stopped producing the Barricade he liked?

What are the chances of Fred Perry? Kind of like the idea of that.

Or does UA renew for less $$ and less time? They've been utterly clueless on what to do with him market wise though. Can't buy his kit for the most part, can't buy certain things in the UK, etc etc.

Any rumours circulating?

See at this point I am not sure where he goes not, likely a detached footwear and apparel deal. Dont see him going to Nike, or back to Adidas though that makes sense.

Based on his previous accomplishments alone he’s going to remain marketable in Great Britain. But globally he’s probably at the least marketable point of his career at least since he originally signed with Fred Perry. That’s why I think a British designer company like Ted Baker or a return to Fred Perry makes the most sense.

As Brinke said all reports are that Under Armour is done with the sport. They even stopped putting his logo on his shirts around the US Open which would say to me it’s pretty official.

There aren’t any rumors that I have heard outside of people kicking around ideas of what company would fit and which wouldn’t. It’s still pretty early, I wouldn’t expect any well sourced rumors until late next month. You would think Fred Perry would make a play for Andy but who knows, last I checked it had been some time since Fred Perry even produced a tennis line to the general public. It appears Tennis Warehouse doesn’t even have them listed anymore which makes me think they have no future plans to do so which is unfortunate because I always found the Fred Perry line to be second to none in regard to style and quality.

The shoe question is an interesting one. If he were to sign with a company like Adidas, New Balance, or Asics that would assuredly want him wearing their shoes even if they had to do what Under Armour did and reverse engineer the old Barricades which obviously wouldn’t be a problem for Adidas. But if he were to sign with a company that doesn’t manufacture tennis shoes, like Federer-Djokovic but not having their marketability, I wonder if he’d just continue to pay Under Armour to manufacture his current shoes.

He's better off going with a no-name company and using himself as a marketing stand for their clothing.

Good! I after I found out about UA involvement in trophy hunting, I started to hate the brand. Good thing I don't own any of their products.

UA are completely neglecting their tennis line, they aren't coordinating colours, just slapping stuff together randomly. Their threadbone or whatever stuff looks awesome, why not get tennis players to wear it?

That was really the story of Andy’s entire tenure with the company. I wrote this in a previous thread,

“I don’t have a lot of good things to say about Under Armour’s foray into the sport of tennis. You’ll have trouble remembering another major company failing to capitalize on their sponsorship the way Under Armour has with Andy Murray. When he first joined the line they didn’t have his personalized line ready so they threw him in generic mix matched kits that looked downright silly. It took them forever to reverse engineer the Barricade 8’s forcing Andy to continue to play in Adidas free of charge. Smartly Adidas took to social media poking fun at Under Armour for their star tennis player continuing to play in Adidas gear. They’ve released few of Murray’s shirts and when they have it’s been without advertisement so you just have to go to their poorly designed website and search through it. They’ve released none of his shorts which is a true shame as I own a couple pairs of his personalized UA shorts and they’re fantastic. The tennis shorts I have bought off their website have been some of the worst I’ve bought from any brand that makes Tennis gear.”

They ended as they started, acting as though they didn’t care. I will say this, everyone talks as though all of Andy’s outfits have been plain boring black and white kits since joining Under Armour. For the most part they’re right but they did produce some really nice kits along the way.. off the top of my head Queens 2017 and 2018 were the finest of the bunch but Madrid 2015, Washington 2015, Indian Wells 2017, etc.. were all beautiful kits. of course the large majority of them were never made available to the public.

Not sure what I'm hoping for him. Don't really know Fred Perry, Adidas has been godawful lately.

Mizuno would be an interesting choice. He might actually win a GS and that exposure would be amazing for the Japanese brand.

How about Mizuno? It sounds like Mizuno is making a push into tennis apparels/shoes again based on Mizuno rep's posts in the other subforum.

That’s an interesting suggestion. They’ve certainly gone out and signed quite a few players over the last sixteen months or so. I do wonder what their budget would be for someone like Murray... I think we all agree that Murray has lost some of his global marketability but he’s still going to command a lot more money than anyone in Mizuno’s tennis stable.

A couple of other interesting names would be Serio Tacchini and Ellesse.

His UA deal was 14 million pounds in 4 years or something like that, right? That was in 2014, after his worst year in a long time

Rough guess his market value is still like 50% of that? Obviously his early 2019 will speak volumes, but if he gets back to something rather trivial results wise as top 20 and British #1 (lol) he'd be worth it.

Multiple Slam champs and former #1s are an incredible scarcity these days

I’m not sure of specifics but if memory serves me right those numbers sound correct. Brinke could probably confirm. If those numbers are correct I’d assume he’d be in the 2 million a year range.

Have any of you worn the UA stuff? Because I live in Florida and it’s amazingly cool. It works. And the coral shorts and really cool polo like shirt look great. But back to the regularly scheduled bashing

Nah. He loves playing too much. Even if he’s not a top ten player as long as he’s playing pain free he will continue.
Yeah, but he's 31 and not even in the top 200 anymore. He isn't a Federer or Hewitt who never stops playing. If he fails to come back in a year, he will probably be out.

I bet it feels great supporting a brand that sponsors killing animals for fun.

LOL do you know how many conglomerates support both sides? You buy stuff from places that treat human beings like garbage but as long as someone doesnt kill an animal you are happy in your little bubble. Of course you know for sure that meat from these animals is trashed and just the heads and furs kept right? I just love hypocrites.

Very respectfully I'd like to mention that you don't know anything about me and what I know. Other than that, all is good.

I could certainly see him reevaluating at the end of next season if his form doesn’t return or if he were to re-injure himself. I’ve also read the obituaries of Murray, Djokovic, Nadal and Federer too many times to forecast when it’ll be officially over.

Under Armour is a joke. It didn’t make any sense 4 years ago and it makes even less sense now as a tennis brand. It was always geared toward American football, basketball and the UFC crowd. Good riddance.

Andy’s appeal is still massive globally. I can’t see Adidas, Nike, Lacoste not backing up a dump truck load of money for his endorsement.

I don’t know. I get the idea that a company should stick to what they’re good at. But the opportunity was certainly there for Under Armour to become a legitimate presence in the sport had they been committed to doing so rather than coming off as completely inept.

Had Under Armour simply marketed Murray the way Fred Perry did in 2009 or Adidas in 2013 and brought in a couple of other top 30-40 men in the sport and been committed to marketing them I think the story would be a lot different.

I just never saw them getting behind tennis. Even in 2016 when Andy’s stock was never higher the US Under Armour website still had categories for Outdoor Sports and Tough Mudder but no tennis section.

Nike, Lacoste, Asics, etc won't back up the truck. If anything, it'll be incentive-based. Too injury prone at this point to invest huge bucks up front. Too risky a ROI.

Really? You don’t think a company like Fred Perry would offer Murray a 3 year 6 million dollar contract?

Only a little company like Mizuno or Athletic DNA would sponsor Murray at this point. He's pretty much done.
