Will the Laver Cup match the Ryder Cup?

The hope is that is becomes a similar calibre event that everyone takes seriously. Will this happen or will it go the other way and become a glorified exhibition event?

I hope the world team develop better players in future so it will be more competitive. Tennis is quite different to golf in that the lower ranked player is less likely to win (in Golf the world no. 100 can win any week, including the Ryder cup.) This is one thing the Laver Cup needs.

Also hope Berdych does not make team Europe again, he's so boring!

I don't really know how this can be sustained year after year. It worked because we had #1, #2, #4, #5, #7 in the world. I think that was primarily due to the influence of Roger Federer, who both organized it AND played in it and got Nadal to go along.

So what's gonna keep that caliber of players coming back? The Masters and Slams get all the top players due to the ranking system and the prize money. Davis Cup sometimes but not always gets top players because of pride of playing for one's country, and for it's history.

What's gonna keep the Laver Cup getting that caliber of players year after year? There's not enough money in the world to pay enough in appearance fees to get most of the top 10 to show up at one event all the time. No ranking points means that whenever there's a close race for YE#1 or for making the WTF, this would be a thing players might cut or blow off. I think the two groups - "World" and "Europe" are both too broad for there to be any meaningful "pride of playing for one's area". Maybe if it's been going for a decade then it'll have some history and can get top players to join and take it seriously based on the history and prestige, but those aren't there yet.

Does Federer have strong enough personal connections to keep getting lots of top players to come even after he's no longer one of them?

The prize money given to winner should be a enough. Top tennis players shouldn’t be asking for appearance fees for this particular event. This is the Laver Cup. It honors the great Rod Laver and the driving force for the event is one the greatest players to play the game of tennis. Tennis players need to show more respect for the history of the game and the people who paved the way for them.

So how does playing in this event show more respect than playing in the St. Petersburg Open, going on at the same time.

This event has less history than any of the other events going on at the same time. Maybe when it's been around for a while "history" will be a good reason to play it, but how does it bridge that gap?

Ryder Cup is every 2 years, I think if this goes forward tennis should go the same route.

It will if the two teams sail yachts instead. Call it the America's Cup.

Well Federer certainly made a smart move by inviting so many younger players most likely to dominate the tour when the "Big 3" (plus Murray and Stan) are no longer around. Zverev, Shapalov, Sock, Thiem, Kyrigos, Tiafoe.... these are the guys most likely to be challenging for majors when the older (30+) generation finally calls it a day. Federer is already working to instill some loyalty to the Laver Cup cause in them.

They already announced Laver Cup is next year in Chicago which I think is a good idea, although I probably would have preferred Atlanta.

I think what what'll happen is, Fed will play the next few Laver Cups so he can explore more cities and travel, then it'll switch to an every other year format like Ryder Cup when he retires.

I think to be fair the event benefitted as a contest from the absence of Djokovic, Murray and Wawrinka. Put these 3 in for Berdych, Cilic and Thiem and it would be pretty one sided even allowing for Nishikori for Tiafoe on the other side.
I tend to agree that playing the event every 2 years would be better but I don't think anybody could doubt that this meant a lot to the players so I see no reason why that should be different next time around.
I'm not sure whether Borg offered much as team captain. He basically just stood watching most of the time, unlike McEnroe who gave the job everything he had. I think Lendl would be a better choice, or possibly Becker.

Please, the Laver Cup is played in a slow spot in the ATP calendar. So please name these so-called other tennis tournaments worth watching.
Calm your knickers Sally, the intended target was golf. Tennis was just the vehicle used.

Golf is almost as dull as cricket. The Ryder cup is important to golf, because it's a team event spanning continents, lives ruined, blood shed, etc.

Now tennis isn't always painfully dull. It is sometimes duly painful, but I digress. Or do I?

They say when you have to explain* a joke, the joke isn't funny. But I think sometimes, maybe a joke is too sophisticated for its audience.. Or Maybe the joker is too crazy for its coconuts.

I retort, you deride

* loosely, I grant you
