Will Tomic need to go through qualies to get into AO?

He's currently ranked 144. Will he get direct entry? If not, will he have to go through qualies?

Do you think Australia will give him a wildcard? Could he get a sponsors exemption?

You guys think they'll use a WC on Tomic and not a young player? Groth maybe because he said this is his last one and he's retiring

They'd better not give him a WC. They probably will though, because he's one of our local "favourites".

And then he'll thank them by giving up and tanking in the first or second round as soon as it gets a bit too hot or tough, showing all that Aussie fighting spirit.

He "feels top 5", so I hope he gets Federer first round. Roger could use the bye anyway.

Wish we had a top guy like Rafter around now.

I thought Tomic and Kyrgios were the pinnacle of Australian Sport.

Ofc Tomic will get a wildcard! Wimbledon did the same for Alex Bogdanovic for eight years so we can't complain!

Even Bernie managed to win the odd match at the AO though. Alex B never managed to get past the 1st round of Wimby no matter how many wildcards were thrown at him!

TBH neither Groth nor Tomic should receive a wildcard. In Groth's case I could understand a Wildcard victory lap if he were like LLeyton Hewitt and had been a finalist and could still go deep later in the tourney at an old age but Groth would lose first round, and has never played well at AO imo. He deserves recognition for a brave career and possibly a feature as part of the celebrations of the tournament but not a free spot in the singles draw.

Give those wildcards to some of the brilliant young Australian players who are working their guts out here in Europe trying to start their careers like Alex De Minaur and others.

Sam Groth, Tomic , Kokkinakis all will get WC.

They should do away with the practice of WC for majors

WC isn't a bad system but they're often distributed incorrectly. Wimbledon gave James Ward a Wildcard this year, he's a 30 year old challenger level player and hadn't played in the last 12 months. There's too much home bias.

Boggo is another symbol of where home bias is BS.

Agree wholeheartedly. I shudder every time I see the effort they're making and the money they're playing for in challengers, but I think we both know what's going to happen...

To what do you ascribe it? Do you pin the blame on a specific someone/something in Australia?
The rise of other sports. The embrace of "working class culture" in Australia has driven people away from tennis, which is considered a posh and effeminate sport by many here. Basically, if a kid in, say, Western Sydney wanted to play tennis, his friends could well make fun of him. Only rugby league or cricket will do now.

There is also too many forms of cricket these days. And too many leagues and teams of football and rugby. They soak up all the athletes.

I agree WC isn't a bad system. It should be to encourage players who have had a huge rise in ranking not making the cut off or players coming back from injury

I don't like the way home tournaments dole it out to players who really don't deserve it .

Tennis has been class-biased toward private school education in Australia, but it was alleviated by community club-structures that were more inclusive.

The club structures have dwindled as clubs were outsourced to private management and coaching services, but private schools are still strong.

These private service providers have been contracted into state schools as well, but modest fees are required as they are at clubs, but it all adds up.

The barriers to entry into a team sport are just far lower and for most young people the more social context of the sport is more appealing as well.

The more popular sports, like Australian-rules football, have more money to throw into community-engagement programs whereas tennis can't compete.

To what do you ascribe it? Do you pin the blame on a specific someone/something in Australia?

D) all of the above,

Plus the relentless rise of soccer at a junior level and not much positive elite tennis news for over 15 years... Also our media is relentlessly negative about tennis except the TV channel that covers the AO.

Yeah, dilution of athletic talent in US.

That is interesting about the effeminate tag. Given what we know about the effects of concussion these days, I'm surprised that there would be such a stigma.

No chance he's getting a wildcard. Australians despise Tomic, would be a very dumb move.

They'll leave him to play qualifying (unless he manages to win this challenger tournament this week and go deep in the next one in which case he'll probably get direct entry).

Ebden did well to win a challenger title and make direct entry so he won't need a wildcard. It'll be Groth for sure. I think Millman and Kokkinakis still have their Protected Ranking to use? So that could open the door for De Minaur and Santillan. And of course one wildcard goes to the winner of the playoff challenge, Tomic could always play that one.

100% no doubt will get an automatic wild card entry. Aussie at Aussie open with actually one of the best most consistent records there in the entire ATP outside the top 5 or so.
2012 4R, 2013 3R, 2015 4R, 2016 4R, 2017 3R.
Also won Sydney Open 250 lead up tournament in 2013 vs Kevin Anderson and runner up 2014 to Del Po.
So record in Aus is worthy of wild card for sure.
Go Burnie.

No chance, he is universally hated here. Kyrgios has some small group of fans still whilst Tomic has burned all his bridges, including with Tennis Australia.

Tomic can always play the wildcard playoff challenge, in theory he should be able to smoke any of the Aussies in the draw. Otherwise, he can win some challengers to finish the year and just squeeze in like Ebden did.

Tomic is a shame to the "Aussie spirit". Sorry to put it that way but I'm a sports fan more than a tennis fan and I follow like at least a 30 good sports regularly and can easily say and the world even know that Aussies are known for grit, fighting and not giving up easily in any sport.

This guy is an utter shame to that name. If I was AO organisers, I'd even give it for Hewitt or groth, because people want to see champions, present or past. Not wannabes and losers.

Yep, he doesn't deserve to play under our good name, let alone get a WC into Melbourne.

Well, it looks like they have made the right choice as far as their social positioning is concerned.

Tomic doesn't deserve that pay cheque.. For years together he has been tanking or retiring in first or second round. He should be banned for a while. Does he think spectators who buy tickets , people who watch him on TV, organizers are fools ??? Enough is enough

Can't agree more. Even in soccer( though there are not as good as European and SA teams) they put up a brave fight. Their determination and sometimes domination in cricket, Hockey is amazing. This tomic fellow would get the "worst ever Australian sportsperson award" if there is one.

I hope if they don't give Tomic a wildcard they don't give one to Groth instead

Tomic is 10 times the player Groth ever was. Groth only spent 2 years in the top 100 and never cracked the top 50. Tomic is still ranked higher than him even now and Tomic is at least trying to pick up points while Groth isn't bothering

Groth has only won 3 singles matches total at the Aus open and has struggled to get into the main draw there without help for his entire career. Would be a bit ridiculous giving him a wildcard imo
