I like his game and I used to be his fan (I think I still kinda am) but this is exactly what he deserves. I try to understand everything he went through with his father while growing up, his mixed feelings towards the sport and so on, but he wasted so many opportunities, let so many people down and disrespected the sport, players, and fans in so many ways it's impossible to argue against TA in this, especially when there are some good Australian players with better behaviors who deserve the chance to compete. I wished he could use this as a fuel to try to come back stronger and prove everyone wrong but, sadly, I can't see it happening. He hasn't shown any will to try and improve the situation he's in, and I don't see him doing it after this. So yeah... this could pretty much be the end of his career.

His team have confirmed that he will not be playing qualifying and therefore is out of the Australian Open. Looks like his career is finished. Can't see him fighting his way back up through challengers and qualifying if he can't even do slam qualies.

I expect a retirement by years end.

The Wimbledon quarter-finalist rejected Davis Cup captain — and former ally — Lleyton Hewitt’s offer to join a training camp in Melbourne in December.

He also knocked back the chance to play the Australian Open wildcard playoffs, a decision which shocked Hewitt and fellow senior TA performance figures Wally Masur and Jason Stoltenberg.

The Herald Sun understands Tomic would have been considered strongly for a discretionary wildcard into the Open had he turned up at the training camp and contested the playoff.

That door has now been slammed shut.

“We made the offer — Lleyton did — we said ‘We’d just like you to play the Australian Open wildcard playoff and if you just make yourself available, you give yourself a good chance to get in’,” Craig Tiley said.

“Now to get into the Australian Open, he’s not going to be getting a wildcard.

“He’d have to go into qualifying so that’s a decision for him.

“I would hope that Bernie would want to play (qualifying), but he’s indicated that that’s likely not the case.

“We all know Bernie can play the game, he’s had some great wins here. He’s one of Australia’s top players and we’d love to see him competing and playing.

He should apply for a job at a wine factory, play poker in the evening and enjoy life. As long as he enjoys it that way, he should stay likewise and benefit both himself and the world.

This is the correct decision, I have never really been a fan of Tomic but you can't understand anything he went through if you're not him, or close to him, so reserve judgement for people who have actually wronged you. Personally I don't understand why people care so much, he's just a tennis athlete who didn't reach his potential, what has he done that's so bad?

Good decision. I am sure there are many other dedicated young players who deserve it over him. Besides, Tomic has already bragged about his wealth, no reason to give him a free check. Let somebody else use that money.

When people care too much about others' life that usually means that they don't care about their own that much.

Well, You and I aren't young enough to be influenced by what he does. But, there are kids coming up that certainly don't need his kind for a role model.

I don't hate Bernie. It just seems like such a waste of a gift. For me its more about what he represents far more than him as a person.

They’re comments are off-base. Tomic’s behavior hurts the game, he’s an unnecessary distraction with no work ethic or professionalism. His type sends the wrong message. If you care about the game of tennis, this type of behavior shouldn’t be tolerated.

Right, but how is he different from any other tennis player who never reached their potential? Being in the spotlight doesn't mean you're automatically going to be a good hard-working person who does everything right. He is not responsible for the lives of anyone but himself, he didn't alter the course of anyone's life by not having a better tennis career. There's plenty of role models for kids to choose but Tomic isn't one of those unless he redeems himself later in life. You can feel sorry for him but anything beyond that like being angry at him for being exactly who he is, is nonsensical.

I would hope that he takes this as motivation to prove everyone wrong and have the last laugh, but somehow I doubt anything will change.

When he steps on a tennis court is hurting more than himself. Not living up to potential is one thing, but being a cancer upon the game is another thing. The only reason he hasn’t quit because there are no other avenues in life where you can act a fool and make money.

Wouldn't it be hilarious, if Tomic played everywhere else but at the australian tournaments and the AO?

That would see us return to the glorious times when AO was skipped by some of the best players in the world.

Being an australian and the GOAT that he is he will set a trend that will see the world of tennis re-live the glorious past of the sport.

Brrr, it gives me such retro vibes!

He's in a very bad way with his mental health. This is a good thing. He needs to stop playing tennis for a while. Forget all the talk about spoiled brat.... he will be back with money.... bla bla.... It's time for him to sort his life out and he can't do it whilst playing professional tennis.

It might be retirement by the start of the year....not contesting the AO when he's not injured is effectively a retirement, or at least a sabbatical. There's some chance of a year off to recapture love of the sport/competing if he feels any of that. Otherwise this appears to be effectively a retirement.

Yup. Australia is one of the few places he performs well. He's abysmal on clay so you can write off the entire clay season for a comeback (unless he does what Pospisil did and play hard court Challengers during clay season). But if he can't even bother to play slam qualifying which pays pretty decent and offers good points then I can't see him doing challengers. I read that he's been offered $1 million to go on Australia's I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here. So that'll be interesting if he takes that.

I seriously doubt an Australian TV show has $1million for Bernard...I don't think there's that much money flying around.

I'm a Celebrity has big bucks to offer for a large celebrity and Tomic is notoriously hated here in Australia and that show makes them do awful things like eat bugs and do things they're terrified of. I'd tune in if it meant watching him chat about his career and do stuff that makes him uncomfortable (and I hate that show).

That is shocking about not wanting to play qualifying. Did the team give a reason for it? It could be that he is taking some time out, and in future he may still be willing to go to Challenger / Qualifying path? It's concerning either way, but for different reasons.

I'll be going to some of the qualifying days. Would have been interesting to see him down there at court level to try and glean what is going on in matches.

No idea to be honest. Honestly why i'm thinking this I'm a Celeb thing could be legit. He had every indication towards the end of 2017 that he was fine with slam qualies and challengers, he played one towards the end of the year. Why is he suddenly not interested? Slam qualifying pays well too which is something he cares about. Doesn't add up. I won't be shocked if he ends up on this reality show after all.

Uh, yet another twist.

Tomic set to play Kooyong and apparently WILL sign on for the Australian Open qualifying.

THE intrigue around Bernard Tomic’s future has taken another twist with the Queenslander agreeing to play the Priceline Classic at Kooyong next week, while doubts remain over his Australian Open qualifying intentions.

Kooyong tournament director Peter Johnston said Tomic would use a late afternoon pipe-opener on Tuesday as preparation for Australian Open qualifying, which starts the following day.

This is despite the former world No 17 indicating to Tennis Australia he would likely bypass qualifying and rumours he is set to be paid $1 million to appear on Channel 10s I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here.

Overlooked for a main draw singles wildcard, Tomic would need to sign-on for qualifying on Tuesday.

Johnston said the Queenslander had committed to the Kooyong event, which features Novak Djokovic, David Goffin, Dominic Thiem, Marin Cilic and Kevin Anderson.

“Bernie is definitely playing a match, late afternoon on Tuesday,” Johnston said.

“We’re not sure yet who he’ll play but, with Australian Open qualifying starting the following day, we’ll look at a match with a shortened format for him.

It's an interesting thought. How many of the top players would need to skip a grand slam for it to financially cripple the tournament. Sponsors would pull out if notice was given far enough in advance and they wouldn't be able to charge nearly as much for tickets.
