Wimbledon’s ridiculous roof policy

Butt hurt Nadal fans have been preaching this on other message boards.

Also ironic that a VB advocate is telling me to "use my brain". :D

Keep those insults coming. I know you're annoyed your man didn't convert his set points.

I’m a Nadal fan as well but It’s not about Nadal. I already said 2 days ago that Rafa will not beat djokovic but that If Isner makes the final he will beat Novak.

It’s this rule that is IMO questionable. o_O

Whatever your opinion, the rule won't change and they will resume under the roof. Rafa still has a great chance to come back and win this in 5, so I'd save the complaints about this rule for until he actually loses.

I know it will not change. Doesn’t mean we cannot discuss it with an open mind though.

On the match: I don’t think Rafa will come back. Novak will play even more freely tomorrow while Rafa will be nervous as hell.

Agree that Djokovic will come out during due to the extra rest. I also think he’ll see that going to Nadal’s forehand on a weak ball was killing him and focus on pummeling the backhand more, like he did later in the tiebreak

I’d be surprised to goes to a 5th. Who knows though, Rafa surprised me today when he won that 2nd set.

The fact that we have hard court events with a higher Court Pace Index than Wimbledon's centre court says it all.

It's the bounce that is the main issue. A mythical creature like Isner would never reach SF on old-school grass to gives us a 50 games fifth set.

I don't know...he's a Masters winner this year and his serve is deadly on a quick surface...I would think.

He's a masters winner at Miami, one of the slowest and highest bouncing court around. Even with all the improvements in his game if the ball stayed low I don't see him being few games away from a Wimbledon final.

The bounce is probably a function of the weather rather than court preparation.

I agree which is why I said the roof was the good equalizer.

Isner has a quick but more-importantly a very spin-based serve (his kicker is among the very best in the business). That's why he can hold his own on a slower hard court (and even clay) but has historically never really done well at Wimbledon until this year, where the conditions are hotter and the balls are bouncing higher than ever.

They changed the grass in 2001 so Isner never played on the low faster grass of an earlier era. Would be interesting to see if the lower bounce was offset by the faster speed.

There were no giraffes and 6+ hour grass matches during the 90s Wimbledon (even when the matches went the distance like the 1998 Goran-Krajicek SF). Low bounce is a killer for such tall guys.

Yes, but were there any giraffes on the tour? I can't think of any such tall players from that era playing anywhere.

Yep, there's a reason Isner's performance at the FO was better than Wimbledon up until this year. The kick he can get with that serve when the surface allows it is ridiculous and mainly the function of his abnormal height for a tennis pro.

Remember how Rafter claimed he was better on HC than grass/Wimbledon because his kick serve was more effective?

Fair point, I can't either. However as I said, I think even lower bounce than today would simply not allow them to contend at Wimbledon. Before abnormally hot weather this year, Isner never got past the 3d round at WImbledon. Of course he also improved his game but not sure he did it to such a degree (I mean he reached masters finals before, he just wasn't facing mighty Zverev in them).

It will resume Saturday at 1 p.m. local time (8 a.m. ET), ahead of the women's final between Serena Williams and Angelique Kerber. That final will not start before 2 p.m. local time (9 a.m. ET).The Djokovic-Nadal match will resume with the roof closed, a decision that was left to the players to agree upon. The All England Club confirmed that decision had been made late Friday. The women's final, however, will take place with the roof open unless weather intervenes and requires it to be closed. No rain is forecast for the area on Saturday.

So they’ll close the roof for this semi, but open it for women’s final right after. What an absolutely ret*rded rule. GTFO

Agree. I don't think Rafa will win. Novak will be playing free and big. Rafa is always nervous until he gets a break or a set lead. If he gets broke fast its game set match. Hope I'm wrong.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't understand why it's soooo awful that Rafa doesn't get to play on an open court. Three sets are done. Only two more to go. We're talking only two sets left, so being in the sun and worrying about stamina and fitness really doesn't matter at all. Well, unless the 5th set goes to 70-68....

Ball doesn't bounce as high in the cool conditions with the roof closed so it negates his massive top spin to a degree. Also he handles heat better than djoker. And it's an outdoor tournament so play it outdoors.

At 8 am tomorrow in London it will be 65 degrees. With the roof closed, I doubt it would be any lower

You can’t blame a roof for a loss. PETE would never do that. Grasping at straws like a MUGfan

Rules are rules. Life’s not out to get your favorite player.

I’m literally having a salt bath right now :D

This will be really weird conditions for Nadal. He has played mid day when the players and sun have dried the court as much as possible. Should be fairly moist, fast and low bounce. Footing will be worse as well...

76 and low humidity still isn’t much different. It’s not like it’s going to be mid 90s

I liked the world better without social media. Now, every m*ron is lead to believe that airing their opinion actually matters.
