Worried about Federer

Anybody noticed that there's something different about Federer this year? I'm a huge RF fan, I personally think he's the GOAT, but my gut feeling tells me that 2013 might be the last if things keep going like this for him. He hasn't served well at all since the beginning of the year and he seems to have lost a bit of pace on his groundstrokes. I thought he looked a bit helpless against Murray. Mediocre against Benneteau. I knew Berdych would trouble him today, but I still expected a better performance.

Obviously Federer is 31, going on 32 in August. I'm glad that he's still here, but if he doesn't bounce back from this, how can he honestly expect to be a threat at the Slams?

He lost in 3 sets to a power hitter in his physical prime..

Give him a break, it's all about the slams for him. He probably could care less about losing in the semis of Dubai to Berdych.

Relax, there is nothing to worry about, worse scenario : He loses all his matches, just sit back and enjoy what is left.

he took murray to 5 sets

he had 3 MP's against the bird.

he won a grand slam less than 8 mo. ago

he made the finals of the WTF

What do you expect?

Any slam after the 2010 season was going to be pure gravy.

i've got news for you... he's not going to win the FO

he has a 20-25% chance to win either Wimbledon or the USO.. if he does, it's freaking unreal... if he doesn't it's ok.

Post this type of thread after he has his "rosol" moment

I think 2014 is probably going to be Federer's last year on the ATP Tour I do not believe he's going to last until 2016. Federer is a champion and I doubt a champion like Roger Federer is going to be happy losing in the semifinals or quarterfinals of slams and ATP events. Roger has a family his kids are growing up and he wants to spend more time with them. Also, Roger has slowed down due to age and his results are going to get worse. Also, Federer is going to continue his decline it is going to happen. I think Federer might have 1 more slam in him but that's it.

Agree the serve has been off all year.
He'll never get a decent amount of confidence if he doesn't fix that.

Remember Fed's planning on taking a long break after IW to work on his game. Let's see how things go after that, and whether he'll be able to fix some of the obvious problems somewhat.

Berdych owns him.

And today's game is about tall people who can hit hard.
The game has been about tall people who can hit hard since the 90's apparently.

Yet Sampras owned everyone and he was 6 ft 1. Fed/Nadal owned everyone and they were 6 ft 1. Djokovic is owning everyone and he's 6 ft 2.

Nothing to do with size and everything to do with Berdych being a good enough player to take advantage of a declined old Federer.

Pete Sampras is the past this is the present the big men give Federer a lot of problems guys like Del Potro, Berdych, Tsonga have the power to blast Federer off the court. Berdych seems to love playing Federer he knows he can overpower him and there is nothing Federer can do about it.

QFT. Older Federer still have good chance to win slam despite he's not at his best anymore.

Djokovic is an inch bigger than Federer an owns all those guys. Hell, Ferrer is smaller than Federer and owns all those guys as well.

Again, nothing to do with size and everything to do with Federer's decline; he can be overpowered by them because his footspeed has declined and his pace of shots has gone way down.

You're such a clown it's ridiculous, after that one win at the Olympics he lost to Federer 8 times in a row:

It's time to face reality. Federer is not going to suddenly turn on the afterburners and dominate the field again. I think at some point in the winter he's decided that all he wants to do for the next 2-3 years is focus on the Slams and use the other tournaments and more practice to keep him sharp enough to advance deep into the Slams. As long as he makes it to the SFs of Slams more often than not, he's going to stay motivated, because the reality is once you make it that far, you're going to have a shot for the title. I think this is a great plan for Roger, with one problem. He needs to keep up his ranking points so that he stays in the top 4. It's sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy - if he does well at the tournaments he keeps his ranking and his tournament seedings which helps him avoid his major rivals until the QFs, SFs and Fs. If he doesn't, things will just keep getting tougher for him. The reality is that it's not a question of IF he will eventually fall out of the top 4, it's WHEN.

Seriously whats wrong with you people? Is he expected to win everything out there??

Whats so difficult to figure out.......Fed has always had problems against people who will out hit him....in fact most people do..........Tsonga, Berdych, Del boy pre wrist injury.........

Rosol against nadal.......

Life goes on......doesnt end on a ridiculously colored court in Dubai

Fed will just be annoyed because he had chances. Now Berdy has to step up & shoot Boss down! That will be tough.

Not for me. but if he had match points he probably should've converted.

But it's whatever. as long as he's still out there playing.

I know he's focusing on slams, but I still don't get the feeling he can go beyond the semi anymore? When he won those smaller tournaments last year, it helped him gain more confidence heading into slams. The main issue I see with Federer this year is the poor 1st serve percentage. We all know that when Federer is serving well, he's usually on fire (ie vs Djokovic at Cincinnati last year). He hasn't exactly got the highest BP conversion rate in the last 3 years, so if he can't defend his serve well enough, where does that leave him? I know Berdych has always been troublesome for Federer, but still I would of love to see Federer make the final.

Yes. Some people expect him to win every match he plays. And some people see the end after every loss.

We've been hearing about Federer's "decline" for how many years now?

Well, he obviously has declined though, just look at the guy out there; still if he can just raise his game at the right moments he can win big titles but it's tough.

Fed is in decline because he's not posting multiple slam years since 2009. That's 3 consecutive years with 1,0,1 slams. That's a clear decline 3,2,3,3,1,2.

Federer is probably the only guy I'd give over 20% chance of beating Djokovic in the majors this year, although his level isn't exactly sky high, he is still in the mix and can get hot out of nothing. I think it's amazing that he's only just losing against the current generation instead of getting blow away. Wimbledon is his best shot at winning a slam this year. The good thing for him is that he can beat anyone when he's on, so the level required is still there.

But this is exactly the problem. Getting there to the end but not getting the job done.

Getting to semi-finals and finals all the time is a respectable achievement for any player. The thing is, Roger is not any player and anything but getting the trophy won't be satisfying for him at this point.

I don't think he is the type of person who thinks that he has achieved so much that anything from now on is just a bonus despite him repeating that over and over. I don't believe it. And even if he does think that, then his actual situation is what he deserves.

The only thing that could matter for a player of his caliber is winning. Beating everyone.
And it's not happening, so eventually it will affect him at some point, if he doesn't get fired up again.

Federer used to be so good at using his opponents pace and just blasting winners back. The US Open final against Ferrero and Agassi he was hitting winners like they were nothing. He hit flatter back then too. Now he whips his racket way more and puts more spin on the ball. This slows his stroke reaction time to a hard shot and he has cost him a lot of pace on his groundies. His approach shots also sit up a lot more. He’s still better than most anybody by far but Prime Fed would in no way have issues with guys like Berdych, Tsonga or Delpo

If my math is right Fed is 6-7 against top ten players since Wimbledon

Beat Tsonga at AO 13
Beat Murray at WTF
Beat Ferrer at WTF
Beat Tipsarevic at WTF
Beat Delpo at Olympics
Beat Djoker at Cincy

Lost to Berdych at Dubai
Lost to Murray at AO
Lost to Djokovic at WTF
Lost to Delpo at WTF
Lost to Delpo at Basel
Lost to Murray at Olympics
Lost to Berdych at USO

Not too impressive looking forward. Wimb 2012 may have been his last hurrah.

I think 2013 will be the end of Fed's slam quarter final streak. Keep your eye on him this Wimbledon.

Berdych does own Federer now. There's no doubt about it. Federer has to play a perfect match in order to beat Berdych, and even then, it's not entirely on his racket.

He played in vintage form in Paris 2011 to beat him, and Berdych still gave him a tough match.

As I have previously stated, I think Federer will not win another slam again. Infact, he may win on the grass in Germany, but he probably won't win another tournament this year.

He is overweight and lost his mojo. I think for the first time he is struggling for motivation. I suspect his mind is on Wimbledon and Wimbledon only.

I think Roger has readjusted his goals.

I think he's not gunning for #1 and I think he's realistic about his odds of winning more than one slam in any year.

I think the guy enjoys tennis (you would too if you were amongst the top 2-5 people in teh world in your profession) and he makes a ton of money doing it.

I think he achieved the last of his major goals with that wimbledon in 2012... do i think he's going to give it his all this season? Yes. Do I think he's going to win a major? probably not.

I think he's going to need a disappointing season (like 2011 was for him) to re-ignite the fire... but it's one thing to reignite when you're 29/30.. another entirely when you are 32.

If #18 never comes, so be it... but as long as he has a 25% chance in each of the next 7 slams he enters, then I welcome him playing.

Federer is 31. People just love overstating his age to make excuses for his losses. Everyone knows Federer is not in his prime, but it has gotten to the point that some posters seek affirmation from others about Federer's greatness whether he wins or loses. It can't just be "Roger played great today" or "Roger had a bad day". It has to be "Federer won today. This proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is the G.O.A.T. He is 31/32/33 and still owning guys who are in their prime" or "Federer lost today, but he put up a huge fight and should be commended for keeping up with these young guns. Could you imagine if he was in his prime? Federer would have won 6-1 6-0."

Nothing to be worried about. We as Federer fans have to accept that he is going to lose more and more now that he is slowing down. There are still only a handful of players who are going to give him problems and because of that I don't see his QF streak ending this year. Hoping he can get another major this year also.

The reason for this are some ****s on this forum who think Federer would lose like this in his prime to Djokovic and Murray, people bring up the age a lot because it IS the real reason Federer is losing to these guys.
