Worst player to win a Slam

We always ask, "best player to never win a Slam" and undoubtedly some of those players are better overall than players who have won Slams.

Obviously, you have to be pretty good player to win a Slam, but there are Slam winners who are more average than others and who won't even get into the hall of fame.

Women - Iva Majoil, Myskina (I know, she's been injured and cer career is not over).

Men - numerous FO winners such as Gaudio, Albert Costa. Not saying they are bad, but certainly not the cream of the crop among tennis champions.

Federer obviously. I hear from the great minds on TTW that Federer only wins if he gets walkovers, lucky draws and help from rain delays. Also, I hear he has weaker competition than all other past slam winners.

Gaston Gaudio is pretty bad. Losing to Roddick on clay and getting 2 bagels from Federer in a tournament that Federer didn't even win?

I didn´t check all the Slam winners but maybe in the recent years it´s between Andres Gomez, Gaudio and Thomas Johansson but any Grand Slam winner is a great player and deserves full credit for that Slam.

Gaudio and Johansson seem to be more mocked for their slam titles then praised, which is unfortunate. Anyone who wins a slam won 7 matches, but some people cant stomach names that arent among the marquee winning one.

This was ToJo's draw to win AO '02

R128 Diaz, Jacobo (ESP)
R64 Hipfl, Markus (AUT)
R32 El Aynaoui, Younes (MAR)
R16 Voinea, Adrian (ROU)
Q Bjorkman, Jonas (SWE) (ranked 64)
S Novak, Jiri (CZE) (ranked 24)
W Safin, Marat (RUS) (ranked 11)

This was Gaudio's run at the French

R128 Cañas, Guillermo (ARG) (tough tough cookie)
R64 Novak, Jiri (CZE) (ranked 14)
R32 Enqvist, Thomas (SWE)
R16 Andreev, Igor (RUS) (tough cookie)
Q Hewitt, Lleyton (AUS) 12 (tough cookie)
S Nalbandian, David (ARG) 8 (damn tough cookie, this includes a bagel)
W Coria, Guillermo (ARG) 3 (double tough cookie)

Gaudio beat 4 Top15, and a guy like Cañas coming back from injury, and two top10s, including bageling Nalbandian (#8), and Envquist, and breadsticking Coria (#3). Average ranking of the competition: #36 (Andreev at #77 and Cañas at 72)

ToJo beat one top15, not even one in the Top10. Average ranking of the competition: #56.

I'll go with ToJo. He had the easiest path on getting his trophy.

assuming we don't count the AO in the late 70s/early 80s(when most top players gave it a pass)
or the '73 Wimbledon(boycott)
or 1968 AO(amateurs only)

its probably Gaudio. I think he's the only slam winner in the last 25 years that didn't reach at least another slam semi(& Gaudio never even reached another QF at a slam)
He's also never won a masters series, which at least Johansson & Costa did(& they both reached another slam semi)

Chris O'Neil, obviously. She won the 1978 Aussie Open while unseeded. Hadn't won a tournament before that, never won a tournament after that.

^are you kidding me? he's the best along with sampras!!

Seriously turn your sarcasm meters on. You guys are idiots. Obviously PAQ was making fun of all the people that say Federer doesn't deserve all the majors he has. I mean really, and then to come back with a fat hobo insult? So sad.

I don't seriously think there is no such thing as a "worst player to win a slam", they all had to play 7 matches and earned the title, no matter who they had to play.

I remember when Kuerten lost at 1st round when he tried to defend
his FO title, many people labled him as one slam wonder.

Roddick winning the US open obviously.

NOT obviously....he has won the US Open Series twice in a row. Has won Masters Series titles, and been to the finals at Wimbledon how many times? Reached the Semi's of the AO, etc....

Surely you joke when saying Roddick is the worst to win a slam....

Gaudio's road to victory was tough at least, Johanssen only had to beat a tired head case in the final to win the AO.

This is a serious improvement. This same topic used to be populated with people saying Andy Roddick is the worst to win a slam.

Coria was an bigger headcase in the French Open final, compared to Safin in the Australian Open final. It was an embarassing display of mental incompetence on that day. As for Safin being tired, Coria was cramping and physicaly troubled in the last 2 sets.

One slam at 19 years of age, three tier I titles beating the likes of Hingis, Pierce, Sabatini, Novotna. Majoli
was a fine player done in by injuries and too much partying.

Sharapova and Thomas Johansson. Those who say Roddick are wrong because after winning USO he made wimbledon final, semis, has 5 masters series titles, 24 atp titles and lot of good results in major tournaments.

Federer.....jk. Got to go with Johansson. And anyone who picked Roddick is obviously joking or high on illegal drugs.

This is an interesting one,

For men: virtually none in the 80's..Noah and Cash were class acts and Cash reached AO finals and had injuries...

90's : the obvious one here is Gomez vs Agassi at the French. Gomez gets my vote.

naughties: T-Jo, gaudio, ferrero and Costa mostly.

I wouldn't choose costa because he was a top clay-courter for years who was a contender... T-jo was a permanent member of the top 20 from his 99 win in montreal(MS) to his victory in Aussie. In 2001 he beat rafter impressively and was always getting consistent results...

Gaudio's victory over nalby is a real headscratcher , nalby had just come off beating kuerten!!

anyway..my answer is Gomez
:-D

Ferrero? You can't blame the guy for all of his problems in confidence after he had his success from 2000-2003. His winning the FO that year was in no way a surprise like Gaudio or ToJo. Moreover he's reached two other grand slam finals (including the USO that same year), won four MS titles, TMC final appearance, and was an undisputed top 5 player for a number of years. And he was also ranked number one for a brief time. If you're going to include Ferrero, then why not Moya as well? Or even Hewitt?

I agree. Ferrero was actually the favorite to win the French Open in 2002 and 2003, and a serious contender to win the French Open in both 2000 and 2001. His winning 1 time was atleast what he deserved for where he was slated in the clay court World at the time, arguably less.

NONE. Anyone who wind a gs title deserved it and nobody can take that away from them.
i don't think you guys understand what the original poster wrote. he asked about the worst player to win a slam, he didn't say they weren't any good or that they sucked at tennis.

you could theoretically rank every champion in every sport from best to worst champion. thats all this is, ranking someone as the worst champion is no reflection of how they compare to the rest of us or other pros in general just to the other pros who have won grand slams? GET IT?!

my gosh, where has reading comprehension gone...

I disagree. Gaudio had his best season in 2005 AFTER winning the french, in 2004.
