And Federer's backhand as well. Plus, Murray's "forehand from disneyland" can't produce enough speed. This title is totally Djokovic's. Though a great Nadal might cause some trouble.

Advantage Djokovic.

Can he win it without losing a set like Federer in 2007?

Looking at last year, he only dropped a set on route to the title. His draw is relatively similar this year as it was last year. He has a shot at it but I don't think it will happen.

Andy Murray is the only one who can pose a threat to Djokovic on a surface like this.

Yep. It's also less stressful for Murray to meet Djokovic in the SF than in the dreaded final of a slam. Murray has to get to the SF though. Tsonga might end up helping Djokovic again by taking out the biggest rival in the QF like it happened at Wimbledon last year.

At Wimbledon Federer was the biggest threat to Djokovic in 2011 and at the AO it appears that Murray might be the biggest rival to Djokovic this year.

I've played on these court and the quotation is exactly correct.

It's like playing on sandpaper and the balls look like mince meat at the end of play.

Great just what tennis needs. Another slow court.
It's Djokovic's title I agree but expect a short career for him and his peers.
Him and Murray will be finnished well before their thirties.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, last years matchs were good on this court especially the semi with fed vs djoker. So people who hate slow courts just get over it, for me it's still great tennis.

Tsonga?? Really? I don't know where people are getting the idea that Tsonga can upset Murray. Tsonga would have to play at his Wimbledon form to get it done. But the problem is his consistency, one day he's blasting winners then after he can barely get the ball in play.

I did not enjoy watching Djokovic and Nadal beat the sh1t out of one another at the USO final just because the powers that be want gladiatorial style tennis.
How long did it take Djokovic to recover from that?
Don't like seeing any player suffer unecessarily.
Sorry but the tennis authorities are completely irresponsible and out of order on this and you will see in a few years when you're beloved Djokovic is a physical wreck.

AO is Tsonga's best slam and he loves to play the match of his life against the first top player he meets only to bend over in the next. He can't beat two top 4 players back to back.

I hope Murray reaches the SF.

You think Djokovic still has issues with the Australian heat? I don't think he's over it completely but it's not as bad as it was back in 09/10.

Are you serious? You did not enjoy USO 11 it was a phenomenal match I guess it depends on ones taste. I love ground stroke tennis, serve and volley Is ok but I prefer what I saw in the USO 11. Don't get me wrong If that's not your thing then so be it but to say its killing tennis is too strong, so many tennis fans are really excited about the game right now me included.

I absolutely DREADED that match. You had to hit 5 winners to win a point. Rather just wait for 1 of that winners to be an error. I love rallies, but I like it when a good forehand down the line wins you a point. Seriously absolutely hated the match. It was great tennis, for sure. level was extremely high, but the level of defence was too high in my opinion, not making tennis fun to watch anymore. I like attacking tennis, so I'd like courts faster, balls lighter. Particularly since the USO is supposed to be the FASTEST Slam surface:shock:

Hang on, lets not get carried away here.

Wasn't it Djokovic, in the heat of Cincinnati that RETIRED from the Masters final (vs Murray) due to shoulder problems? Same conditions as Melbourne.

I am not a Nadal fan but this shoulder isssue has effected Djokovic FAR more than Nadal results wise:

Nadal made his shoulder worse during Davis Cup, but won his matches nevertheless and rested during off-season.
Djokovic made his shoulder problem an issue during Cincinatti that forced him to retire from the final + skip Asian swing

Djokovic's results have actually been effected by shoulder problems far more in conditions remarkably similar to Melbourne. And the only person to upset Djokovic in these pin point conditions is the Scot, Andrew Murray.

This just fuels the case further, Murray-Lendlised under less pressure in a SF of a slam is the only person out of Ralph and Rogi to pull off the upset.

You heard it here, folks.

Well, Federer has done some things on a slow hardcourt as well, so wouldn't count him out. If he finds the form he found against Hewitt, Tsonga and Murray in AO10, Djokovic is in for a fun final ;)

Cincy is atleast 10x faster than Melbourne. AO is tailor made for Novak's game.

Every year on this site i hear it for every tournament, they have slowed the courts down even more. I think that pretty soon the ball will only go 3 feet after the bounce even if hit 140 mph, or it might actually start sticking to the court.

For the last 8 years at least the claim is the same here, they are making the courts slower.I just wonder how much longer these slow court conspiracy claims can go on.

I guess that many did not pay attention to the part where joker said that the courts are slow but pretty much the same as last year. Now to me that sounds like they are the same as last year, but maybe that's just me because it seems it is much more popular to claim that the courts are slower.

Any new hard court surface will be more gritty and slower when first played on. If the local park gets a new surface it will be slower when brand new, but it will quickly lose the initial grit and play at normal speed.

So lets just enjoy the tournament and quit worrying about the surface speed, they are all playing on the same courts. So just like in any other year the player that plays the best will win.

IMO the tournament has been getting less exciting since 1988 which is the year the surface went from grass to hard. Since then, it has been getting slower and slower. Wonder if tennis will ever produce any more great serve/volley players like Rafter or Edberg ?

And yet Roger was able to defeat Novak on the slowest surface of all, odd that!

Also, interesting how the courts keep becoming magically slower.

In reality the slower courts will do nothing but help Roger, that is if he really is slower. No real way to worm out of this one.

Fed and djoker say the courts are slow, djoker loves these conditions his best slam. It djokers title all the way.

2008 he won, 2009 heat exhaustion, 2010 stomach bug after bad food vs tsonga 2011 he won, basically he loves AO

Yeah, he loves AO indeed. I agree this surface suits him perfectly. The fact that he doesn't win every year doesn't change that. The guy is good, but he's not Federer.

They used lighter balls, FO played fastest I've seen it ever play.

Personally I don't give a crap what would help Fed, I care about surface homogenization and slow dowin in general, it affects my enjoyment of the game, some of us like and miss the variety from the 90s .

Not that rebound ace usually played fast either so my beef is not with AO but with Wimbledon and USO.

Slightly offtopic, but let me point out what he says about the Olympics - which according to some of the posters (Nadal haters) here ist just a meaningless exo:
Q. You're one of Serbia's best chances to get a gold medal at the Olympics in 2012. You won bronze in Beijing. How do the Olympics play into your priorities this year?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: It's right up there. It's one of the biggest priorities this year, Olympic Games. I had that privilege and honor to represent my country in 2008 Beijing Olympics. It was a remarkable experience, like no other. Tennis is just one of so many sports that is present in the Olympic Games, which is the most prestigious, the most valuable, the most well‑known sporting event in the history of sport. That says enough.

The surface changed completely in 2008. The newer Plexicusion is way slower than the Rebound Ace they previously used. In the four years they've used it so far it has definitely been slowed at least once.

Last year also the balls they used seemed to fluff up quicker than previously - also slowing the conditions.

Perhaps it's the same this year as last - but it's still dead slow.

Whatever every year the courts are slowed down more and more, next year no player will even be able to hit a winner.

Strange things happen. The top 3 might get sick at some point in the tournament or something and then voila, we have a new GS champion...Murray perhaps ? You never know dude.

what all 3 of them? If this happens Murray will surely be the first suspect in some sort of poisoning plot

We're not saying the courts keep getting slower. That's a stupid thing to suggest and you should know it.
They're aready very slow same as last year.
It's disappointing they haven't sped up the courts.
The likes of Djokovic, Federer, Murray and Nadal will not be around much longer at this rate if that's what you want?
