Yonex Ezone Tour 98

Anyone here tried both and can compare? What is not mentioned is that the PAT would be better in maneuverability (6 HL balance).
I have. The review is pretty much spot on. The Yonex swings heavier and has more plow-through, is more comfortable, and has more than enough topspin for most users. The Pure Aero Tour has more power and a more raw feel, feels more whippy and maneuverable, and allows users with the right type of swing to hit heavy topspin more easily than with the Yonex. I would gravitate towards the PAT if you take a long, fast swing at almost every ball and want the spin itself to cause trouble for your opponents; I would gravitated towards the EZone Tour if you are more prone to blocking or finessing the ball sometimes, and if you want your ground strokes to penetrate the court faster using just enough topspin for a safe margin.

FWIW, I would say the Dunlop SX 300 Tour is what you would get if these two frames had a baby. It might be worth trying if you can't decide.

Definitely stiffer, less comfortable and slightly more power than the 330, but overall is stable and comfortable compared with the regular Ezone. The 330 feels fantastic though. TBH, I don't know which one I like better. The 330 is no slouch power-wise and is very soft with a good feel. The Tour has a little more power and spin. Both are really good!!

IMO the Ezone Tour feels the same if not softer than the 330. Full Poly in the 330 will sometimes irritate my elbow, but so far no issues with full bed of Hyper G in the Ezone. I do agree the Ezone Tour has a bit more power than the 330. I want to like the 330 more since I already have 3 of them, but the Ezone is a great racquet as well and am considering making the switch.

I have the 2015 Blade 18x20. How would this Ezone tour compare to '15 Blade? In terms of solidness on ball impact? Don't like an hollow feel like Babolat. Also the flex?

I feel the flex more on the 330. I could use either one for sure. I've went through so many different strings and have settled on Big Hitter Black 7 in the Ezone. It is the perfect string for that racket - soft, lots of spin.

Don’t bother demoing, just buy it!! It really is a remarkable racquet.
Yes, just buy it, mine has more than a day to go on the website where you bid on things and it is about to go over $200, I think this racket is going to be another one of my sales where the price goes OVER AND ABOVE what you can buy a new one for here on TW lol, it's better than demoing because you can get whatever string you want.

Just received mine, 332gr strung, that means that it was just on spot unstrung. Will be testing it on Monday since it is going to be raining all the weekend :|

Not to disparage Yonex QC because it’s clearly the best and I love Yonex, but your plastic wrapper weighs about 2 grams. Still really good though. Also, your strings may or may not be 17 grams exactly so it could potentially be closer to 315 if your strings are lighter based on gauge. Great racquet though!

I noticed going from 17 to 16 gauge poly adds about 2 grams, and 17 is 2 less. For example, I strung pro line evolution in a racquet and it weighed 344, and then rpm blast 16 and it weighed 346, no weight changes besides strings.

What strings are folks using on the racket that seem to be working well?
I'm thinking of a HyperG/Synthetic gut hybrid when i cut out the current yonex multifilaments.

HyperG 17 G @53 for me. I've tried 16 and 16L but 17 felt better. @53 since it's a good mix between control and power, just like this racquet.

Nice. I rarely change gauges so I haven’t weighed it but that’s good to know. Thanks.

You are pretty right, I guess it is somewhere in between 1 or 2 grams under spec but as you said, I think its still pretty good. Strings are 1.25mm (16L) poly pro tour, I read somewhere those where about 17 grams or I am incorrect? I understand this may also vary slightly from one string job to another.

I use Yonex Poly Tour Pro 16L @55lbs, I bought a reel. I change my strings every 10-12 hours, I have my own stringing machine.

How’s the control?
The first few hits when it’s freshly strung, the string bed is EXTREMELY lively. It takes about the time of a warmup for the strings to calm down and play well. I love the power, spin and control I get from YPTP strings. I have used Flash Yellow, Blue, Black and even Pink. The Flash Yellow is definitely my favorite color.

Is that based on the color itself, or does yellow actually play the best as well?

The black string was a little too flat and muted, blue was more active, flash yellow was the most lively. Pink played well too, but I definitely gravitate more towards the flash yellow.

After a very, very long wait, I finally received my demo of the Ezone Tour! It's strung with PTP yellow 1.25 at 53 pds, and the static weight is 328g with no dampener or overgrip. The balance, which I checked several times, is 32.5 cm, and is almost identical in specs as my DR 98, which really surprised me. I am looking forward to trying out the Tour during the next week, and will share my impressionss next weekend. I have a good feeling about it, because I received a rare under spec sample. :)

The weather was very good in my area this week, so I was able to play with the Ezone Tour on several different occasions, for a total of 8-9 hours of court time, playing mostly doubles, some singles, and an organized practice. For me, it didn't take very long to get dialed in, and the racquet was exceptional to play with. I also experienced no arm issues, and by the end of the week, I believe I was playing slightly better tennis! Currently, I only have two racquets in my bag, the Wilson Blade v7 98 18x20, and the Yonex Ezone DR98. However, earlier this year, I briefly owned the 2020 Yonex Ezone 98, the Yonex VCore Pro 310, and the 2018 Yonex Ezone Limited Edition.

Compared to the Blade, I thought the Ezone Tour played crisper & heavier, and did many things better, but not in the area of comfort, as the Blade is top notch in that category. With the Ezone Tour, my groundstokes were moving a little quicker, and I felt like I had more control (not sure I believe it yet), which meant I could keep rallies going a little longer. Compared to the DR 98, I think I liked almost everything better, except for maybe touch & feel, where the DR 98 is benchmark good. The Ezone Tour felt like a crisper, heavier, and more stable DR 98, with an equal or better amount of control from the baseline. Serving was about the same for all, but I felt like I was faulting less with the Ezone Tour, particularly on the first serve.

For my game, the Ezone Tour appears to be a very good fit, so I will probably be buying one, but will take my time, because the outdoor season is almost over in my area, and there is one more demo I would like to try. At the 4.0 level, I really don't feel like I need to have more than 2-3 racquets in my bag, so whenever get a new frame, I always try to reduce my inventory by the same amount, so nothing collects dust, and someone else can benefit.

Keep at it some more, I hit really murdersome biting slice backhand/forehand, approach shots, drop shots with the Ezone Tour. The last shot for me to be really confortable with is on the run forehand, still isn't as easy as my VCore pro, but I think it'll get there eventually.

Thanks for all the responses to the stringing question i had. I'm loving the racket on groundies, having some problem with serving with the balls sailing more long than usual though it could be a factor of playing outside on very windy days this weekend. Will try to adjust the game to this racket as it is very good. The best part for me is my arm issues are gone after playing with this, very happy with that aspect.

Does anyone's Ezone tour 98 chip easily? I've had 3 chips so far, prob about 1-3 mm in diameter across the 3 chips. Anways, I'm looking to get 1 or 2 more Ezone tour 98s in 4 3/8 if anyone is looking to sell theirs :D

I had a small chip on mine too.. other users have also reported it in the thread. Guess we'll have to live with it for now.

Ughhh, I hate seeing chips on my racket, but I think, correct me if im wrong, racquets that aren't matte chip way easier. I think matte finish rackets just scuff and scratch easier

I think it could be something with how they finished this particular racket. I didn't notice issues of chipping easily with my Head Gravity Pros or Wilson PS97 I used previously. I still love this racket over all others so will continue to play with it; maybe I'll have to be just a little extra careful with getting to those low balls :p

So you thought ezone tour had more control than blade v7 18x20? Thats a high bar imo.. can you elaborate?

I know. It's kind of counterintuitive, but I think the extra mass and less muted response made me feel a little more confident with my eastern forehand grip. I also looked very closely at the string-bed of each racquet, and didn't think there was too much difference in the density, even though the EZ Tour is 16x19. I have owned the Blade for about a year, and have tried several different string set ups, but I can't help wondering how it would play with the same exact string and tension as my EZ Tour demo. :)

Just got my Ezone tour today and rally for 2hours in it. I feel like I'm hitting with an 18x20 racquet. It has a low trajectory. If you like hitting the ball early and flat you love this stick. I'm using RF97A currently and before that 2015 blade 18x20.

I am interested to know if the 98 Tour and the 98 are the same racket with different weights or are they a different racket?
Some say one thing, some say the other.
I am afraid the 315g will be too much for me so but if it's that much better I'll go for it. So I am not sure which one to get.

If 315 will be too much for you, you just answered your question. The regular Ezone is an awesome racquet as well. There is a separate Ezone 98 thread and I bet more people use that stick than the Tour. Obviously if you ask in this thread we will tell you the Tour is better because you are asking mainly Ezone 98 Tour owners.

To answer your question, just think of them as brothers instead of twins. Not the same but still same family. I couldn't customize my Ezone 98 with lead + leather grip as well as the Ezone 98 Tour since the Tour had the weight difference distributed evenly through the racquet + maybe 2-3 grams more to get it slightly more head heavy.

Anyways, the slight advantage of the Tour (more stability, plow through) isn't worth if you find the weight too much. I would only recommend the Tour to players who actually like 315-320 unstrung weight racquets.

That is a great reply, thank you.
I was just curious if there is anything else to the Tour besides the weight. But from your answer I guess it's mainly the way the weight is distributed?
Maybe I can ask a Yonex rep if he knows more about this. I am also getting a pro stock 98 to test after the Ostrava tournament is over.

Weight distribution is part of the equation. There is also a layup difference - the Tour has a softer throat and hoop than the standard 98. So think of one as lighter and stiffer and the other as heavier and more flexible. You can add weight to the standard 98 to "match it" to the Tour but it will not play or feel the same. Both are great in their own way in my opinion - the standard 98 will give you a little more "for free" if you know what I mean.

I feel you. I need a soft frame but maybe the 315g will be an overkill. Anyway, I get to try both two weeks from now. A prostock 98 and the Tour. We’ll see what I prefer.

Nice. Interested to hear how the prostock hits. The standard 98 was a little too powerful/launchy for me.

I'll try to keep you in mind and let you know if I'll be of any use. From what she told me it's not supposed to be very different from the retail frames with yonex.
She for example just uses an older version of the vcore painted like the current one.

May I ask for a comparasion between the Tour and Blade 98 2015, please. I use the Blade and it has a high sw. I have no lead but a Wilson leather grip plus og and dampener. Is the Ezone easier or harder to swing? Thx in advance
For me its easier to swing. This one feels like my customized '15 Blade but with a added bonus of a 16x19. Also I tried the DR98 before but that was too flexible for me.
