SHANGHAI (AP) Nick Kyrgios will have to pay $16,500 in fines for his bizarre actions at the Shanghai Masters.

The Australian tennis player received one of the largest fines of his career on Friday for his lack of effort and argumentative behavior during his second-round match. He was fined the maximum $10,000 for showing a ''lack of best efforts'' in a match, $5,000 for verbal abuse of a spectator and $1,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Kyrgios rushed through his 6-3, 6-1 loss to German qualifier Mischa Zverev on Thursday, failing to put any speed on some serves and hitting erratically on his groundstrokes. At one point, he walked toward his chair after floating a serve across the net without even waiting for Zverev's return.

Late in the match, Kyrgios also responded angrily to a fan who criticized him by shouting back, ''You want to come here and play?''

He was booed and jeered several times.

The fiery Australian is known for his on-court tirades and frequent battles with umpires and fans. Last year, he also insulted a player, Stan Wawrinka, during a match in Montreal.

Kyrgios received $12,500 in fines for his behavior in that match, as well as a possible 28-day suspension and a further $25,000 fine if he picked up any other major offenses over the following six months. That probation period ended in February.

On Friday, top-ranked Novak Djokovic said he believed Kyrgios has some ''life lessons to learn.''

''Not many great things are spoken about him lately,'' Djokovic said. ''I'm sorry to hear that, because I share the opinion of many players and many people in the tennis world that he's one of the greatest talents the game has seen lately.''

Appropriate action. Suspect Kyrgios was unable to bring his best anyhow for this match, but his antics need consequences. To Kyrgios's credit Mischa Zverev did win his next match, and Zverev should get some credit for beating Kyrgios. I suspect the serve velocity issue in general was the Kyrgios back. He was disgusted that when up 40-15 on his serve in the first set that he could not hold his serve and after losing three straight points we got the Sureshs special with the walk to the chair in flight.

16500 usd fine is a joke. This is what the brat spends in a night club... It's just bragging reasons for him to his friends. I bet he'll spend 20000 in a whim just to show he "couldn't care less"

I enjoy his more harmless antics but this isn't funny anymore. He shouldn't have tanked like that... hopefully he never repeats a this. C'mon Nick... man the f*** up.

The brat needs to be fined more and given a kick in his pants.

Reminds me of that phrase from PF's The Final Cut ... "overgrown infants". Poor job mum and dad did bringing him up, he is bringing shame to them.

I got a few inside emails about this.

Kyrgios's light serves were indeed a tribute to the Sureshs video series. That has been confirmed by multiple sources who spoke to Nick after his Asian fiasco.

Due to Sureshs's controversial standing as an Internet Poobah, this will most likely never be made public. But Krygios believes in and stands with the Spray. You can be assured of that.

LMAO, you got me by surprise there !

..
Kyrgios needs to upgrade to the Texas Twister; its a reverse spin serve that moves about 15 mph and tends to bounce low. Might win some of those. Not as effective for tanking as the Sureshian 2nd.

My own personal favorite is the drop serve, but again might actually win some points. Drop serve only has a shot if you have a big serve. Very popular with the opponents.

Sewretch should sue for copyright infringement after Poobgios mimicked his Poobartoli serve, then funnel some of the settlement to Maid Marion to aid in her ongoing health issues that manifested after watching the Sewretch gif in loop during her post-retirement exercise regimen.

Suresh makes it look easy. That's why his 135 MPH serves look as if they are 13.5 MPH. His main weapon in his game is his serve, the second is his size.

Now we know Djokovic won't win a single more slam for sure. Thank you.

Nonsense! Sewretch's major weapon has been and will always be his "aura"...you are behind 0-5, 0-40 before you even hit a ball just from his overwhelming superiority to everyone on this forum. No wonder LeeDF keeps ducking him!:p:D

A $16,000 fine is a joke. That's change for Nick. They need to send a real message and fine him $250,000. Then the spoiled brat might grow up.

Is BeatleFan Stringer Tom having a *** ? (Oh for the love of Christ, this stupid American forum wont let me write f@g ! - For those idiot Americans who can't speak ENGLISH : A F@G is a CIGARETTE - Nothing else ...)

Stringertom looks menacing...

" NICK Kyrgios is no longer at the top of the French Open’s hit list.

The feisty Australian - docked $6200 for an audible obscenity during a third-round loss - previously held the “honour” of attracting the heaviest fine at Roland Garros this year.

Not any more.

In a move which will doubtlessly disappoint Kyrgios’ detractors, he has been overtaken by German talent Alexander Zverev and the usually docile Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro.

Zverev now leads the French Open fines race after copping a $8300 penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct during his loss to Austrian Dominic Thiem.

And 12th seed Suarez Navarro was pinged $7000 for receiving coaching during her fourth-round defeat.

Kyrgios was given a code violation at the end of the second set of his match for swearing.

The world No.19 escaped penalty for yelling ‘towel’ after being reported by umpire Carlos Ramos during his first-round match.

Tournament officials reviewed footage of the incident and quickly cleared Kyrgios."

Yelling Towel Incident-Cleared--

That's the sort of fine you give when you want to appease the public who are calling for action to be taken, not the fine you give if you actually want to punish and change behaviour.

I still think he should have been banned for the period covering Basel and Paris so he couldn't simply show up and collect his minimum $40,000 AUD there.

And of course he hasn't learned anything from the media backlash. Look at his Twitter, especially his Likes page to get an up to date picture of the state of his mind.

In the last 12 hours he's complained that "it never ends", retweeted a quote where Djokovic talks positively about him and tweeted another complaint about the controversy still raging. He is immune to learning from criticism. Total and complete it's so unfair, everyone's out to get me mentality.

Nick just a little tired from last week. The above is an astounding point. Sometimes you get this tennis fans. Kyrgios was amazing in Japan and fizzled in Shanghai, just a little more spectacturaly than most.:p Kyrgios will come through as Goatios before long; patience.

Exactly, hardly a surprise though is it? The people who run tennis are absolutely spineless on a lot of issues; their punishments always seem just to show they are doing something, because they don't want to upset their players too much. What kind of leadership is that?

He should be seriously investigated for match fixing. Find any suspicious betting activity on one of his tankjobs, ban him.

It's what they'd do to someone on the Challenger tour.

Nick will be one of these players that will put it together when he feels like it for two weeks and win a major or two. Never will he be a #1 or anything like that.

You don't tank a match like that if your fixing it for betting. He shouldn't be that stupid, or is he? lol

Excuse me for saying this but there is nothing interesting or of a high quality in this point except that it has a tweener where the lazy bum should have come to the net to finish but he just enjoys making every point longer and dull.

He could have finished point with the first volley but didn't. I also didn't find the "highlight" points from that match to be all that interesting.
