Jolly's Polys

ByeByePoly

G.O.A.T.
When I came back to playing I started with basic synthetic, then switched to multifiliment for better playability, then that broke too quickly so I used a poly ribbon string, then that broke too quickly so I switched to a poly/multi blend then that broke too quickly so I switched to full poly then that broke too quickly so I tried a bunch of cheap and/or durable strings before settling on the Kevlar/Poly blend, then that broke all my racquets.

broke college student here..have no idea what "pick up a new stick everytime" means..

it was a joke. ie. he has so many racquets because when he breaks strings, he just buys a entire new racquet rather than restringing the “old” one.

oh i got that bit..I was being facetious..
arghhh... i missed the joke! good one. that said, when I was a broke college kid, i couldn't afford any type of decent string (ahem, no poly)... i'd probably be using nylon, or occasionally "splurge" on syngut.

I feel you! Have been using reel of Isospeed Baseline. Cheap budget poly that does the job for this 4.0 hack. Atleast its not Forten Tournament Nylon (was using that at one point too lol)....

yeah, i have a reel of 15g baselien too... nice and cheap...
i have splurged though, and bought a reel of lux alu power, which surprisingly has not broken in 2-4h (like prev poly: kirsch, rpm, etc...), so despite being double the price, alu might actually be decent price to longevity ratio. (ie. 8h)

RS Lyon: Initial impressions

It strung up nicely, I didn't get a mic reading but it seems thinner than advertised. I have historically liked strings with pearl coatings, I don't know why, and though this string isn't coated, it has kind of a gossamer shimmer that makes me happy. I strung it at 50# in my normal GPMP.

I started out hitting a smattering of practice serves just trying to stay loose and be smooth through the motion. It grabbed the ball nicely and made a proper "Wkkkt" sound with nice action off the bounce even with an easy swing and wet, dead, clay balls from the teaching cart. Once my arm was sufficiently warm and I gave it the beans the string was right there with me, the ball made a sound and went fast. What more could you ask for?

After taking serves we warmed up with some mini tennis. This string is not at all soft; it's not omg stuff like BBO either. Firm is a good word for it, very firm. This is a very mature, controlled and predictable string, like a more sophisticated version of Gamma iO. There is not much give or string travel, it plays tight, but the ball goes exactly where it should and if it didn't go where you wanted it is pretty clearly your fault.

Backing up to the baseline I found more of the same, once we were warmed up we did some cooperatives cross court drills and though I didn't really get after it because it was a cooperative drill, I did have an obligation to my people to ensure that this wasn't like some other strings *cough* Tour Bite *cough* that tapped out or cried uncle once you start swinging faster, so I put a little mustard on a few balls and it responded beautifully.

I finished up with some basket drills and it was more of the same, the RS doesn't have that one exceptional quality that would make it like Luxilon; actually, it plays a lot like adrenaline, like adrenaline's older brother.

Durability? Looks like it's not going to last long at all with just over half an hour of relaxed hitting it's pretty notched.

Bottom line: Low powered, firm, even response, good bite. Recommended for players with mature, developed strokes, perhaps in the image of a Nalbandian or Pouille.

How does it stack up to Jolly's angels? This is not an angel, it's more like a high end escort; beautiful, seductive, does whatever you want looking and feeling great in the process, but it's expensive and doesn't last long.

RPM broke in 2 hours?
something like that 2-4h... i just remember it feeling great until it broke (ie. strung on sunday, then had to restring again on wed)
it's also possible it was used durign heavy drill days.. (ie. more balls hit per hour, typically cooperative - so more clean "big" shots, etc..)

Back in the frying-pan-radical (pro) days I could shred anything in max 3 hrs. No matter how hard I tried, I had to cut the RPM. It was the one redeeming quality :D Hated that stuff.

I actually like them looser but it becomes an adventure in the hot summer, especially if they have been sitting in my bag a while so I just string everything at 50# and let it fly.

Yep, I string at 50 lbs for the same reason; to stay consistent throughout the year. I do love low tensions as well (thirties) and mess about with them every now and then depending on time. Will take low over high tensions (60 & above) anyday.

It's funny, the better I get, the less I care. Before I used to have frames strung at all different tensions and blah blah blah. Now I break a string, hit a few balls with the new one and I'm like oh, this is how it is.

I mean everything as in all of my racquets at the same tension as opposed to some tighter and some looser.

Kevlar is stupid, it doesn't know how tight you string it, so tension is only important for the cross. I strung mine very tight so that the cross would back it up longer. If I didn't, the stringjob would flop around like a soggy banana after a little bit.

oops sorry for being unclear. i knew you meant you strung them all the same as opposed to some looser and tighter. I meant whether this applied if you had 2 or more racquets strung at the same time with different strings e.g one has a full bed of poly and another has a kevlar hybrid, (with the kevlar in the mains obviously) do you string both the racquet with the kevlar hybrid at 50lbs, and the racquet with the full poly at 50lbs

Oh, I gotcha. I would string anything I tried at 50# to start and see how it felt, then adjust the next stringing up or down as needed until I found what I like and then stick with that.

RS Lyon final thoughts: As predicted, the RS didn't last long, but I managed to play some doubles before it broke.

I served pretty well with it, no better or worse than anything else. On volleys it was perfectly even but without much pop at all.

Towards the end it got a bit unpredictable, but what doesn't? It was honestly better than most polys at retaining its playability until the end.

I wish it were a touch softer, warmer, and lasted longer. Perhaps I should have strung it a bit looser.

All things considered, this is a very good string.

Sure I'm being picky, but it is expensive and with a high price point, you have to deliver. This would be a fantastic string at $12.

Interesting. For $13.95 a set, it does deliver though. We have plenty of brands (Yonex, Signum Pro, Diadem, Babolat etc) strings that are more expensive and have less to offer. Not just those but quite a few other strings that are pricier and not as good.

Don't get me wrong, I would not mind cheaper RS Lyon. But it is a premium poly that plays like one. You can get cheap Cyclone for 7 bucks a set, but that will play like it too. I hate paying whatever I pay for RS Lyon but it is still a much better bang for the buck. Also, in a market full of overpriced strings, it fits in well where it atleast gives you your moneys worth.

But then again, tastes are subjective. I think Lux ALU - which really suits my game btw - is grossly overpriced for $17.95 a set because of how quickly it dies. I would rather pay $13.95 than $17.95 for a string that lasts longer and plays like it does - even if it is not Lux. What do I know though. All my spare racquets have Cyclone in them.

Old Gamma iO review.

I was asked by a friend to try this, and to review it. Being the tennis junkie that I am, I gladly agreed, and so it was strung up in my BLXPS90 at 48# and to the courts with it I went.

I playtested it on slow outdoor country club clay courts (Har-tru), I hit for about 20 minutes with a very good (5.0+) player, and then played about 20 minutes of points (serve and play the point out). And then I hit for another 45 or so minutes with the emerging world-beater Mr. Pickle.

Honestly, I was quite pre-biased, I thought this stuff was going to suck, but I ended up being quite pleasantly surprised.

My absolute number one priority for a string is for it to bite the ball. I can swing plenty fast, but if the ball just slides off the strings, it is of no value. I can make up, and adjust for lots of things; lack of bite isn't one of them.

This string answers the bell, it bites like a sonofa...

Off the ground, it feels just fine, bites hard, and spin is easy to generate of either side if you can swing the racquet fast.

The launch angle of the ball is a good amount higher than it feels like it should be. It is a somewhat strange thing, the string is stiff (but not harsh) and feels like it is strung tighter than it is, but launches the ball on a higher angle like it was strung looser than it is. It is by no means a dealbreaker, just an interesting quirk. I had it figured out in 10-15 shots and was happily hitting the ball where I wanted to on the arc that I wanted to.

What it doesn't have is that Luxilon "pop" where the ball just jumps off of the strings, and then when you swing faster and faster, you get more than any other string will give you. Anyone who plays ALU knows exactly what I am talking about.

Due to the lack of zip, I had to make a conscious effort to put a little extra mustard on my rally shots.

Topspin B+: It hit a clean, tightly spun ball, with excellent directional and depth control. The only thing missing was the pop, and additional nasty spin you get from a top tier poly.

Flat B: I decided to put a charge into a few balls to see how the string responded; it answered the call with a loud "Blat" and the ball went fast. No complaints what so ever, when you need to straighten one out, this stuff can do the job.

Slice A: Very, very nice slices. The lack of pop wasn't an issue, and the heavy bite of the string made for a nice low skidding ball.

Volley and mid court B: The stuff volleys about as well as any poly can be expected to. No fuss, no surprises. The ball goes where you want it to, and the bite of the stringbed gives great control, and a nice skid. Half volleys, and putaways were all fine.

Serve B: Fine, no issues, nice clean ball, did whatever was asked of it. Felt like I got good pace and/or kick on the ball.

I can't comment on tension maintenance because I break strings so quickly, as for durability, I suspect that it is not great since it was notched pretty well after 20 minutes of hitting, and 20 minutes of point play. It probably lasts about as long as ALU, maybe a bit more?

Is it as good as ALU, or the Jolly Rig II?

No.

Is it the best poly under $12 I have ever hit with?

Possibly

Does it blow 4G out of the water?

Definitely.

I don't think the best use of this string is in a full job because to me the Luxilon strings are worth the extra $5.

I think it would be an amazing main string in a poly/non-poly hybrid, where the cross could add a bit more pop to the setup, and the iO main could grab the ball.

I am not sure if it would make a good cross string for a non poly main. It is possible, but there are likely better alternatives. If I had to guess, I would say it wouldn't be the best cross string, since just plucking at the bed with my fingers it seems to bind up a bit with itself, so I am not sure it would allow another main to slide well over it.

I will hit with it a bit more tomorrow on a hard court.

As always, I am glad to answer any questions.

I haven't. I do have a set of iO soft lying in my stash. But I'm guessing that would play much different.

Great review of the iO. Really enjoyed reading it. It sounds a lot like ZoVerve which they don't make anymore. Rather unfortunate because I really liked that one. That thing had a bite. Would rip fuzz off like you would not believe.

Solinco Hyper G: Initial Review

I hit with it for a few minutes from the baseline yesterday then played a doubles match this morning.

It's pretty nice! It has good bite and has a nice bit of softness without being mushy. Nice pop. The only knock on it is that it's a bit unpredictable, if you are the kind of player who loads the ball up with spin and aims for a safe target, this is the stuff for you.

Serves were fine, good pop and action. And I appreciated the little bit of softness and jump off the stringbed on volleys.

Value was great for $12 it is fairly priced.

I can't comment on durability yet and will see how it holds up. In my experience textured poly loses a lot of bite after you knock the edges off by hitting a little.

Best Solinco string I have ever played for sure. Just maybe not for the precision player. Hopefully it doesn't drop off a cliff performance wise like some others have.
