Yep. I'm not definitively saying it was the best match I ever saw, but the level of play, from both players, was off the charts.

Don't know if this is already here but I lost a good half hour of my life enthralled by this. Arthur Ashe -v- Ilie Nastase:

What I love about watching Borg is his forehand still holds up to today’s standards ..the shape of his rolling cross court forehands is just pure artistry .. and I absolutely love the way his racket sounds as blasts away I always expect a “ thhhhhhwock” but instead it’s a mild “ keenck” ..

44:00 for amazing footwork on display. Gonzo was the king at this IMO, running around the backhand to hit inside in, other than the greats of the game.

I agree this match set a new standard for tennis. Prior to the Nadal Federer matches I always regarded this the best tennis match ever.

Borg is like the father of the modern game and interestingly enough he played the way he did because he refused to listen to instructions of how tennis "should" be played and just played the way that suited him the best. People throughout his career always told him to change things. His backhand was "wrong", he used too much wrist on forehand and so on but he was very stubborn and refused to change and stuck to what he felt was right for him. I read this book now, "Bjorn Borg, My Life and Game" and it is really interesting stuff about his views on his game and tennis in general. One very interesting thing is that he claims that up until 1976 he used his western forehand grip for forehand volleys too and thus his volley was terrible. He changed to a continental grip too improve his volleying but that is the only stroke he tried to imitate others and only because he realised it was more effective to play volleys that way.

Someone put the final set of the 1974 women's final King v Goolagong on YouTube. This one went to the wire and it includes some marvelous wood tennis alongside some pretty big ouches. I offer up this clip as really high quality by both including a perfect return game by Evonne to break back late in the third, and an incredible 12 stroke rally at 2:00 at 0-30 in that perfect game. ( you will know it when you see it)

I roll on floor peeing myself of laughter everytime a see someone claiming that the greatest time of sport (any sport at all) are long gone.

the athletic performance is nowadays 10 times bigger that in the 70's. and this goes for tennis too.

i wonder why people dont compare Rene Lacoste with Bill Tilden... saying those were the days... lets face it. tennis is now more developed than it was back then in every single aspect....

ps: no... im not 16 years old... im am 30.
Okay, I’ll take you at your word, literally.

Jack Kramer hit a forehand measured at 108 mph.

I am waiting to see a 1080 mph forehand today.

Or, perhaps you were engaging in hyperbole.
(Having also urinated on myself from uncontrollable laughter leading to loss of bladder restraint, I must go change clothes.)

If tennis is "more developed" now, why can so few women volley? Or is it that they are so developed they don't need to volley?
And as for women serving and volleying ....

Perhaps "developed" equates as lack of variety or versatility?

That ball bounce at 1'35"!! No-one these days can really understand what it could be like on 'old' grass.

I've occasionally wondered how many Wimbledon titles Evert would have if the grass had been as it is now as opposed to her own era. I think my money would be safe to suggest that she'd have at least one more title.

I have read somewhere that the quality of grass courts at Forest Hills were the absolute worse of all three majors for low and bad bounces. Kooyung had the natural advantages of a dryer climate and a higher bounce, and Wimbledon just poured a ton of love and work into upkeep both all year long and during the tournament.

That is my very favorite answer. Would that my former wife had employed the same four word reply just once in the course of our decade long experiment.... She always changed it to a three word reply. Every friggin time for 10 years.

It is good that you escaped, apparently intact.

I will just ignore this pathetic attempt at humurous reasoning in questiong factual verifiable facts with stupid hyperbole of imaginary 1080 mph forehand and attribute it to dementia or age based loss of intelectual faculties....

You would.

BY the way, two of the the words you were attempting are "humorous" and "intellectual."

I will just ignore this pathetic attempt at humurous reasoning in questiong . . .
“questiong”? I am not even certain what this word was trying to be, possibly “questioning.”

this pathetic attempt at humurous reasoning in questiong factual . . . facts
Here, you used the word “factual” to describe facts. It seems uselessly redundant to refer to facts as factual.

Your third grade English teacher called, and she wants your diploma back.
