Ramirez Beats Gottfried in Final on Coast

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 27 (AP)—Raul Ramirez of Mexico broke service in the 10th game of the third grueling set last night and went on to defeat topseeded Brian Gottfried and win the $100.000 Southern California open tennis charnnionshin 7‐5. 3‐6. 6‐4.
Ramirez, seeded third, earned $14,000. Gottfried, from Lauderhill, Fla., won $7,000.
In the third set of the nearly threehour match, Gottfried broke service in the first game, but Ramirez broke back in the next, and in the fourth game. Gottfried rifled off 13 straight points, breaking Ramirez in the seventh game and holding his serve in the sixth.
But, with the score at 5‐4 for Ramircz, he broke Gottfried's service in the 10th at 0‐40.
Frew McMillan of South Africa and Sandy Mayer of Wayne, N.J., beat Tom Leonard and Mike Machette, both of California, in the doubles final, 6‐2, 6‐2.
Borg Defeats Newcombe
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C., Sept. 27 (AP)—Bjorn Borg, showing no signs of his recent shoulder injury, defeated John Newcombe of Australia, 6‐2, 6‐4, today in the opening match of the World Invitational Tennis Classic.
In another men's singles match, Roscoe Tanner beat Vitas Gerulaitis, 6‐7, 6‐4, 7‐6. In women's doubles, Evonne Goolagong and Kerry Melville Reid beat Virginia Wade and Dianne Fromholz, 5‐7, 6‐1, 6‐4.
It was Borg's first appearance since he withdrew from the quarterfinals in the United States Open at Forest Hills three weeks ago with a painful shoulder injury.
