He's so good... this guy hits the ball so hard that I get dizzy when I watch him on my big plasma screen TV.

Is there ANY possibility that this guy could surpass Federer, Sampras, and Roddick in the GOAT debates? Or is he already too old? I hope not, he's so exciting. so much potential...

I heard Safin will retire at 30....if he played his best tennis NOW until his retirement, he still wouldnt be a candidate for GOAT....so sad...im a safin fan :(

There is more to being a good tennis player than hitting the ball hard.

I thought his match with Roddick at the Australian was extremely interesting. Somehow, Roddick was actually out-hitting him from the baseline. I couldn't believe it.

I am a huge Roddick fan, but I never thought he would win that match so easily. Seems like one of the few top players that Roddick actually matches up wel against.

Anyway, Safin is nuts. Is this a serious thread?

if he says he is going to retire at 30, which is like 2010,...he could still become the GOAT...he has 2 grand slams, and if he won every slam starting with this year's french open till the 2010 us open, he'd be the GOAT..

17 slams, 3 GRAND slams (2008, 2009, 2010)....since he'd win all the slams you'd figure he'd win like 8-9 titles each year as well, .....:)

btw i didnt know roddick was in GOAT debates....LOL...i thought GOAT debates only involved the panel of sampras, federer, laver, borg....

he needs to get mature and get rid of his on-court sentiment.
look at how much Fed has improved ever since he no longer gets angry on court.

No he won't because he doesn't want to be. He's said more than once that he just doesn't want to live eat breathe tennis like some of the other players do. He has a pretty good life and he seems to be okay with his decision.

if you believe that Roddick is a candidate for GOAT then sure- Safin will be the GOAT eventually.

Nope. However, he could increase his all time great status by focusing on winning one French and one Wimbledon to complete a non-calender Slam like Agassi, before he retires of course.

no doubt about it, safin is an excellent player.... the way he beat federer in AO 2005 semi final, showed that he is capable of beating anyone and come back to no.1 again.....

From the interviews and words of wisdom from the Big Man over the years, he has never intimated that his ambition in ife is to be known as the GOAT. His ambition is to enjoy life and all it's various aspects before he gets too old.

And the year he sees as being "old" is 30.

And he has said on numerous occasions he's tired of prople saying he's wasted his talent, because it's his life.

So there. LOL

He certainly has the talent & the GOODs to be GOAT.
I sincerely hope he atleast gets another 5 slams before he retires. - that might not make him GOAT but as we all know Safin - the show he'll put on getting those five slams will certainly make him GOATIOH ( GOAT in our hearts ).

He's one of my favourite players.

But, sorry. G.O.A.T? no.

But he does make tennis more exciting and fun to watch.

The greats have more fluency to their game than Safin. When he won that 5 setter against that little short guy ranked about 200 at the AO, the short guy actually seemed to have more fluent strokes. A long long way from GOAT. Besides he's getting heavier, so his best tennis is likely past him.

I like Safin...I really do, but I am surpised how many people took this seriously enough to contemplate HOW he could become the GOAT. ;)

if hitting big and being a good ballstriker allows someone to be GOAT, then there are a ton of other ppl out there who beat Safin.

when i first saw him i was scared, i thought oh no, he's going to beat agassi and sampras and demolish everyone. but then the slow realization began. kinda like watching novotna at wimbledon against graf. slowly i began to think, "wow she's really nervous".

Safin reaching GOAT staus if incredibly unlikely. However what is possible, although also very unlikely, is an Agassi like come back. Safin has worked has way back up into the top 25 in the rankings having been outside the top 100 at some point last year. Realistically though 1 more slam is the most I expect Safin to win.

Safin is a GOAT, but he will never be the tennis GOAT as he has a 2hbh. Only one handers can become GOAT.

Agassi had 3 slams at about the point Safin now is at with 2. So if Safin followed Agassi's lead he could win most of his slams from now on, Agassi won 5 of his 8 after the same point, so Safin following the same path might win another 4 or something. I dont think Safin will follow Agassi's path though. He doesnt have anywhere near the force of will to do something like that.

PS: "another racket bit the dust"... andres, it must be one of your favorite songs !!!
Safin walks warily down the street,
with the frame pulled way down low
Aint no sound but the sound of his beam,
Prestiges are ready to go

Now that I think about it, both uses Prestiges CLassics. Perhaps it's a NICE racquet to smash!! I should give them a try (at smashing them, of course! :D)

Ahh, what about: ?

Are you happy, are you satisfied
How long can you stand the heat
Out of the doorway the RACQUETS rip
To the sound of the beat!

Ahhh, way better :D

I love my plasma. We still use it as our main TV, in despite of having another modern TV, that we placed to our rec room. The old plasma has lower res and no wifi, but intensity and clarity are actually way better.
