Kerber to Andreescu: you're the biggest drama queen ever"

I just watched highlights with her and Kerber.

Prediction: once the tour gets used to her extreme moonballing she will have severe problems with keeping up with the top guns.

Her movement is also quite suspect.

Which top guns? She's been beating top guns all year. Sure she's not played Naomi but its not Bianca's fault Naomi is losing early in these last two tournaments. And not her fault Serena has been pulling out with injury.

Sloane Stephens won a US Open with less game than Andreescu. The WTA is ripe for the picking these days. If you can junkball and then show power, you can beat a lot of women.

I just finished watching the highlights of the kerber Andreescu match and heard kerber say to her, "you're the biggest drama queen ever", at the net.
I'm a huge Kerber fan, but that sort of bitchyness is totally inappropriate and uncalled for.
She is usually so humble and should just accept that she lost to a better player. Bianca is on the rise and is not going away anytime soon.

I haven't heard much about this exchange in the news just yet, but feel like if Serena or someone else had done it, it would be in the headlines.

Come on Angie, you won 3 slams, at 3 different tournaments you should be grateful for the career you've had so far.

You should be ashamed of yourself girl!

Well she does have a better head and body than Kerber. That counts for a lot.

Kerber is popular and accepted among the other players - Andreescu is not so ! That says everything.

Obviously. People know Kerber, and it's not like she's an angel even though she might pretend to be one. They don't know Andreescu yet so clearly Kerber is the more accepted of the two. This is very simple, and as far as any of us know now has nothing to do with Andreescu being unlikable, and everything to do with the service time on tour of the two players.

Anyone remember the set & score when Bianca took the MTO?

I vaguely remember that Kerber herself was talking to someone that appeared to be the trainer, but maybe it was just a consultation without actually taking the MTO.
It was in the first set, and fairly early.

Andreescu had a shoulder stiffness problem going back to last week.

It was a legitimate MTO, no one complained or protested, and I don't think that Kerber has not used MTO when needed.

No, Kerber owes an apology here. Hopefully, Kerber has already apologized to Andreescu in private.

Andreescu is just coming back from a fractured foot last year, perhaps caused by those lovely hard rubber courts we have on the tours.

She has a number of injury issues, so taking one (not two, but ONE) MTO in the first set of last night's match is a normal procedure, and I strongly

doubt that Kerber had ANY difficulty understanding that.

Dan Lobb

G.O.A.T.
No, I just have a functioning pair of eyes

I've only watched a handful of her matches and in every single one of them she looked like she was on the verge of collapsing from injury/exhaustion/whatever but still miraculously pulled out the win in the end.

If Nadal or Djokovic pulled these stunts with this kind of regularity, we wouldn't hear the end of it
Where did you see the abuse? No one else saw it.

A broken foot is not an injury? Really.

Are you sure she's playing possum and not actually tired, on the verge of cramping and has a shoulder injury? I watched her interactions with her coach at IW and she seemed to be legitimately dying out there in the heat. Hard to fake that kind of despondency. She also totally changes her game plan to going for winners when she gets like this. If she was playing possum, she wouldn't go straight to shortening points.

I think calling it "staged" is a pretty uncalled for accusation. Bianca has had injuries and has played a lot of tennis. I suspect if this wasn't a Premier Mandatory event, she'd be taking a little time off.

1. Yes, she is playing possum.
2. Hard to fake? Not with her level of gamesmanship.
3. Shortening points, going for winners, is in chapter one of the possum handbook.
4. While you might think its an uncalled for accusation, I don't.
5. She's playing a lot of tennis? She's 18, and a professional tennis player. Isn't that what they're supposed to do? If she wants to continue with her acting career, she should split her court time with casting calls.

Put yourself in Kerber's shoes. You play this teenager twice in the span of about a week and in both matches she's taking MTOs and looking like she's dying out there or has the physical conditioning of a player in her 40s. Yeah, that's a drama queen if I ever saw one.

Then I guess many WTA players are playing possum and faking their way through tennis matches....really?

BUT we only get one nasty, bad sport, venomous slur from a poor sport German player, who would not even remotely DREAM of doing the same

butcher-mouth assault against an established star tennis player.

Why would it happen here? Because this is a rookie, who does not have the clout of Serena to protect here from criticisms of fellow players.

If Kerber really was concerned about Andreescu's style of play, she would have talked to her in private, in a calm, controlled way.

But I have seen Kerber herself pump her fist, "play possum" (like you claim Andreescu does), pretend to be dead on her feet, wrap a dressing around her leg

(last night), and then suddenly, when she is down 4-1 in the second set, turn on the after-burners and play like Superwoman to win the set.

That looks like "playing possum", right?

Read my post..."last year"., not this year. Read before replying, please.

Yes, she suffered a "stress fracture" (due to the hard rubber courts? my guess), which set back her progress in the game, otherwise she would have been wiping

the floor with established pros even earlier than this.

There is no reason to doubt her shoulder problem, and ONE MTO is NOTHING...

Kerber was certainly not worrying about the one MTO, fake news.

Regardless, broken foot and broken shoulder in one year. Wow

Two MTOs in two matches from Kerber's perspective

Getting treatment "every match" in Auckland (according to her own words).

She's probably taken more MTOs this year than Federer has taken in his entire 20 years or so career

No one said "broken shoulder", more fake news from the doubters....Andreescu claims a "stiff" shoulder, dating from last week.

That was the one MTO in the first set.

And do not fool yourself that Kerber had a problem with that, that's nonsense.

Nadal loves MTO, Serena loves MTO, so do MANY players.

Kerber wrapped her leg last night, for what?

Really, this is becoming the age of hypocrisy.

I like how Kerber "played possum" in the 2nd set last night.....more hypocrisy?

What did Kerber have a problem with then? Probably a combination of all the crap Andreescu pulled in the match

I mean, she's lost more than 300 matches in her WTA career and never made similar remarks about other players. So spare me the "oh, she's just a sore loser" shtick.

Nadal loves MTO, Serena loves MTO, so do MANY players.
None of these players have taken as many MTOs as Andreescu has this year. And when they do take them, they are inevitably criticized too

You can bet that with the spotlight on Andreescu, this type of gamesmanship she used to get away with will become more and more evident.

I obviously watched the highlights, and I wrote as much, but in these highlights she threw moon balls more than once or twice (I think that I counted around ten instances of such play only for the highlights), and several times it was absurd to watch.

No what’s absurd is making an assessment of a match by a few highlights. She won by bashing the ball and playing fearless tennis. Some of the moonballs actually hurt her, many times she lost the point when using that shot. In the 3 sets she hit very few moonballs and those shots had nothing to do with her victory.

"Probably"? You are just guessing, and you can be sure that Kerber had no problem with the Andreescu MTO, or "playing possum", which Kerber does herself,

and so does every other player...pure nonsense.

Kerber has reportedly shown a bad reaction to losses before, but not to the extent of this monstrosity. Possibly bi-polar? I don't know, but this is very strange

behaviour by Kerber.

These MTO's are directly related to injuries, like every other player, and don't think that Nadal or Serena haven't used many times MORE MTO's than

Andreescu...face reality.

If Kerber had any concerns about that, Kerber would have discussed this with Bianca in private.

My guess is that Kerber has already apologized to Bianca in private.

Sorry but it was a perfect example of being a poor loser. Gamesmanship ya right she kicked Kerber’s butt right off the court and it had nothing to do with a MTO. If an experienced player cannot handle their opponent taking a MTO then they aren’t much of a player. Kerber could not handle getting whooped by a high school kid twice in a week.

Yeah I'm guessing. Why do you think Kerber said this?

"Every other player does it" (even though that's not at all true) is not a legitimate defense for gamesmanship.

Right, an 18-year-old with barely any mileage on her body is more injured than veterans in their mid 30s with 1000+ career matches

I don't know if I am unlucky to communicate with only such people, or those following the WTA can't read, but I find it hard to believe that a text that I wrote twice is being completely ignored and something different than what I said is being discussed.

I will repeat it again and for the last time: I saw Andreesku play moonballs on more than one or two occasions as a tactic. Whether that is the way she played the entire match I cannot say as I didn't watch the match, but only the highlights, I have said as much and never pretended otherwise, so putting words in my mouth brings you nothing. What I stated is a fact that doesn't pretend to be anything else: it clearly is an intentional tactic, so firstly, it is something that her opponents have to find an answer to in the long run, and, secondly, a tactic always has to do with a victory if successful. She was unsuccessful only in the instances where Kerber moonballed her back. In all other instances Andreesku gained competitive advantage that (to her credit) she used very well.

Yes, it is a legitimate point, and it means that Andreescu's injury treatments are well within the norm for the sport, so it is nonsense to try and suggest that

Kerber was upset by it. No one has attacked Nadal or Serena to their face in this disgusting way.

Kerber owes an apology, and may have already made one to Andreescu.

Yes you didn’t watch the match which is obvious. But yet you say that Andreescu was only unsuccessful when Kerber moonballed her back and that in all other instances Andreescu gained the edge. Which is not true many times Kerber took those moonballs off the rise and took control of the point. So yes you did state that you only watched the highlights. Which is why your take on what really happened is definitely off.

Bianca schooled the post-2014 fake champion Kerber and showed how this game is played. What made Kerber mad was how Andreescu handled the pressure in a positive way and exploded back in the third. She quickly observed her mistakes and fixed them as well as adopting to Kerber's last resort tactic, attacking to her BH. All signs hint this teenager might be a genius and will win more slams than this weak era champ.

They're pro players, so they know that when they are scheduled for last on, there's always a possibility that it could start quite late. Not to mention the fact that the late start applied to both players. I'm not sure if you are making this comment to defend Kerber or justify what she said. I certainly hope that isn't the case, because clearly a later starting match is not a reason to make such a ****ty comment to your opponent.

This sounds like it was all Kerber and nothing Bianca did on the court warranted that kind of comment. I sincerely hope Kerber issues some sort of an apology, because that's just an incredibly disrespectful thing to say, and honestly, Kerber looks like the real drama queen starting for starting **** for no reason.

Not making excuses for her at all, just stating it was probably a contributing factor why she was in such a pissy mood. If you think that starting a match this late is OK in any way for professional athletes I don’t know what to tell you. It’s been a point of contention for a long time. Even if they play well and win, it effects the rest of the event. They have to stretch, shower, probably do a press conference, etc something, which gets them home around 4 or 5am.

You have to remember that this girl is 18 years old. Her first proper WTA tournament was in January.

So 2 months on the main tour and shes beat Kerber twice in a row so its no fluke, thats got to sting.

No one owes anyone any apology.

If Kerber doesnt like her, whats wrong with that, she doesnt need to like her.

And as for Andreescu, she has Kerber on toast, she should up the ante and say your time is up, theres a new generation coming for you.

So player's shortening points is a sine qua none of playing possum. And real injured or tiring players do what then? Your circular argument will lead back to the conclusion that everyone that shortens points is playing possum.

And do you really believe those coaching conversations at IW were a complete act and she was secretly winking at her coach while almost falling apart emotionally? Did you even see them? I'm pretty good at spotting liars and she would have to be academy award worthy to pull that off in the 3rd set of her first final. And for what? Not sure why posting an oversize picture of Kerber celebrating on the court does anything to help your case in defense of her...

Additionally, you are basically saying that Kerber was a sore loser having lost twice to this younger player in the last week, which is why she made that comment. Losing to the same player twice in a week doesn't justify saying something like that. Nadal lost twice to Federer back in 2017 in about a 2 week span, and he never said anything like that to Fed. Heck, he lost to Fed 4 times in 2017, including 3 finals (2 Masters 1000's and a Slam) and still he never made any sour grapes comments to Federer at the net.
He was just joking.

Kerber just salty asf that she lost to an 18-year old twice in the same week at Premier level events. And if we're gonna bring up the MTO, well first of all, every player in tennis history has called MTOs before so let's not fly off the rails there, and secondly, only that person knows how their body is feeling at that moment, so no one else should have the right to judge whether they're feeling sore or not, or whatever the case may be

Acting, showing deceitful behaviour, lying, misrepresenting the truth whatever. It’s still insinuating a bad character when you have absolutely no evidence to the contrary and do not know the person at all.

And I said she would have to be an academy award winning actress to behave the way she did with her coach at IW and for that to be fake. Since I believe she was speaking honestly with him, I don’t agree with you.

I think its the shame of social media where we can judge a human we’ve never met and accuse them of faking injuries and whatnot.
