Jannik will play the #4 seed Kamil Majchrzak (POL) in the final after the young Pole eliminated the #1 seed Lloyd Harris in two TBs in their SF match. Majchrzak is most noted for his unsuccessful attempt at knocking Nishikori out of AO’19, going up two sets before succumbing to some serious cramping issues. He won his first Challenger title five weeks ago on indoor HCs at Saint-Brieuc (FRA).

An interesting mini-tournament has been going at the Foro Italico in Rome since last Saturday, May 4, concerning the upcoming Italian Championships. According to the website sportface.it, it involves pre-qualifying for next week's tournament, with the winner of the men's singles event gaining a wildcard into either the qualifying draw or the actual main singles draw in Rome. Jannik Sinner is the no. 2 seed in the men's draw and has reached the semi-finals, where he will face fellow 17-year-old Lorenzo Musetti.

Yes, and it's a bit clearer now. The winner of the men's singles event at the special pre-qualifying tournament will definitely be awarded a wildcard into the main singles draw in Rome. However, if Andreas Seppi gains direct entry into the same main singles draw, then the runner-up in this special event will also be awarded a wildcard into the main singles draw for next week's tournament. Most of the players taking part in this special pre-qualifying tournament are, in fact, 23 or under. The semi-finals are scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday.

A long, close semi-final earlier today at the Foro Italico in Rome between Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti. The latter player took the first set on the tiebreak, 7-6(5), and reached match point on the Sinner serve at 5-4, 30-40, in the second set. However, Sinner won the next point and the game before breaking to lead 6-5. Another break of serve followed, resulting in another tiebreak in which Sinner led 3-0 only for Musetti to come back to lead 5-3. But Sinner went ahead again, 6-5 and then 7-6, before winning the next point and the second set, 7-6(6).
In the final set Sinner dropped serve in the first game but broke back straight away and held to 2-1. Leading 4-3 Sinner broke the Musetti serve again for 5-3. In the next game Sinner led 40-0, three match points, but was pulled back to deuce before steadying himself and completing a hard-earned victory, 6-7(5), 7-6(6), 6-3.
In the final set Sinner dropped serve in the first game but broke back straight away and held to 2-1. Leading 4-3 Sinner broke the Musetti serve again for 5-3. Jannik Sinner was beaten by Andrea Basso earlier today in the final round of pre-qualification for next week's Italian Championships. The score was 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3. Basso therefore gains a wildcard and entry to the main singles draw in Rome next week. However, it is possible that Sinner might still also be awarded a wildcard into the main draw. At the very least he will be taking part in the main qualifying event due to take place in Rome this coming weekend.

In that third set the American played well to lead 5-2, then 5-3, 40-30, match point on his own serve, but a brave shot from Sinner won the Italian the next point and when he won the next two points to pull back to 3-4, a buzz went round the stands on centre court. Justifiably so as the winning of that ninth game formed part of a run of five games in a row for the 17-year-old Italian who played some lovely, instinctive and forcefully confident tennis as he moved steadily towards victory.

Almost right. It was match game at 5-3 on Johnson’s serve. Sinner was never down double break in the third set, broken only once to give Johnson a 3-1 lead. The 2-5 game was on Sinner’s serve and he held.

Jannik was the only teen winner there today with both Kuhn and Popyrin suffering losses.
Lamasine did well to beat #2 seed Bublik, handling the big serve (15 aces) and power game, 6-2 2-6 7-5 in 1:35...not a lot of rallies apparently. I like Sinner’s chances though if he’s fresh. He played a bit longer (2:04) but closed with a breadstick.

On Saturday, against seasoned herbivore Lacko, his chances looked grim. And after blowing 3 consecutive set points in the first set breaker, then going down a break in the second, even grimmer. All of us sinnerholics were nevertheless impressed with Gianni's poise, considering he'd literally never stepped foot on a grass court until a few hours earlier. Great experience, we thought, as the Slovak went to serve for the match up a set and 5-4...
He'll get some more experience today in the final round of qualies.

Earlier today, in first-round action in Rosmalen, Jannik Sinner got off to a very good start in the first set of his match against the Chilean Nicolas Jarry. However, the 17-year-old was unable to maintain his early lead and eventually lost the set on a tiebreak. The second set was more one-sided as Jarry sealed a 7-6(4), 6-3 victory.
Jannik Sinner now heads to Germany where he has been offered a wildcard into qualifying for the singles event at next week's tournament in Halle.

A tough ask for Jannik Sinner in the qualifying event in Halle where he was drawn to play the no. 1 seed, Joao Sousa, in the first round earlier on Saturday. Although the Italian won the first set on a tiebreak, he was broken twice in the second set and once in the third as Sousa recorded a 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-4 victory. Sinner might do well to return to the Challenger tour where he can avoid losses in the early rounds and thereby continue his impressive rise up the rankings.
