Best 18x20 rackets for control?

Have been playing with 16x19 almost exclusively, currently play the DR98 and like it a lot but I want to try something for those days when my forehand is misfiring and I just need a lot of control on my shots and I can win. So I want to try an 18x20 and the main thing I want is more control. Comfort is a plus obviously and ideally something that is a 98in or 100in headsize.
I'm looking at the microgel as a cheap option but would this fit the mould for what I want?

Been thinking the same thing!
Not tried any but some options seem to be:
Wilson Blade,
Original Pure Strike,
Head Microgel,
Head Liquidmetal,
Head Gravity Pro,
Head Speed Pro,
Prince 100p,
Prince Phantom 100,
New upcoming Yonex Vcore Pro,
Wilson Ultra Tour.

MicroGel Radical MP is a good choice if you know how to mod your frames. To me, the best control frames are:

Prestige MP (*preferably the IG Prestige MP if you like the feel)
TFight 315 LTD 18x20 (*needs modification)
Phantom Pro 18x20
Phantom Pro 93P (*don’t let the headsize be a deciding factor. I highly recommend demoing this frame)

Good luck!

Do you rate it very high for control?

Yes, it is. It actually is a great frame. I’ve heard the original plays incredibly plush. The new reissue I heard feels a bit more brassy compared to the original, but in my experience, it felt nice and connected. For the price, I don’t think you can find a better racket, except you’d have to know your preferred specs and know how to mod frames.

I find the Ultra Tour is an easy transition from the DR98, and the control and comfort is terrific. The only thing I struggle with is generating a powerful serve. Looking forward to demo'ing some of the new 18 x 20 racquets coming out. The Yonex and Wilson Blade are high on my list.

Played the blade 2015, phantom pro, original pure strike, and 100 tour Textreme. The closest to the blade was the 100 tour Textreme.

ultra tour 97 is the best control oriented frame i have used ... you will trade power on off-center hits when you leave the DR98. blade or a speed might be a good compromise

DR98 is about as tight of a 16x19 pattern for that size of racket that you can get. With that being said, the Ultra97 is a good compromise but you'll surely miss the power a bit.

Just to pry a bit, what is causing the mis-fire? Is your DR98 leaded up/customized at all? Just some good tweaks to the racket may end up curing your current predicament.

I would strongly recommend adding lead to the ultra tour. That will help with some of the power.
I agree. First I tried my Ultra Tour in stock condition that felt way too anemic but after I customized to 350 grams and 32,5cm balance with lead and a leather grip I was able to hit powerful serves.

Thanks picked up a couple of them on a great deal. Love my DR but this will be great for days I'm just not quite accurate enough

WUT sounds like the hands down winner then! Not too worried about a lack of power it's not something I struggle to generate, accuracy is my big issue!

Been looking for a new racket for the past ~20 months, and for some reason, I keep coming back to the MG Radical MPs. Can't believe a matched pair is the same cost as one new racket. This is my story...

My wrist was in a lot of pain when I sought the comfort of the mg radical. Initially, I don't know what came over me for I had an intense dislike of Head rackets as a junior and thought 18x20 was a waste of extra synthetic gut. You could squeeze out an extra string job with the amount of string saved, so thought went. But one summer night, as my wrist was under an ice pack, I ordered a pair of the ugly, orange rackets using my non-dominant hand. You know, the one that holds the racket and doesn't do much else. As summer changed into fall, I found out that the racket can take lead very well. On a whim, I even tried capping it for fun.

Unfortunately for the mg radical, I couldn't stay faithful. During the winter season, an Ultra Tour snuck in, got traded on the forum and came back for another round only to be back in the bag. The PK Redondo I got initially for the pain was underwhelming. Even hooked up with a PT630 that had been around the block several times. Between the rides on the racket carousel, the mg radical was always there for me. More lead, less lead. Move the balance a few cm here and there. Cap it, uncap it.

Now I find out that the Head Tennis Sensor doesn't fit in the buttcaps of the MG line, so a younger Graphene Touch Prestige has made its way into my bag.

What I've come to realize is that the only thing I cannot stand is the paint job. I'm starting to think that the ride would have ended if it came in a simple, mostly monochrome paint job. Don't care if its glossy or matte, just cannot bring myself to commit.

I know this sounds stupid, but it has come down to either sanding the pair down or finding a tennis racket customization shop to repaint it. If anyone knows of a place that can do that, let me know. Please. I can't spend any more money on murses.

Yeah they sell them new in the UK a double pack here for £144 including 12 balls! Essentially £65 each as balls cost about £1 a ball here. So about $80 in US money. I've picked a couple up on the basis even if I hate them their value won't go down much from there on the second hand site, so can sell. May get a WUT in future but Wilson seems super expensive here in Europe compared with Head assumedly as Head is a European company.

The 93P is awesome for control, and is the racquet I transitioned to from the DR98.

Now, it is quite an adjustment going from a 98 sq.in. 16x19 310g tweener to a 93 sq.in. 18x20 330g classic player's racquet. It worked well for me, as I could never really gel with the DR98 (as good as it was), but might not work for everyone, especially if one has very whippy strokes.

The Blade 99 Team doesnt have an 18x20 but has a 16x18. Yet it is very dense in the middle and something like that might be a good middle ground. Said another way some 18x20s can be more open than some 16x19s, etc. Its rare but do look at the density of the middle strings for control.

93p. Point and shoot. I know it’s not the head size you want though. Also, make sure you can generate enough of your own power though. Once you get the hang of it, you can swing out and ‘everything’ should stay in. The 14x18 is a little erratic, skip it. And the 100p is a little clunky for me but they don’t have a 18x20; albeit, I haven’t given it enough time to truly give it a go. It’s more of a first impression.

18x20 is Head department (at least it was)...go for some older generations, like the Microgel Radical or Prestige Mid Plus, Youtek Radical MP, IG Radical MP, IG Prestige MP. If you could find some rarities like the Pro Tour 630 or Radical Tour it will be even better!

i've debated doing a couple of my PA's to look like Rafa's prototype version from ~ 2016 Monte Carlo. i'm sure its expensive and not worth it imo.

i think there is a thread buried deep about someone using them.

Exactly. The thing is not the amount of strings. It is the string spacing.

Out playing today with my 93P 18x20. Still the best racket in my bag for control and feel. I smile every time I hit a FH with that thing. Sure it requires a little more focus but isn't that something we should be working on anyway?

Can't recall walking off the court disappointed I pulled that frame out of the bag. Even if i don't win i love using the 93p so much because it just feels like an extension of my arm.

It's funny but I think I started an identically named thread 2 years ago! And had the same question as you having played with the DR98 for a while. Over the next 2 years and till today I've tried about 50 (?) different rackets and feel that the following match your criteria of control and comfort. Some of them might not be 18x20 but offer 18x20 levels of precision.

2015 Blade 98 18x20
IG Rad MP and Pro
MG Rad Pro
H22 18x20
G360 Speed MP (lacking in comfort a bit compared to others)

Prestige MP (I play the IG and have played the YT which is a bit rougher on the arm). You could also try the 90s at 16x19 too. KPS88 and K90 have 16x19 but in a smaller head.

MicroGel has done the job, not going to replace my DRs but the perfect option on a day I just need absolute precision. I may just match it with the weight and balance with the DR98s for ease of use.

93P. I'm only about a 4.5 and I can still hit all my spots. When I used a MP frame, the control wasn't as easy. You're also going to lose power unless you have mega RHS.

I went from a Mid to a MP and had control issues on the backhand. What I wound up doing was using a looser wrist and hitting with more topspin to keep the ball in the court. It still doesn't feel as good as it did with a mid though. But the benefits on the forehand outweigh the losses on the backhand.

I’m finding the exact same thing when testing lower powered frames. They give the confidence to use a full follow through on the backhand, but when switching back to a frame with a little more power it feels like the ball leaves the string too quickly and I end up abbreviating the follow through.

The best compromise that I've found is put a little more topspin on it.
