Move her side to side for 2-3 shots.

Do people not drop shot serena because its rude? I dont think she would be able to stop and would hit the net every time

I've been saying drop shot or short slice Serena for 2 years. She can't volley, is inconsistent on the mid court balls because her footwork is so poor, and once she gets her speed going... trying to slam on the brakes is like a speeding locomotive on greased tracks. Yet, time after time, for the most part, mug opponents will be content trying to hit down the middle, and pray Serena has an off day.

Politics have always been a part of sports. From who plays, sponsors, who does not play and on and on. Sharapova is not a victim. No one forced Sharapova make the decisons which led to her being busted and punished.

Almost everyone here and elsewhere talks about how far away Serena is from her prime now and that Sharapova just has to play well.

But isn’t Sharapova much farther away from her own best? It’s a neutral question, I don’t want a controversial discussion about the reasons here.

Serena is a huge favourite IMO. Not for the tournament, but for this match.

The world knows who abuses illegal PEDs (and curse out umpires and fans, cheated with the aid of her father, etc.) and her name is Maria Sharapova. However, if she is PED free, it will be a comment on her skill if she wins that match.

Serena tested positive after a french open final victory. She was granted a TUE 7 days later.

Tennis lost a ton of intergrity when that came out, she is still tied with steffi imo. If you even put her on the list

At this point in both of there careers, I feel there is nothing that Maria can really do to beat Serena, as her movement has never been the best. Traditionally, players like Kerber and Halep, who move well and are able to move Serena (rather than outhitting her have been able to beat her). She can match Serena for power, but the H2H really speaks for itself, with so many consecutive defeats (with many being one-sided affairs). I just hope she can try and make it close, and possibly get a set a least, and take advantage of Serena's slow starts. Its R1 so Serena could be a bit sluggish, which will make for an interesting encounter.

Don’t recall Sharapova ever threatening a line judge, abusing umpires anywhere near as bad as Williams. And on the PED front, if Williams was Russian she would have been caught a long time ago.

You keep on believing whatever fantasy you choose o. Sharapova is the one who stammered through lies about the reasons she was using the illegal PEDs and when she knew about its ban. But hey, if you want to live in fantasyland, its your choice, kid.

Sharapova’s only real chance at victory is if Serena has an injury that prevents her from both serving and hitting the ball.

Id say its a toss up, either one could play really good or really bad.

I feel bad for the chair, if he enforces the rules he maybe banned from work in the future.

How do PEDs or steroids could help Sharapova to put more spin on her strokes, make her service technique better, help to overcome her permanent choking or at least have plan B, I wonder.

Same here. Almost forgot Sharapova was still playing. After the headline of this 1st round, I realize she's still competing. Her name is back in the news.

Rigged to get Maria some attention.
