I couldn't believe the crowd was booing an umpire and he was simply doing his job! o_O Has this ever happened before, during the trophy presentation ceremony?

Rafa Nadal is without question the most popular player in New York!

Why did the boo the umpire?

Because he gave some time violations to Nadal. Please note that those violations were based on the shot clock running out, so the umpire really had no choice but to issue the violations. FOr doing that, he was booed during the match when the violations were issued but shokingly, during the trophy presentation as well

The New York crowd is head over heels for Rafa. He can pretty much do anything he likes there and the crowd will still support him.

Rafa fans know no boundaries of respect or dignity.

I agree. But Most fan groups are like that.

The New York crowd loves Rafa like anything and I don't know why. There's no player that's more popular there. Booing the umpire just drove the point home. Another depressing fact for Federer lovers :)

Not just that but he also made some bad calls against Medvev that the fans booed.

Ridiculous. And umpire was being soft with Nadal, didn't even warned him for the same amount of times he BROKE the rules.

But this match showed this to the whole tennis world: Nadal can and will always triumph the rules. Doesn't matter what the book says, he does whatever he wants. From robbing a couple of fair aces to deliberately delay the match.

When someone has done as much for the sport of tennis as Nadal has, I can live with some of his tactics. This applies to Federer and Djokovic as well. If I wanted morality and that kind of stuff, I'd be watching sermons, sorry! :)

Breaking the rules is not a tactic by any mean. It's an offense and should be punished, simple as that.

August ... I'm prepared to overlook their faults in favor of the good they've done for the sport. You see it differently and I don't have a problem. As they say .... different strokes for different folks!

Wasn't the crowd clapping and making noise at the time a time violation was issued to Nadal? As in Super Bowl, World Series or Championship at US Open....I don't like when umpires, coaches, etc...influence the result of these games...let the players play and don't make questionable calls that people will revert back to as the cause for a loss. I don't care if Nadal or any other player takes 5 seconds longer for a serve - in the 5th set of US Open. I don't care for time violations at that juncture of the match......these guys are out there 5 hours and giving all they have...the chair umpire needs to stay out of it at that point unless it's an egregious violation

Shows the majority of crowd intelligence level not to boo the Dumpire for stopping Nadals trolling Meds.
Nadal needs to make sure he gets into the mind of an opponent even if its his friend for there
is no way he wants to lose ever no matter what. That's the problem most braindeads don't see.
Meds didn't try to bother Nadal at all while serving or receiving, he just played his game.

Supporting the underdog is not NYs character, they prefer to support the propaganda its safe
to get a win that way but it didnt happen vs Andreescu which was the best part of the event.

Disgusting? What the hell are you talking about! I was on the edge of my seat all the way through!

He may have lost but Medvedev is the real deal!

All of the Big Three seem to get away with it but this year the fans were more vocal about it which makes things different now.

Breaking the rules in any kind of sport isn't only a "fault". It's a total lack of respect to the game, to the opponent and to the spectators. This is not a matter of opinion.

Atherton ... I agree but the Umpire had no choice. The shot clock ran out! He's obligated to issue the violation.

The fans have the right to cheer or boo they pay a lot of money to see these guys as long as they are not vulgar or making threats it is their right. I don't like Rafa using crowd noise to excuse himself or delay the guy on serve. He is world class tennis player who has been trained to stay mentally focused in different environments. Doing that **** is gameship and that should be a violation.

The shot clock runs out on many players in matches...no violations are called. I don't think any time violations need to be called in the 5th set of the US Open when these guys are busting their butts for 5 hours out there. This is the final of the US Open for goodness sake...the umpire needs to let the players play and not influence the outcome of the match. Outrageous. He deserved all the boos he got. The only thing I think was horrendous was that Nadal said he wasn't ready when Medvedev made an ace....that was clear gamesmanship and shouldn't have been allowed.

Belt ... That comment was uncalled for, bordering on racism and I'm sorry but I won't go there. I can get passionate about my favorite players but I'm not going to make comments like that about a certain demographic.

Sure the fans have the right to boo or cheer.....no question about that. But the time clock needs to start when the crowd quiets down. The players need there to be no interruptions with noise when they are playing.

he was obviously a fed fan. thats why he called him on it in the first game. what a joke. just glad rafa kept his cool because i sure didn't!!! LOL

Rafa ... for the 4th time, there is a shot clock and if it runs out, the umpire is obliged to issue a violation!

If I'm wrong about this, I'll be happy to be corrected by you or someone who can provide clarification about the rule.

Why are the umpires obliged to issue a time violation in the 5th set of the US Open Final....when they very rarely do so in almost every match I've witnessed throughout the year? Why do they select the 5th set of US Open Final to finally enforce the time rule?

I think Federer and Nadal are the most popular players at all the grand slam events...however, if Fed plays Nadal...he will always have more people rooting for him than for Nadal.

Rules are meant to be followed in every point and match. And this was enforced because, as you may have saw in the match, Nadal is a serial offender.

It's the 5th set of a 5 hour match, they should let a lot go. It's the ump's job to not make himself/herself the center of attention. Ump clearly wanted to win some fans (anti Rafa people such as yourself)
Nope, they shouldn't.

Letting a single second go is a direct benefit too Nadal. This is bending the rules and favoring someone directly.

After Roger.

That's a narrative the Federer fans want us to believe but I don't see the evidence for it. Sorry! This match was proof enough for me.

And note, I've been defending that umpire!

Because of the shot clock. The umpire is obliged. At least that's how I understand it but will be glad to be corrected, if wrong.

Why don't they feel obliged to abide by shot clock in all matches throughout the year? That is my question? Why, all of a sudden, do they feel obliged to enforce the shot clock and give time violations in the 5th set of the US Open Final - after these guys are running around for 5 hours? The crowd was noisy....and they clock should start after the crowd quiets down. No interruptions from the crowd when they play......I don't care who is playing the finals of a tournament....I don't want a chair umpire influencing the result of the match cause a player took an extra 5 or 10 seconds....please realize these guys are out there for 5 hours.....some of the points were 25+ shots.....give them some leeway and let the chips fall where they may. I don't want an umpire's call to cause a player to lose a match that is going on for 5 hours...that isn't right.

Would an umpire call time violation on Fed if it were championship point in the 5th set of a 5 hour match and Fed winds up losing cause of that? I think there would be a tremendous uproar.
