Medvedev- Facing Djokovic is easier than Nadal

Djokovic wasn't at his best in their MC match, but he wasn't terrible. They were playing 30+ shot rallies during 2 hours, just like in their AO match. Terrible is what Nadal was in MC semifinal, when he was missing like every third shot.

He lost his form last year after AO and struggled for 3 tournaments before regaining it in Madrid. It's not like he played well in MC and still lost against a counterpunching Medvedev. In Cincy, he played well and still lost which is the difference.

Talk about leaving out one HUGE part of the statement. It's more difficult for a guy with HIS TYPE OF GAME. He is essentially just confirming the fact that a huge part of tennis is about how your own game matches up against that of your opponent.

Djokovic's form in IW, Miami and MC was terrible though and he also lost to Kohlshreiber and Agut.
Bautista Agut is not the same as Kohlsreiber, he is a much better player. Bautista Agut is a solid top 10, Kohlsreiber is a 36 years old pre-retired player. So losing to Bautista Agut in Masters 1000 matches is not an indicative of bad form from Novak.

Bautista Agut has defeated Djokovic in 2016 and 2019 twice. He beat a well-playing Novak in the Doha 2019 final, which was played just before the AO. And he beat also a focused Djokovic in Miami 2019. That loss wad unsurprising, given the fact that Bautista Agut also defeated Novak in Doha previously.

Against Kohlsreiber in IW 2019 I admit that Djokovic looked a bit distracted, I think he may have been distracted because of the issue of not contacting Fedal as the president of the players comitee. But I watched the Miami 2019 match, and Djokovic was 100% focused and fighting with all his spirit and body. He just lost because Baustista Agut made an excellent match. Period. No need for excuses. Just like Nadal lost to Goffin in the ATP cup simply because Goffin is a solid player that played fantastic.

Agut did not beat a well playing Djokovic in Doha SF or a focused one in Miami. What matches were you watching exactly? Djokovic was listless in Doha, his footwork was a mess, he was standing 10 feet behind the baseline in all his matches and just not playing his best. You can even find posts where I have said this and how he needed to improve to win AO. Thankfully, he did. Both Fuscovics and Basil gave him all he could handle in Doha, and he played a solid first set and a half against Agut, nothing spectacular since Agut wasn't doing much to hurt him, but then his game completely fell apart and he lost in 3. That's not the definition of a well playing Djokovic.

Then in Miami, after struggling against Tomic and Delbonis, he did the same exact thing in the match with Agut all over again. If someone beats Djokovic playing close to his best, I will say so but clearly that wasn't it.

Excuses. Bautista Agut is a solid top 10 that has defeated multiple times Djokovic, so there is nothing surprising on it. Djokovic was playing well, Bautista Agut played even better. You don't need excuses, just like I don't put any excuse that Nadal lost to a solid top 11 like Goffin in the ATP Cup. The rival also plays, and if he is on fire, your favorite loses.

Ok. Goffin beat a well playing Nadal the other day and Demon almost beat a well playing Nadal yesterday. Let's see if you can qualify that. There is no excuses since a loss is a loss, and the opponent who is better on the day wins, but saying Djokovic lost those Agut matches last year while playing well is nonsense.

Bautista Agut is a pusher like Gilles Simon. Nobody ever looks good against these types of players. Even Federer had all sorts of trouble with pushers like Simon and Guillermo Canas.

Nadal arrived into Sydney with no time to rest. Still jetlag and all. And the heat killed him.

I didn't see either match so I cannot say if he played well or not, but most Nadal fans said he played terrible yesterday, so I was being sarcastic. Also, it was just a four hour flight.

Djokovic was complaining about jetlag and he had only a 1 hour flight you know.

I need to see a quote to believe this. Lol. Even I would have to chuckle at Djokovic if he said that. Nadal had a day off in between matches on Wed to Friday so transferring from Perth to Sydney shouldn't have bothered him too much.

I remember him saying something in his on-court interview after the Shapo match. I don't have a quote or vid on hand right now though.

I travel often back and forth from LA to Detroit. Similar 4 hour 10 min flight time with 3 hour time difference (exactly the same as Perth to Sydney actually). Jetlag is absolutely real and hits hard. That isn't an excuse.

Nadal played Wednesday morning so at the latest he should have arrived in Sydney Wednesday night. That means he had all day Thursday to recover and he played Friday evening. He should have been good. If he had to do a quick turnaround like that on the next day, then yea he would have been spent.

No, it is not that simple. There are three different time zones in Australia and recovering from jet lag depends on number of time zones crossed while traveling. While there is no exact set time, rule of thumb for the body recovering is one or two time zones per day. Team Spain arrived after midnight on Thursday.

That and as I stated from personal experience, takes me minimum two days to get my bearings back for very similar type of travel. Has more to do with traveling eastward as you don't feel it that much in any other direction.

Medvedev was in the exact same situation as Nadal, and he complained of jetlag immediately after his match.

My bad, it was Medvedev who complained of jetlag who also came from Perth though.

Yea Medvedev pretty much got screwed because their flight got diverted to Melbourne because of weather and they had to stay the night there, and then he had to travel to Sydney the next day. He really had no chance to rest before their tie with Argentina.

I didn't know that. But Melbourne is the same time zone as Sydney, and that's only a 1 hour flight.

Also there were 2 days between his matches, same as Nadal.

It usually takes me a day to recover from a flight of 4 or 5 hours and a 3 hour time zone difference. I'm not a professional athlete though so I can't speak for what Nadal was feeling. In his comments he said it was a number of factors like the change in weather, the humidity and the jet lag. Not saying he wasn't feeling the effects of the trip but at least he wasn't in the position Medvedev was in.

But still, he wasn't in the location where the matches would be taking place, he had less rest and he had less time to get used to the weather.

You must be super human for sure. Have family in Vancouver and my girlfriend lives in Toronto. Have made the trip back and forth many many times. Its 4 hours and 20 mins roughly, same 3 hour difference under discussion here. Flying from Vancouver towards anywhere in Canada is always brutal but especially when all the way east to Ontario. Everyone I know takes atleast 2-3 days to get rid of their jetlags. Can only imagine traveling to Newfoundland. Im definitely not a pro athlete but don't think jet lag discriminates.

When I was younger it took me longer to adjust but not now but maybe because I've done it quite a few times from coast to coast in the US. I grew up less than an hour from the Atlantic ocean so anytime I went to the Pacific time zone, it was 3 hours. Usually, a difference in 4 time zones would take the average person 2 days to recover but everybody is different.

I travel so much over the globe from one end to another that I adapt after a day even with a 10 hour time change.

Well no I'm not that good. Lol. I would probably be wrecked for a few days. You travel a lot though and to me, the more I traveled the more I got used to it so I totally see where you are coming from.

That is pretty much it. The more you travel the quicker it is to adjust. The first trick is to make sure you eat at the correct times according to the time zone you are in, in relation to how you would normally be eating. So if you eat, lets say at 4 in the afternoon, then you eat 4 in the afternoon at the place you arrive. The idea is to make your internal systems see the changes, so they adapt quicker.

True. Also, try to get up early that next morning on the first day after you arrive even if it's hard to do. That's how to break your cycle quickly and readjust to the new schedule. Set your alarm, get up early, have coffee, eat a little something and start your day.

Absolutely. This is where eating at the time you would normally eat is essential, if you follow that, you will have no choice but to get up early if you head east. If you head west, even if you get up earlier, you don't eat until it is correct time locally in relation to when you do.

Yea. Traveling west of course is easier since you are gaining time. It's when you lose time that your body kind of gets out of wack. Change of time is weird though. Like when daylight savings time changes, I always hate it when I lose an hour, because I do feel it. However, if I travel back home, which is only 1 time zone difference and a 2 hour flight, I feel no difference in either direction. Lol.
