Well Rublev couln't play ATP cup could he. I'm quite surprised to see you hang on to ELO so tightly

I just don't think Shapo's highs make up much for how terrible his lows are. If they did I think he would've had more tournament wins and better results against top 10 players. I don't think a players quality is determined by his hottest 3 game stretches. And I'm saying I don't think his past 12 months are worthy of top 15. Not that he won't get top 10 or higher in the future.

Honestly surprised how much this keeps happening given the results of the 90's generations in the past 10 years. But really far be it to dissuade people from enjoying somebodies tennis, but I don't understand why enjoying a players tennis must go hand in hand with super high expectations.

Meh, I had him down to not get past both Sinner and Dimi and I'm disappointed we won't get to see him play either.

But that's not why you waded in. You said he's not good enough to be ranked where he is because in the last year his record is:

Final in Paris Masters (if that doesn't count, then neither does Nadal's USO where he also got a walkover and defeated fewer top 20 players)
Spearheading Canada to Davis Cup final
Won Stockholm 250
Semis in Miami Masters (wins over Evan, Rublev, Tsitsipas and Tiafoe)
Semis and Winston-Salem 250
Plus a few others decent wins

Or is it because you just hate anyone with flair?

You pick. Apparently beating dudes like Tiafoe is part of an argument for being a top player. Yet Nadal doesn't get credit for beating Medvedev in a Slam final.

It's all cherry picking really. But burn the heretic for not ignoring the bad patches and matches.

But nah I just hate everyone with flair. It's all I have in my life.

the problem with this forum is that Shapo gets praised and hyped to no end after losing to an average Djokovic because “this time he pushed him!” yet Nadal gets memed and criticized to no end because he’s won a slam SF easier than he should have.

@Red Rick it looks like you a very young. Teenagers like you think that Federer was a goat since he was born.
He was a perfect player when he was a baby boy.
You don't remember when Federer was is Shapo edge he was very unstable like a current Shapo.
In contrast Lleyton Hewitt was vary stable. At age 20 Hewitt was number 1, and Federer was just number 13, similar to Shapo today.

Well, I was watching Fed ever since 1998 when he was 17. Admittedly, I couldn't watch many of his matches because they weren't televised but I followed him assiduously. He was never "unstable," rarely complained as Denis does or had meltdowns on court in 2001-2002 when he was 20. You're simply mistaken. In one match yesterday, Denis threw his racket more than Fed has in his entire professional career and that's a fact. Fed was "unstable" as a child player and up to the age of 14 when he was sent to Geneva. When Federer was Denis' age, he was anything but unstable in his on court demeanor. It's a ludicrous and invented statement. You will have nothing to offer as proof since it doesn't exist, either Youtube videos from 2000-2001 or archived print media.

Think a lot of his misbehavior is overstated simply to add to the story tbh. I got all hyped up for mad man 18 year old Fed but he barely smashed a dent into a racket.

Geez, why does it the discussion come back to Fed?

Shapo is not a "Young Fed". He's still going to be pretty awesome to watch and I'm hopeful he'll improve to the point where he's contending for majors, but he's not Fed.

In his post-match interview he gave credit to Marton and said he didn't play well and was dealing with excessive anxiety which has happened before.

Hindsight, but it's a pretty rough opening round to draw Fucsovics, probably one of the better unseeded players. Bookies gave him a 79% winning rate at the start of the match, commented that I thought that was pretty generous. Marton is a smart cookie with his disciplined shot selection and margin, a streaky player like Shapo can definitely beat themselves against a steady sort of player.

It’s a bit strange though that he felt more anxiety than the others out in court yesterday, same conditions for them all. So it’s something within himself me thinks. But he can learn from this, and comeback stronger! Cmon Shapo, you can do this!
He has been in a good flow, and a setback again. Has to keep moving.

Anxiety is a condition. Esp. if it's persistent. And, there is nothing strange about it. Good on him for being open and honest about this. He says it's happened before.

He was just real moody when he wasn't playing well. In this match alone, Fed throws his racquet eight times and finally smacks a ball into the stadium after losing match point on a forehand error. No huge racquet smashes or anything like that.

Next tournament for Shapovalov is Montpellier, where he's the 3rd seed.

Funnily enough, he might have the exact same draw there as he had in New Zealand just a few weeks ago - Bye in the 1st round, possible meeting with Pospisil in the second round, and then Ugo Humbert in the QF!

Lets hope he raises his level back to what it was at the ATP cup, instead of what it was in NZ and the AO....

Shapo has been seeded no. 3 at this coming week's tournament in Montpellier, France. He is one of three Canadians in the singles event, all of whom find themselves in the lower half of the draw. As in Auckland, Shapo could face Vasek Pospisil in the second round and Ugo Humbert in the quarter-finals. He can't face his good friend Felix, the no. 5 seed, before the semi-finals.

Shapo and Felix have teamed up for the doubles event in Montpellier. Unseeded, they have been drawn against Horia Tecau and Jean-Julien Rojer, the no. 2 seeds, in the first round.

It will be Shapo vs Vasek again in second-round singles action at the Open Sud de France after Vasek beat Aljaz Bedene earlier today, 6-3, 6-4.

Horrible lack of effort from D today. Lost in straight sets to Pospisil. Kept losing his serve. As horrible as his play in the Aussie Open. He's been poor in his last 3 tournaments so he needs to get it together fast.
