goran is my all-time favourite player. so charismatic. he could win against anyone and lose against anyone depending on his mood... too much fun to watch.
safin is the one who comes closest to this right now. even their playing style is similar: 2HBH, very powerful serve, same racquet too. i wouldn't be surprised if safin continued losing for a year or two, then won a slam before retiring. i'll still watch as many safin matches as possible in the meantime. i'll take him over murray or half the top 10 rated players every day of the week.
bottom line: goran-style players, whether good, bad, or crazy are a blast.

Thats just it isn't it, he could beat anyone and lose to anyone depending on which Goran turned up, amazing to watch. That and the whole story, the rise, the fall, the redemption

goran played agassi 7 times and lost 4 times.
those times he lost he was playing against himself more than he was his opponents. safin is the same, only crazier. such behaviour will never earn a player more than a couple grand slams, if that. such a player will never be the G.O.A.T. but they make the game INTERESTING. w/o serve and volley the game is getting repetitive and boring. we need more of these guys!

Its true that a player like that could never win everything or be the top player of the era but you're right, at least it was interesting and he played with his soul. I like to watch Safin for the same reason

i agree also. its one thing to lose. its another to crush someone. but it means so much more when you dig deep to earn a victory (i.e Emergency Goron!)

I was a bit young to watch Goran playing...and at that time all I knew were Sampras and Agassi. But from all the quotes that have been mentioned, my favourite Goran is "PRESS CONFERENCE GORAN"!!!

Agreed, I only saw him once at Wimbledon, was just something special, not as amazing to watch in terms of sheer excellence as say Sampras but probably the most entertaining by a long shot, just the drama...
