Nadal uses a hybrid

I sent email to Tennis mag today regarding their hybrid article. See their responses in bold and mine in italics. The responder's name and email address have been deleted.

Read bottom up.

They are just posters on a message board, I would not place much credibility on them, but they appear so certain.

Thanks a lot,

Suresh

Looking for some angry responses. None so far. I hope it doesn't mean that the credibility level is low for real ....

You're just looking to start some trouble, aren't you? Fede, who strung Nadal's racquet in Rome, confirmed that Nadal still uses Babolat Duralast for the whole stringbed. No hybrid.

Yeah exactly. Tennis Magazine. The same magazine that "swears" that Federer actually uses a Wilson K Factor, that Agassi used a Head Liquidmetal Radical, Flexpoint Radical, that Roddick actually uses a Pure Drive Roddick Cortex and that Nadal uses an Aeropro Drive Cortex. Riiiiight. These guys are taking us for fools and must think we're stupid enough to believe them. Just look at Nadal racket during the match, he clearly uses one brand of string on mains and crosses. Duralast. As for Roddick you can see the hybrid, Pro Hurricane and VS Gut. Tennis Magazine are just trying to cover their tracks and not admit their mistake.

nadal uses pro hurricane tour across the whoel string bed

Man, there was a hopeless thread on this just a couple of days ago. He uses Babolat Duralast 15g at 55lbs. But since Duralast is very difficult to find, they say Pro Hurricane since they are mass produced and are similar to Duralast.

Tennis magazine has really gone downhill lately. To give one example, in an attempt at a smear, Tennis magazine said that Mel Gibson is Australian. And of course, it continues to display its ignorance over the difference between a major and a grand slam.

I don't even read Tennis Magazine anymore, too many ads and not enough stuff on TENNIS. You should go to Barnes & Nobles to get the Australian Tennis magazine or the British one. They have better articles, more pages on tennis, more pics and less ads.

I just checked out the June 2007 issue. On page 30, there's a snotty comment about the fall of Communism, the implication being that if the Communists still ran Romania, Ion Tiriac would be less wealthy, but everyone else would be a lot happier.

If Tennis magazine has any aspirations to being anything more than a slightly less degraded version of the new Tennis Week magazine, it should start by firing the red diaper baby who puts together the "The Tennis 10" section.

Hey Morrisey, i had recently JCS verify that guys like Davydenko, and Nalbandian uses extended rackets that were just cut longer during manufacturing process, nothing special. Why can't the mfg do this simple process for the public that wants it if we are able to pay them extra ?? I just don't get it. I recently asked prince to cut the O3 white little longer like 0.5 inches and they would not even discuss it. I even offered to pay whatever they wanted to charge.

Agree with about their being to many ads, and not enough substance...

dont you think the hybrid article was about a year and a half to late anyway...?

Greg Raven and other stringers, please do not misunderstand that I am doubting you. I wanted to provoke some responses and took a Fox "News" approach. I think it is very important to know if the world #2 uses a hybrid or not. The person from Tennis mag who responded to me seemed knowledgeable and in fact, coincidentally during the Hamburg coverage on TTC last nite, he was interviewed for a clip about Justine and the FO. I don't want to reveal his name (from the email, I am guessing it is the same person), but he should not be identified with other aspects of Tennis mag. Remember that Chrissie is the editor and no one says she doesn't know tennis.

BTW, isn't Gibson Australian or is that a joke I didn't get?

Even the articles are crap. Tennis in Hollywood? Who the h-e-double-hockey-sticks cares about stars hacking on court? I don't. Their coverage of league tennis is sending the wrong messages as well. So far they've glorified a writer who wanted to "take it outside" and a captain that symbolizes everything that's wrong with league tennis.

Gibert's short column about junior development makes me gag. Apparantly 99% of our USTA dues should all be funneled to a select group of kids having their childhood stolen in the IMG academy of his choosing so that we can all feel good about US tennis and never again have to feel the shame of having no US men get past the third round of Wimbledon. Because we all know having no men past the third round of Wimbledon in '06 had a huge impact on the development of every junior tennis player in the US.

As for the hybrid article in particular, not only is it at least a year late but it reeks of shilling, just like all of their other equipment "reviews". Remember last year when they regurgitated the industry line that our racquets are worn out after a year or two of play and need to be replaced, then proceeded to showcase racquets for aging hackers (all with $200+ price tags)? I'm sure all of the guys hacking away in the bottom of the senior leagues will need to replace their DNX1's after a year or two, given how they murder the ball and pop strings weekly...

Tennis mag may have a lot of fluff and commercial jingles and personally, I can't stand the Bodo guy, but this topic is about what Roman Prokes told them about everyone using hybrids at TMC 06 and what a person from the magazine told me over email personally. Let us not confuse the issues.

Dude, Roman Prokes is straight up wrong on this issue. Both Blake and Nadal were at TMC, and they both use full poly. This has been documented by tournament stringers for a long time. Keep in mind, TENNIS magazine also wants you to believe that Nadal has switched to the APD Cortex and that Fed is really using the K90. Many players use hybrids, but not all. I wish TENNIS would just own up to their mistake.

I sent Roman email but never heard back.

Re: the other observations, the mag is just propogating advertisor info. Can you really expect them to say Federer does not use the K90 and get sued by Wilson, and of course lose their ads?

I would not combine these issues. I don't think the mag is profiting by its claim about hybrid strings.

Also, no one here can agree whether Nadal uses Hurricane Tour or Duralast. From an unbiased viewpoint, what would one conclude about their claims to talk about Nadal's strings?

My point was not to combine issues, my point was that TENNIS magazine has misinformation a lot. I would trust tournament stringers (who physically touch and string these racquets) before I would trust Roman Prokes, who at the end of the day is in the racquet business and wants people to spend the most money. VS and Luxilon fits that bill.

I don't know that I agree. Prokes is in the racket business, but he's got a whole different set of customers than those that read Tennis. He's not going to have to talk a pro into using VS/Lux. And, I don't know that anyone from these boards gets him to do their stringing either. I think he was just mistaken, it happens.

Tennis magazine will investigate further based on my emails. I received this today:

"I will again bring this up to Roman, and our other sources."

The company whose board you are using says exactly the same things, if you read the descriptions.

Rafael Nadal uses an AeroPro Drive without Cortex, strung with Babolat Tour Duralast 15L at 55lbs (25 kg), he uses a Babolat VS Original White Overgrip (Original grip sizes is 4 1/4 / L2.... With Babolat Syntec Black Grip)....
He puts 15g of lead at 12 o'clock and 5g of lead in the butt (handle)....

END....

Please do that and let me know. There was no response to the email I sent to the info address of ****.

no problemo. I will call on Monday...but you do know that you can call as well. He will gladly speak to you. In any event please tell me specifically what you want to know just so I do not miss anything.

That's from the magazine that tells you who won the French Open, after Wimbledon has finished.

I always wondered about that. Why haven't they ever had their printing and distribution adjusted around inevitable major news? Oh well, after seeing many other unexplainable malfunctions, I just stop wondering. Maybe next month they'll let their readers know if it's legal to hit around the netpost or what happens if the ball hits the frame twice in one motion. Federer might make front cover.

durability and less power. There was an article not too long ago that indicated that Babolat had sent the wrong string by accident to a tournament. It was 17 instead of his normal gauage. Nads got quite upset at his practice session because all the balls were going long. He was quite relieved when the mistake was discovered.

I Almost forgot to tell you!!! I spoke with Roman yesterday. I just bought the new babolats and asked him to customize. he said that he could not because he was on his way to prepare for the French . he is leaving tommorow.

Anyway just before i hung up I asked him if Nadal uses a Hybrid. He said that:

Nadal does NOT use a hybrid.

I am sure I left some of your questions out. sorry.

How can you even question what some posters have said....they have posted close ups of his racquet (without cortex) and it clearly has a full stringjob of tour duralast...

I didnt question anybody. I simply was asked to pose a question to Roman. He simply answered me. Its your choice to believe him or not to believe him.

Theres an old saying...."don't kill the messenger".

I wpuld like to say that although I do know Roman because he strings my racquets...anyone can simply call him up and just talk to him. The problem is that he is now leaving to france to prepare for the French Open. But when he comes back just give him a call.

Why would anyone bother to ring him?....you can clearly see its not hybrid..even from a picture of him playing which isnt close up on the racquet.

i can only spot 2 knots on nadal's racquet which i'm guessing it might be a one piece string job.. so no hybrid??

that pics looks like to me that:

1) it is not his 'own' racket because he will be using Tour Duralast which is yellow!

2) the pic is a long time ago...and this pic could be for a ad for Nike for the new Nike Pro he is wearing!
