Awful for the slam, as this was Djokovic's to lose but the absolute right decision and this is not the first time he does stuff like this, he could have calmly hit it in the direction of the ball kids but he hit it relatively hard and high and it's the first time i have seen him legitimately punished for it.

Magical overacting line judge!

I agree, massive overplaying of what happened but it doesn't change the fact that it DID hit them throat from an overly aggressive hit from Djokovic.

I've said it before, Djokovic is a mental midget. But this? Common, he shouldn't be disqualified. We're dealing with a drama queen here. Ball wah hit at 20 mph at most, please...

I hate USO. The whole situation is ridiculous. You have a 100 years old lineswoman screaming behind. What an awful tournament this USOpen.

It's a joke. This sport is so soft. How about we get some lines people who are young enough to have reaction times. Maybe Fed paid her to milk it and move her neck into the ball. So bizarre that some old lady is the reason the world #1 is DQd lol

Not a Djoker fan, but total rubbish. He wasn't even looking, didn't take a hard swing. Looked like he was just swatting the ball away.
I'm not a fan of Djokovic, but this decision is harsh.

I need more context that led up to him hitting the ball. From just the view of the shot itself, it doesn't appear there was any ill intent but that's coming from someone who wasn't watching. Perhaps there's more to this. Can someone share more details.

Edit: Yeah he hit that too hard and too high. Inappropriate but was there any history here that can shed more light.

"Sad for him? The lineswoman was the one who was helped off the court because Novak couldn’t control his anger."

It's OK to feel sad for more than one person in this. I feel sad for Djoko, and the woman, as well as all the fans who will miss seeing the rest of that match. A very unfortunate conclusion for everyone. But he deserved it. Hopefully he will learn from it.

Djoko is not my favorite but I do like him. He'll be back.

If Serena had done this, every post in this thread would be about banning her from the sport and stripping her of her titles but because one of the big 3 was responsible, you have people on here actually trying to claim it was too harsh a punishment. Really shows you which users have absolutely no integrity around here.

You need to consult the tennis rule book. It doesn't matter if it was accidental, the moment a player hits a ball in anger and it hits someone, it's an automatic default.
I know the rule. I just think the rule is dumb. How does one know if a ball is hit out of anger vs frustration? What's the difference? One you get DQd, the other you don't?
