Nadal has unfortunately had to pull out, meaning Carreno Busta takes his place as the number one seed. Nadal should not have played but we wish him well in his recovery. PCB now faces a vital match vs Thiem, in what will all probability be a low quality affair with Thiem out of form and PCB not really a top 10 standard player.

Thiem was all too predictable in his opening match against Dimi, bizarrely standing near the baseline on first serves but 10 feet behind it on second and staying there during rallies. Dimitrov didn't play great but was still the classier player throughout, aided by a poor first serve percentage from Thiem. Thiem is not going to adjust his strategy of standing far behind the baseline but he can at least get more first serves in and then try and dictate points. This is the area where he should be looking to improve this tournament.

Hard to say much about PCB, he has one win since the US open including being bagelled by Steve Darcis. He brings very little to the table at this level but if there's a match where he can get a win, it's this one. if PCB is solid enough he may find some success against a player who himself only has 2 wins since the US open. If PCB gets into the match Thiem may resort to his trick of hitting everything harder and harder which is not good for Thiem. Then again Thiem may see PCB as a weak opponent and an opportunity for himself to get a bit of confidence.

Prediction; Thiem in 3.

Well Nadal's inevitable withdrawal from WTF with the long-standing knee issue is a punch to the stomach for WTF. Thiem rounding into form should take this in 2. Anything less would be shameful given PCB's even worse Fall and knee issues after Schwartzman match in Vienna.

Do we have an alternate for the alternate?

Gonna need Kyle Edmund soon. Failure to talk JMDP in off the drunken boats full of Argentina hotties. :p

I wouldn't back PCB to take a a set off any other player in this tournament except Thiem :p

Could send an SOS to Argentina for Del Potro?

I'm looking forward to this match, should be some breaks of serve and we'll have fun moaning about their standard of play :D

Probably won't see PCB at the WTF's again so make the most of it!

You must be happy. Thiem can finally win a match at the WTF.

Only Thiemeles controls whether this match is a prolonged misery and he will drag it out to a third set before surviving, much to the crowd's chagrin.

I failed to mention there's little murmurs of Thiem carrying a back injury. No idea if that's affecting him but if it's there that lowers his chances.

LOL. He put Monfils literally out of the tournament last year and again at IW with injury.

I'd much rather have seen Nadal truth be told, but this does open a reasonable path to Fed.:D

If Grigor fails to make the semis from here he should retire pronto via Twitter

Nadal wouldn't have made it out of his group even if he played on [emoji23]

This could end up being the dream match for one individual. Only time will tell. lol
This will be the first stepping stone toward PCB being the first mid-tourney alternate to win WTF.
I doubt he takes Thiem, but he could if he plays out of his skin. Looking at the head to head he's given Thiem good matches. Thiem could use another three set workout. PCB beat Dimitrov in their two recent matches on clay so he could end up 2-0 which would be good enough for 2nd seed and he's never played Fed so who knows.:D

The level in Zed v Fed was pretty atrocious. This is a gold opportunity for the Group B players. If Goffin can't take Dimitrov in the early match he ought to pack it in rather come out of the group as #2 seed and play Fed. The player I'd most like to see come out as #2 seed is Thiem. If the Dimitrov vs. Goffin match is the melee expected, Thiem might be able to take out a gimpy Goffin. If Thiem gets through in straight sets Friday he would be a load for both Zverev and Federer in their current form. If he wins his way through, the worst draw for Thiem would be if he won group leader as Sock in his current form is plenty good enough to dust him up. Thiem getting through PCB, Gimpy Goffin, Faltering Fed, and gassed giraffe quite conceivable.:D After seeing FedZed I'd say really anyone still alive in this event could easily win it.

Thiem has a lot to gain. Dimitrov has temporarily passed Thiem in the live rankings, but is defending a truck load of points early in the year. Cilic was the biggest threat to Thiem's #4 ranking (Thiem needs to be ranked 5th come clay season to get top 4 seeding) and will remain so as Marin had a terrible start to 2017 so has little to defend. Putting Cilic in his rear view mirror in the rankings until clay season would be huge for Thiem.:p

All three matches today so far have been straight sets, two of them pure beatdowns. Have a sneaky feeling this one may be another.

PCB with a couple of confident service games early on, nice aggressive intent, going after his first serve as well, 120 mph consistently.
