Djokovic in Tank Mode Again in London

That's a good question. This is the last tournament of the year. He should be giving it his all. But you see he's not engaged or hustling for any balls. He's not even hitting smart shots. Hitting down the line backhand when stretched out wide is not a smart shot he normally would hit crosscourt till he can reposition back in the court. What a weird guy, just chooses when to play hard and goes to sleep when he doesn't feel like it.

It was clearly tanking, the question is, why?

Thought that Med broke his spirit in the first set by totally handling some seriously good play from him. Out played in the second set but Djokers head went down as Med was better than him at his own game. Telegraphed those drop shots and they became easy pickings. Congrats to Med - top of the group.

Djokovic was gassed halfway the first set. Didn't seem healthy and doesn't have the weapons to play short points vs Medvedev. Could probably do better and make it a better scoreline, but he gains nothing from that.

I'm worried for Djokovic come 2021 to be honest.

He was clearly outplayed, not a tank at all.
On come on, anyone who watched that match saw a full on tank from Djokovic. I don't even say this critically, just quizzically. My guy Lendl openly tanked a match in the round robin stage of the YEC (then called The Masters), so no hypocrisy.

I think Med had the temerity to be better at Djokers game than he was. Frustration and annoyance maybe. And when he knew it was going south saving himself for the Zverev match which he will fancy himself for.

As I said elsewhere, maybe he could see he would have to expend a lot more energy to counter Medvedev in this form and wanted to pace himself (he's not as young as he used to be) and save his energy for Friday's match against Zverev whom he's much more likely to beat. Then I expect he will raise his level for the semis and again for the final if he gets through to that.

See when I see comments like this it just makes me remember there are many unintelligent people in this world. If you can’t see that Djokovic showed no effort, WOW
You are not smart.
Having a bad match, lacking energy or focus is not equal to tanking.

Nope. But it's what usually causes tanking ;)

All matches are tanking for you.

That is pretty common in tennis.
A player is playing or completely outplayed and lost his/her focus and then is like is gone but it's not the same as no fighting or doing it deliberately.

I seen some of the match , Djokovic played poorly and lost points he should not have,, he is on the downswing.. Being beat 6-3, 6-3 shows little to no effort.

Cheers

He gave up mentally. Just signed off. He made his peace with the fact he was not going to win and put little to no effort to turn things around.

That's what you assume.
Djokovic was being outplayed and mentally collapsed of course but that doesn't mean he didnt't fight and didn't to comeback to win.

It's kinda sad how the way to beat the number one player on an indoor surface now is to be a bigger pusher than he is... it's also interesting how Djokovic can man-handle spin-oriented defensive players like Nadal on hard but seems helpless against flat pushers. Maybe the action on the ball helps him generate pace?

Djokovic has achieved what he could of his year’s ambitions.
Another slam and finishing the year at #1.
He’s won the WTF 5 times. I just don’t think it’s a Big Deal for him any more.
He hasn’t won it since 2015, what does that tell you? He’ll gear up for AO and win it.

He seemed fine when he was battling Med in games that lasted more than 10min...

Didn't see the match so take this with a lump of salt, but based on some of the highlights and the replays I've seen, it looks like he was just completely gassed after about 7-8 games. I think he's in danger next match with Zverev, but we'll see if this was some one-off or not.

Djokovic tried a lot in first 7-8 games but Medvedev made it clear he isn't going to bow down.

My impression is that once Djokovic got the whiff that it would be a Titanic battle, for some reason he mentally pulled out of it.

He was having trouble being Med's equal till 3-3 and afterwards he gave up

He is nursing something IMHO

oh okay, fine i guess we can roll the obituary then

eh he'll probably rek zed tomorrow anyway
Their last WTF meeting was indeed a rekking...with the opposite result. Zedraffe will not go into the match intimidated at all. Two years ago he had been thumped by Joe Kovic in RR but still whacked him hard in the finals rematch.
