Asics Gel Resolution 8

Got my first pair of GR8s, great looking (grey and orange version) and very comfortable and stable.
Two complaints though: I'm usually a 11.5, got these at 11 and even half a size down it's a bit long in the toebox, at least as long as my GR7s size 12. Anybody felt that? MY GR6s were fine in 11.
My vapors 9.5 size 11 were borderline uncomfortable but so speedy and glovelike.
And the upper does a clicking sound while walking, my GR7s did that too, hope it goes away.
Yeah, I had that clicking too. It either went away or I don't notice it while playing. Pretty sure it's the former and not the latter. Annoying, but I can overlook it because I love this shoe.

When will these GR8 shoes come back in stock? TW was supposed to ship me new shoes at the end of December and they keep delaying the ship date - now it is supposed to ship in mid-Feb., but I’m not holding my breath. The local pro shops are not getting any new shipments from Asics either. I don’t know what the problem is with their manufacturing production.

All you guys that tried the shoes,,, how many of you guys think this Dynawall is real deal and helps you get faster laterally,, and helps you to push off on change of directions ??

I didn’t know about dynawall. I find these to be well cushioned, stable shoes. These and the FF 2 are my current favorites.

Barricade 7 (aka Novak) and Gel Resolution 8 are the two models of shoes that are my all-time favorites. The only weakness of the GR8 compared to Barricade 7 is that I need to use a runner’s knot to prevent heel slippage and the shoe laces are very short. GR8 also lasts about 15-25 hours less than B7 before it gets too soft and I start getting some knee pain and ankle soreness after 60-75 hours of hard court play,

Other shoes either last half as long when they are lightweight or are heavy and clunky.

I do wonder why ASICS made the laces the way the did for this shoe. They’re so short and cheap feeling. Although I note they do stay tight and while they feel a bit thin and crappy, I’ve had no durability issues.

A strange feature on a shoe that otherwise seems carefully considered and thoughtfully designed in all aspects.

I never felt the laces were too short, and in fact after awhile they stretch and become too long. For sure they are thin and do feel a bit cheap but I always thought it was this way so that it allows your foot be a bit more comfortable in the shoe, especially with how narrow the forefoot is in this shoe. I think if they were thicker the laces wouldn't flex as much and you would develop pain on the top of your foot. The pouch on the tongue actually helps to corral the laces when they get long which is a good feature in my opinion.

I bought a pair of Gel Resolution 8's in the peacoat/white (mostly blue with white ASICS stripes and red outsole) color scheme yesterday. I had watched the TW review earlier in the day and noticed how some reviewers said that they went a half-size smaller. I had not been able to find a pair in my size (13) at any local shop or on TW, but I found a 12.5, so I bought those. They fit fine. My main concern is that my left Achilles tendon is sore. I've had soreness in that tendon for at least a couple of months now. I play twice a week, but I'd like to play three or maybe even four times. I've been irresponsible and not warmed up before hitting, which is generally a bad idea. However, I wonder if there is heel slippage in the shoe that is causing or contributing to it. I never had heel slippage with the Gel Resolution 7, but maybe I am with these. I don't notice my foot moving in the shoe. I tighten the laces to be very tight. I wear two pairs of Thorlo socks, so maybe all the padding around my heel doesn't allow the shoe to support the heel the way it should. I buy a new pair every six or eight weeks because I notice the cushioning flattens and doesn't support my foot as well as it did before. I wear custom insoles that support my arches. I stretch my calves and Achilles tendons (although not every day like I did for rehab for the months after I first hurt my foot). Achilles tendonitis scares me. I hope I find a solution. I'm looking at the thread about it on the health and fitness board for more ideas.

Have you tried using a runner’s knot utilizing the last shoelace hole also? I had heel slippage until I started doing that. Since then, it is my favorite current shoe.

I am not sure about cheapness and shortness. I have GR7 and GR8 laces side by side and they seem to be no different. However, I don't remember a single time they became undone on GR7 that have been using for years, and in my experience this happens quite often with GR8. But oherwise the shoe is great. I just bought the second pair.

Friend of mine who bought those shoes has the same issue. Massive heel pain while sitting in them, not standing. Try the FF 2 Speeds instead.
Runner knot also works fine in the FF2 Speed as laces are long enough.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I just tied the runner's loop on one shoe, and the heel of the shoe feels snugger around my heel. I will wait until my pain subsides before playing again. Then, I'll try the shoes laced this way.

Yeah they do stretch out over time. That’s a great point about the thin laces assisting with flexibility, and one I hadn’t considered. Nailed it!

Don't think your problem is slippage. Rather, think they are too tight.

I have worn leather shoes too tight - v sore achilles.

I've had the same experience with leather shoes that were too tight. However, with these, I had the pain when I was wearing the larger size, also.

Tying a runners knot has helped with the heel slippage, but I also have had achilles heel pain after wearing the shoes and playing in them. I think the heel counter has to do with it. I use the wide version and went half a size down because these shoes seem to fit long.

(Sorry we getting away from GR8 chat. Briefly, have had a pop in my achilles once, left the court during comp match(!), never before (or since). Pop was audible but it wasn't as bad as initial thought. I ended up with bruise coming out on Achilles right on heel of foot. Tendon health is real hard to get right. Eg. squats build quads but can leave tendons sore and vulnerable to injury. Not do before match! Check your whole regime.)

I find my GR8 not as cushioned or as nice as my SCB. Especially on hard court. But I find the GR8 quicker.

In heel-to-toe movement check you are getting what you want or need from the GR8. Definitely utilise aftermarket innersoles, always.

Think the Dynawall help with outer edge foot injuries, but nothing for heel in fact think less coverage....

"Asics has also lowered the external heel counter in the back of the shoe to address fit issues some people had in previous versions. "

Why such a drastic remodel of a successful shoe the great GR7?
Asics, please bring back the GR7s ... best Asics shoes ever made (maybe second only to the new FF2 Speeds.. we will see in a bit).

I think the GR7 was a great shoe, but I find the GR8 definitely superior. Most notably the durability of the GR8 far surpasses that of the GR7. I wore a hole in the heel backing of the GR7 in 1 month. I have been wearing my current GR8's for over a year and not even close to a hole in the same area. To me the GR8s feel more smug and are more stable, just wish they had some better colorways like the GR7s had previously.

Container availability shortages for imports coming in are what is causing the delays. It is out of TW and any other vendor's hands. Prices are 3x what they used to be or more and still hard to acquire for most companies.

so I had an order waiting from a couple sites, but I decided one day to try Asics.com. They showed that they were in stock so I ordered a pair of the french blue clay GR8's expecting to get an e-mail that they were actually backordered. Nope, they were delivered in 2 days! Needless to say I ordered a second pair because of the shortage. I don't know what the stock level is now, but they were available about 2 weeks ago. Good luck!

It is not universal. Three orders for GR8 I know of in the past 3 weeks have been delivered. All from different European shops.

Question specifically for red clay players, how are the uppers holding up in these shoes now that they have been around for a while?

Does anyone know if I can buy original insoles to GR8 or does any other insole be enough? I wear out my insoles under the big toe before the shoe is done

I asked the Asics store and they said no. No insoles and no laces. I bought instead the SIDAS Run 3Feet Protect. They come in low medium and high arch options.

Also, when using the runner's loop, be sure to bang your heel into the court or floor, etc. before doing your final "snug and tie" this ensures that your heel is nice and tight in the shoe. Works like a charm

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I tried the runner's loop, but while I play, I am still having significant Achilles tendon pain, mostly in my left Achilles, but the right one is somewhat sore also. I am going to seek medical treatment. I had a foot injury, like plantar fasciitis but inflammation of another tendon on the sole of my foot, in 2019. The rehab included treatment of the calves and Achilles tendons, such as massage, stretching, and ultrasound. I still stretch my calves, although less than I once did. I started stretching them more since I've had the Achilles pain. Unfortunately, that's too late to address this issue. I may try another pair of shoes to see if that helps. I've used the Gel Resolution since Gel Resolution 2 and have liked every successive model, but maybe the 8 doesn't work for my feet.

Thoughts......?
I just bought a pair of the white with black Asics logo as I wanted something that would match all my apparel. Like other have said, I did find the overall colourways a tad bland, especially the colour options, hence going for something very neutral to match whatever. Then, they go and release these haha! It's either plain or extreme pop with the colour of these trainers. I did like the look of the mako blue with the orange accents, too. Would definitely have been nice to see more variety in the designs - I'd potentially have gone for something like their ltd edition grey ones but I couldn't find them anywhere - they were potentially clay only? I don't recall.

The pics of the Toyko's above seem way more red than the ones listed on the TW site, the Sunrise Red. Are they the same colorway or different?

Went back to GR8s after about 5 -6 weeks in K-Swiss Hypercourt Express - used a lacing technique to alleviate some pressure on my forefoot - much better fit than previously - although some toe jamming

The pic on TW is closer to what the upper toebox looks like. Orange. Wouldve liked it to have a redder tone on the uppers towards the toes like in the pic but I can live with the orange

Just wanted to comment in here saying that I am also someone having Achilles heel pain after playing with these shoes for 4 months.
I had pretty severe knee pain, which the Gel Res 8 completely eliminated and for that I am grateful. The shoe is top notch, esp the cushioning. I've been thinking about getting a new pair but this newfound Achilles pain is making me hesitate.
I will say I think I got a half size too big, and will go with 9.5 instead of 10 next time. Can this be causing the pain? I'm going to try out double sock and runners loop later today to see if that helps.

Possibly, after 4 months of use, the cushioning has bagged out? How many hours were you playing/week in them on average?

I never had the 8 but I wrote a while back that the 7 caused heel slippage which is the reason I haven't bought any Asics Gel Resolution since.

Just wanted to update after last night's session where I used the runners loop for the first time. Made a significant difference in reducing how much my heel hurt and I was able to comfortably run down shots.

I always use the runner's loop in the GR7s however I did notice a bit of blistering and soreness on my anterior tibial tendon area just under the knot. I hope the padded tongue of the GR8s will make a positive difference.

Happily back in my GR8s. Use the runners loop, and modified the lower lacing to reduce pressure on forefoot. Seems to be working well

These shoes are good only for 60-70 hours on court if you play on hard courts. After that, they get too soft, loosen up too much and you need to lace too tight to get a snug fit which then puts unequal pressure on different part of the foot. So, you start getting soreness at different parts of the lower body like below the arch, achilles area, knee etc. once they get too soft. Throw them out or give them to charity once you start getting soreness after 60-70 hours.

This is anecdotal so take this however you want but I just want to say be wary when using the runners loops when you have not done so ever before. They keep your heel in place better, but since the laces are now cutting much tighter into your ankle, I believe it is easier to sprain and injure when moving laterally or jumping and landing. As socallefty mentions above, if you feel like resorting to lacing up differently, you might be better off getting a newer better fitting pair.

For the first 50-60 hours, I can use a runners knot without cinching the laces too tight and still get a snug fit. It is only when the shoe gets too soft that I have to cinch the laces too tight which leads to leg soreness for me. Right now, I like the GR8s for about 60 hours better than any other shoe on hard courts.
