Mayami strings

I haven't tried it yet, but I did play with their soon to be released multi in hybrid and I have a sample of the sygut in a stick now. Both definitely more lively than their counterparts from Head and YTex. Tension maintenance with the multi was impressive. Looking forward to comparing the gut offering to their competitors this spring and summer.

Can anyone compare big spin to FireWire?

IMO, Big Spin offers better string bed performance because of its twisted profile. The twist allows the sharp edge to face upward at every intersection. Whereas with FireWire the string bed surface may not be as consistent and give you an occasional ball that will come off the racquet erratically. I think FW offers more power, but it takes longer for Big Spin to go dead. FW also is available in different gauges, while Big Spin is only available at 1.25. Finally, I think triangle shaped string perform better in a hybrid rather than in a full bed set up. IME, it felt like I had better control and more spin with triangle shaped mains and slick poly crosses like with Prince XC or Mayami's Magic Twist.

You might want to give Firewire BOOST a try. It’s a Firewire/Ghost Wire poly/poly hybrid setup.

Thanks for the suggestion. FWIW, I've played FW BOOST and with FW for 4+ years. Strictly talking T1 strings, FW/RIP, my fav, is actually superior in both spin and power compared to BOOST. I, and several clients, like the overall crisper feel of the setup. I've since replaced FW with Big Spin when recommending this setup to players who would benefit from it. As I wrote above, slick poly crosses like with Prince XC, Mayami's Magic Twist, Strike Force RIP compliment triangle shaped strings quite well.

That said, you need to string FW Boost and Big Spin Boost in two racquets and look closely at the string beds side by side. The vertex angle faces up in the string bed much more uniformly with Big Spin thanks to it's twisted design. The end result, and IME, is a much more consistent, reliable response. I am looking forward to, among other setups, trying a Big Spin / Ghost Wire combo.

Yeah, i have tried both Big Spin and Tour Hex. I like Tour Hex just a bit more due to a smidge more control and it's feel just connects with me. The fact that both of them hold tension well is nice bonus. Tour Hex reminds a bit of S7T that is softer and a nicer pocketing string. Of all the smaller name strings I've been trying i like TH the most followed by BS so i'd say Mayami has made an impression on me. I have three racquets strung with TH and 1 with BS right now.

How does the Tour Hex compare to other popular strings like HyperG and Cyclone? Tour Hex gets an incredibly high rating on Stringforum.net (Big Spin does too, but comfort and feel are not quite as good).
Thanks.

It is not plasticky like cyclone and not as muted as hyper-g. Comfort and touch is better than those two.

Does Tour Hex play well in a full bed or should it be crossed with a multi?
Some people say that Big Spin is best in a hybrid setup, so I'm wondering if it's the same case with Tour Hex.

Great, looking forward. And if there is a playtest via tennis-warehouse (or if it were possible to send samples in Switzerland!) I would be glat to test the string(s) !
Hit for another 2.5 hours yesterday with the Perfection/Magic Twist combo. Honestly like this hybrid ... a lot ... after I got in sync with the string bed. My arm feels great, like I never hit at all on Sunday. My control was much, much better so I don't know if I should mark it up a point, but the only really change to my initial review concerns durability. Having played five hours with this installation, there are four or five strings that are notched about half way through. It will be interesting to see if I can make it 10 hours. For the performance, comfort and price, I think this will be a good buy next year.

I never play with a full bed of poly of the same string so I'll take suggestions for a cross string for my next installation of Perfection. In the mean time, after this breaks, I'll try out the set of sGut they sent. What string do you think I should try as a cross string next?
To give me an idea of how Mayami's various strings play, would anyone care to compare and contrast the following setups:

1. Big Spin full bed
2. Big Spin crossed with Magic Twist (a.k.a. the "Big Twist")
3. Tour Hex full bed

I just discovered Mayami strings today on the message board and am very excited to learn more! Why hasn't TW done reviews on this company yet? Thanks.

I have not tried the hybrid but have used both Bin Spin and Tour Hex in a full bed. I like the performance of fresh Big Spin, but am not a fan of its durability. When it is fresh, Big Spin has good grip on the ball, with above average comfort and good consistency of response. However, the pointy edge of Big Spin wears down for me within the first couple of hours and the stringbed loses launch angle. As the point wears down more, Big Spin acts more and more like a thin gauge round string, which is fine but there is loss of spin capability to go along with the loss of launch angle. Lastly, I've experienced a sizeable number of shear breaks where, in the middle of the stringbed, it tears longitudinally, like this:

uc

I've strung up Big Spin for one player in particular who would switch to this string, but he's the one who has experienced a couple or three of this same kind of break and has gone back to his normal string.

Tour Hex is a very nice string. When I playtested it, I thought it was a slightly less harsh and slightly less crisp version of Tour Bite. Very consistent response across my range of swing speeds, with enough spin capability to play practically every shot I have without being overly sensitive to incoming spin.

I'm one of those people who say Big Spin is better in a hybrid, especially crossed with with Magic Twist, aka BIG TWIST. Tour Hex OTOH, I have haven't tried in too many hybrid setups. I did it once with Irakandju and once Big Spin. After that, my notes show I string it full bed. IMHO, Tour Hex in a full bed plays well in 16x19, 105s.i. or larger heads. As I mentioned on another thread, I string it for folks who use Pro Staff Teams, EZones and Pure Drives and in my own Radical MPs and in the Pure Storm Tour.

If you are looking for a multi set up, my top recommendation is ideally Mayami Perfection (not out yet, but I demoed it) mains with Magic Twist crosses. After only a slight drop in initial tension, it played consistently until it broke. It was a very comfortable, dependable setup for doubles play. I tried natural gut mains/Magic Twist crosses, but needed to string it higher. Just way too much power that I could not reign in. NXT/Magic Twist would be a good combo as well if you are looking for something softer without sacrificing power or control.

• Big Spin full bed ...

Honestly, I haven't tried it. Having cut my teeth on TierOne's FireWire in full bed and various hybrids for several years, my experience is full bed triangle shaped strings tend to lack dependablity. You can get to the ball in time, set up, take the cut and the ball occasionally will come off your strings like a shank. Another ball later with the same stroke, you'll rip the fuzz off the ball for a winner. In general, I believe square and triangle shaped strings are best suited for hybriding.

• Big Spin crossed with Magic Twist (a.k.a. the "Big Twist") ...

Go through the thread and read my comments. Lotsa spin, better control and durability. Did I mention lotsa spin??? Babolat friendly. This is a go-to for people who rely more on spin than power to frustrate players and win points.

• Tour Hex full bed

Just do it. In 16x20, 98si frames it isn't anything special, IMHO, but in a 98, 16x19 it is a different beast. Not as much spin as the two options above, but way than a round string will give you. The bonus here is more control and less sensitivity to incoming spin in my book. Yes, probably harsher in lighter, softer frames, but I don't wouldn't be able to tell since I'm generally swinging 12+ oz.

Magic Twist is the utility poly string. I have players who use it full bed, some - myself included - who use it as cross for natty gut and multifils, and some that really like it in the Big Twist setup.

If you get a chance to play with all three, don't forget to share your experience with here. If you like spin and your game kinda revolves around it, I think you will enjoy Big Twist.

I would be interested to see if this would happen to you if you used a round cross like Ghost Wire or even Magic Twist. It really looks like once you notch the string from normal play, your strings are slicing and sawing through. Is that a main or cross that is sheered?

I think that was a cross string. That photo is from posts I made earlier in this thread - see posts #63 through about #74. To reiterate, I think what happens is a nick happens near the tip of the string and that forms a stress point that can't withstand the big hitting these players subject the string to, so it tears longitudinally. The tearing doesn't look like it happens from where the strings contact each other.

I have to say that I really love Big Spin full bed!

It offers a unique "crispy, spiny, thin and light" feel and unlike other strings, it doesn't need a break-in period, it plays well from the first stroke. Of course, the edges get less sharp after a while, but I didn't recognize such a big change in playability character. Probably because I don't hit as hard as @Injured Again and his friends.

It broke after 10 hours, which is quite normal for a poly.

As I wrote above, I only tried some hybrid combos with Big Spin mains because the guy who strings my racquets hated to string Big Spin full bed (the edges are so sharp and the string twists all the time…).

The best two combos were “Big Twist” and “Big Alpha” (see my posting #88).

At the first outing, Big Twist was too low-powered, so I was permanently pushed into a defensive position. Three days later, I gave this combo a second chance, and I noticed that it had softened up and played really well.

Comparing Big Spin full bed to Big Twist:

With Big Twist, you gain a bit of control and stability against hard strokes and incoming spin, but you lose a bit of the unique feel described above.

If you use the combo, I would suggest stringing the Magic Twist crosses at least 3 lbs. lower than the Big Spin mains.

Interesting thing - just saw on their social media that Ilya Marchenko won a final match vs Murray (challenger in Biella). He was using Magic Twist. Good to see some smaller brands making their appearance on tour and such a high lvl... counts twice if it's a final. Murray makes it a life-time experience :) This brand is really growing on me :)

Magic Twist seems to last longer. You might want to try the "Big Twist", which is Big Spin main with Magic Twist crosses. Nearly the same great spin minus the shearing
I ordered one pack each of Big Spin, Magic Twist, and Tour Hex for the two new racquets that I'm going to purchase. I'm going to try the "Big Twist" hybrid in one frame and the Tour Hex full bed on the other.

If it matters any, 90% chance that I'll probably end up buying the Prince Textreme Tour 100 (310) since I liked it so much on the last demo, but I may go with the 2021 Radical MP or Pure Strike 16x19 third gen; we shall see after this weekend's demo. I don't think that the Prince is string sensitive, but I could be wrong. I may just try the Big Spin in a full bed later on this year because I'm not really a hard hitter and I'm not all that concerned with shearing.

What tension recommendations would you give for the "Big Twist" and the Tour Hex? Thanks.

Start with Big Spin full bed. Great starting point if you are looking for "wow" factor. Very comfortable , very forgiving. Obviously highest spin potential from Mayami offering. Still very control oriented. I didn't experience any issues with launch angle as i usually do with 3 or 4 sided strings. Haven't tried Tour Hex yet... Magic Twist 1.25 reminded me of Yonex Poly Tour Pro but more spin. I prefered 1.30 Magic Twist but the performance was different than 1.25. More towards RPM blast rough style if you are familiar with that one.
Have a good one ! :)

I tried "Big Spin" from my post on this page on 2/9/21 at 50x48. It lasted me 6 hours. I think it was a good starting tension in my modded Prince Phantom 100x 305, but didnt last very long. I should have went a little lower, maybe 48x46.
Will be using tour hex in the near future at the same tension.

Hello again 408 ... so you have the 100x 305? How did you modify it? Was it too underpowered for you? I was very interested in demoing it but then I saw some reviews seeing as how it is lacking in some plow through/power. One guy got frustrated trying to modify it and concluded that it was just not a good frame for modifying, and he ended up switching rackets. I do not want to deal with an underpowered racket. That's why I'm getting away from my Rebel 95. The Phantoms seem so great, but I wish that had more pop/power, but then I guess that is the whole purpose of the Tour line.

Did the Big Spin lose too much tension or did it start to get rubbed smooth by the ball and start losing its spin generation?

I added 2g of lead tape to 10oclock, 2g at 12 oclock, 2g to 2 oclock under the bumper and it plays well. Unfortunately the prince I got from TW brand new was underspec so after the mod it came out to 11.4oz and 6 pts head light. A friend of mine is selling his TT310 that he bought new and threw in his closet so I forwarded your email to him.

Oh I didn’t know there was big spin 1.30 now
Ye i think they sold out fast and after they are gone they No longer appear on website but not sure... Anyway its a great string for a baseliner. Very comfortable and forgiving. In 1.30 i had very neutral launch angle. I think one of the biggest tests of launch angle is returning a fast serve when you dont have much time to think and adjust , you Just go for it. With big spin 1.30 i could rip it with confidence that the ball will land in. Out of the strings from my ultimate string of choice reviews (http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/index.php?threads/ultimate-string-of-choice.689948/) this one is the most comfortable with control on same lvl. I wish i could play better volleys with it... Maybe matter of time and adjustments.. something about triangle shape i think... (as a junior i was developed with round strings)

Yeah, i have played a couple of sets in my BPs and i definitely like the string. It's funny because in a short time i found 3 strings from small names i really like. Toroline caviar is also quite good but my favorite is tour hex with a bit more control then big spin. Glad to see these smaller guys make great strings

Big Twist in the Pure Strike should be fun.

Trying Big Spin mains with Lux 4G crosses at 60# this weekend. Then probably back to one of my new favorites Mayami hybrids to use up the other half of a demo set of Perfection in the mains and Magic Twist crosses. Last time (first time), I strung it at 57/51 but need to bump the tension a bit.
