Connors to leave Roddick

I see it coming to. Roddick is too stubborn.
This is a fairly obvious statement. Tennis coaches, like coaches in every sport, have the shelf-life of fruit. It's rare to see a coach last very long in any sport, especially tennis...except if they're related. There are a few exceptions of course, but sport is a business now more than ever, and, unfortunately, is subject to a business cycle. When things are going well, we love the coach, but when things start to recess...bye-bye coach. In Roddick's case, there has yet to be much of an up-turn with Connors, yet. Connors is supposed to make Roddick competitive with Fed, which might be asking much of any coach on the planet.

The problem with Roddick is his forehand has dwindled into a weak shot and his backhand always sucked. He gets bullied around from the baseline by most players. His serve is what keeps him in it but against the best he is fatally flawed.

Wasn't Roddick out of the top 10 when he started working w/ Jimbo? Since working with Jimbo, didn't Roddick win a master series and get to the finals of the US Open. Didn't Roddick get to the year end championships and have 2 match points on one of the top 3 GOAT candidates.
Of course he had a crappy clay season which included an injury and a rough 1st match draw at the FO, but that's no surprise.
Last time i checked a quarter final (Queens) isn't too bad of a result and i'll be surprised if it doesn't turn into to semi or better.

I was at Queens today, and I got to hang near to Roddick and Connors as they chatted on an outside court (with almost nobody else around) after his match with Bogdanovic. They sounded very much like a team, and talked about strategies for the future. There was no sign of a breakup that I could see.

I never like Roddick, even in the juniors I thought he was a jerk but that being said, the guy is 3 in the world...I think the results have come, have been there and with the clay season behind him will continue to come.

That I can believe. Probaly he said great advice is being given out here that you cant find anywhere else. Like how the number 1 player in the world should make a simple change and switch to a two handed backhand to beat Nadal at the FO. :mrgreen:

to what i remenber roddick has never been strong on clay, and this is the time (grass the hardcourt season) when he starts showing everybody how much of a strong player he is.

I think Connors sees Roddick as his son or something. Since his kids aren't any good at tennis anyway, he might as well adopt Roddick as his son, lol.

Not to mention he has virtually nothing to defend at Wimbledon this year and will be back to three when it is over.

Roddick needs Connors more than Connors needs Andy.
Connors got him to play closer to the baseline, play a little smarter perhaps. Roddick's game is totally dependent on his serve which is great when it is on.
If he isn't hurt, Andy will have a great grass and hardcourt season and finish around number three in the world. Not too shabby.
I doubt if Connors will be back as a full time coach next year...... it is a lot of traveling and that gets old quick. Unless he really wants to get the hell out of the house and have an excuse to gone from home for weeks at a time. He has been married for 30 years so maybe that was his true motivation to become Roddick's coach. ;o)

They are totally different type of coaches so I am not sure your comment is accurate. Lets not forget that Roddick had success with Gilbert as well.

no coach can get roddick to win an other GS. he played out of his mind (against an injured JC Ferrero) to win the US Open. the other players have caught up to his serve and taken away the advantage. i'm actually surprised he is still in the top 10.

I love the photos you have posted of Team Roddick! I love Jimmy and Andy. They seem to work really well together, and have a good time. When I was at queens watching andy practice, when Andy was taking a break, Jimmy and John were hitting together. Was nice to see!

Connors-Roddick will split because Connors has been a great champion, great competitor, great fighter, great argumentative, never accepted anybody as a coach except his late mother Gloria. Eventually he will not take any nonsense from Roddick; and Roddick will get tired of listing to those great stories of Jimmy's heroics.

I think the problem with Andy is just the nature of the game. He was having major problems and just about anybody in the Top 100 could beat him. Then Jimmy revamped his game and he could take just about anyone on, even get match points on Federer. Obviously this gets him a lot of attention and everybody starts studying his game and making up new gameplans to beat him. Thus, he is having a hard time again. It's only natural in this game.
