Twelve of Europe's top clubs announced on Sunday they were launching a breakaway Super League, headed by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.

As a very casual fan who pays attention only once every four years (guess during what tournament) I've been reading up on this bombshell and still don't see how one can justify this spectacularly shortsighted, self-serving move by the fat cats. Why aren't Messi, Ronaldo and other superstars speaking out against this shameless power grab which will destroy international football as we know it? Silence is simply not an option at this critical juncture in their sport's history.

Ander Herrera is one of the first to speak out about it. Bruno Fernandes made a cryptic sort of comment, although it was clear enough what he was talking about. I'm thinking more will speak against it but can't be sure. Maybe there could be fear.

It's outside the official channels for a start, and it's a European-wide competition and not a merely national one.

With "official channels" you mean UEFA, in this case? Is that inane officiality? And I'd say NBA, NHL, MLB are "trans-national", if you like to view Canada as an independent country...

Cross-national involving two nations is still rather parochial compared to this proposal.

And I think official channels involves the national level as they do want to take up room in the football calendar.

Luke Shaw sent a tweet earlier. He didn't want to be harsh on United despite opposing the plans. To be fair, I guess it is difficult. When you think of the pundits and all that, they are free to say whatever they want. They can urge other players to speak up but they are not in the same situation. The players are still getting paid by the club.

It does seem likely that United will be pulling out. I can't be sure yet. Looking like the whole idea has been shot down quickly, unless I'm mistaken once again. I'm thinking Woodward has come to the realization that it is not going to work and no way back now since he is one of the main ringleaders.

Football is already elitist so making it more so is not going against trend. Opposition to it is an exercise in nostalgia weaponised in a conflict between powerful rivals.
