Nikola Pilic : Roger Federer Wouldn’t Have Been Disqualified what Novak Djokovic was...

Sunny014

Legend
Novak Djokovic’s dream of a Calendar Grand Slam was crushed at the US Open 2021. It took only three sets for Daniil Medvedev to defeat the World No.1 and claim his maiden Grand Slam title. Moreover, Djokovic couldn’t accomplish his second dream of becoming the first-ever men’s tennis player to win 21 Grand Slam titles.

In recent years, the US Open has not been great for Djokovic, as even US Open 2020 was bizarre for the legendary player. The Serbian tennis star unintentionally hit one of the line judges with a ball in frustration during the round of 16 match.

This incident resulted in Djokovic’s disqualification from the tournament. To this incident, former Croatian player Nikola Pilic made some furious statements.

Nikola Pilic on Djokovic’s disqualification at US Open 2020

Ever since Djokovic was disqualified for the event, people have shared various opinions on that subject. Nikola Pilic believes the foreigners have a negative image of Novak Djokovic.

He believes that for no apparent reason, the foreign public has disliked World No. 1. He even said that it was because he came from a little country called Siberia and had dominated players from larger nations.

Moreover, he added that people should have more respect for Novak, who he praised for his humanitarian efforts. Pilic also discussed the situation involving Novak Djokovic at the 2020 US Open. He was enraged at the people’s reaction. Pilic even claimed that if Roger Federer had done the same thing as Novak Djokovic, he would not have been disqualified.

Novak Djokovic has achieved 20 Grand Slam titles in his professional career. He is currently the World No. 1 since February 2020. Despite having such a spectacular tennis career, Pilic believes people often criticize Djokovic for his mental temperament.

Djokovic was negligent and paid for that mistake. What is sad is that he didn't.learn his lesson because I have seen him smash racquets dangerously close.to people (Olympics) and hit balls against the stands after.the USO. The guy will never learn, he is who he is. This appeal to make him into a victim is hilarious. Federer might have made a mistake once, but Djokovic is a habitual offender.

Novak has the worst temperament of the big 3 and gets criticized accordingly. Fedal would receive the same treatment, but they don’t act like that

Why would they disqualify Novak but not Fed?
Because hes from Switzerland not Serbia. I remember one time after Federer hit ball boy in the face about 10x time harder than Djokovic hit drama queen at USO, Federer smiled like this is nothing :) Nothing bad with the smile, we need smile more ;)

Double standarts everywhere, its obvious, no need topics about that.
There is no such thing as double standards. If there is more than one - it is is not a standard. Claiming something is double standard is using the word standard without understanding it's meaning. People believe the word means what they are able to understand it or they prefer it's meaning is or whatever. Double standard is OXYMORON. It is a logical fallacy.

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/oxymoron
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxymoron

Exactly the opposite is correct - to only way to implement standard is to monitor individuals (like we monitor kids) who do not understand what is standard and why it must be implemented. For stupid to comply with standard, standard must be enforced upon them.

I see different outcomes from same actions for different persons. You can call it whetever you want if it sounds better to you.

Eh, this is a dumb statement for several reasons:

1) Federer has gotten his fair share of discipline as a result of slightly hotheaded behavior. Most recently(ish) at Shanghai 2019 against Zverev, Nacho Forcadell gave him a point penalty instead of a second warning (which can be given at the umpire's discretion) for framing a ball out of the court when Federer clearly meant to tap it to the back of the court. So it's silly and ignorant to say he'd never get penalized/overpenalized for bad behavior.

2) The victimistic mindset is here on display yet again. People don't dislike Djokovic because of his nationality, and at this point it's getting tiring to hear it. Djokovic isn't as disliked as some try to make him out to be, and more than that his constant poor behavior on court as well as disastrous dealing with covid-related stuff in 2020 are the reasons I don't like him. For each person there's a different reason, and I highly doubt there's a lot of people who dislike him due to nationality. I mean, seriously, how many people are hating on Cilic, Dimitrov, and other guys from the region? They've all beat "the top guys from the big countries" on important occasions, where's the hate for them? There's clearly no connection between nationality and dislikability there.

3) As mentioned in 2, Djokovic's behavior on court has been poor consistently and he's clearly never learnt his lesson (not even after the horrendous 2020 incident). As far back as the ATP finals of 2011 he was asked about an incident where he threw a racquet that almost hit a ball kid and he arrogantly shrugged it off saying that it didn't hit him so it doesn't matter. Such cocky, reckless, and remorseless behavior very rarely comes without eventual extreme consequences which is indeed what we saw.

4) Finally, whether or not Federer would have gotten disqualified should be of no importance. We've seen so many other players commit similar errors and be equally heavily penalized and by what I've shown in 1, I think the same would've happened to Federer for such an offense. However, all this is besides the point. Complaining about a fair punishment is stupid if your reasoning is that someone else specifically may not have gotten it. Furthermore, if your reasoning against a certain course of action is a hypothetical double standard (yes, sounds really dumb when phrased like that but that's exactly what it is) then your reasoning is flawed and in fact you have no argument at all, just a whiny and nonexistent excuse.

Disclaimer: I am not and have never been a fan of Federer, in fact I don't really care for him at all. However, it is beyond silly to say what is said in Pilic's statement so I had to respond for the sake of my own clear conscience.

Its not accurate compare Djokovic to Dimitrov. Djokovic came and destroyed legacy of Federer which resulted that he got so much hate. Federer was like santa claus for kids and Djokovic took it. Djokovic is a champion, and to be a champion you need character. Yes, hes done some mistakes on court, but arent we all done mistakes?I hadnt met perfect human in my life yet. But when you see whole picture of Djokovic, what hes doing outside tennis court and so on, hes far better human being than most of us.

Lines person, ball boy kid or any people in the audience are the same. Or not?

I disagree on the ball kid thing. We have seen many players hit the ball towards the ball kids in order to speed up things, especially between first and second serves. So it is not entirely unexpected to have the ball hit towards them. However, there's no use case where linesman/woman and the crowd can expect the ball hurled towards them with little to no reaction time. Once Novak had hit the lineswoman, there was no other outcome that he could have expected.

Absolutely true. But not the case at second video in this topic. Ball boy couldnt except this ball. But this wasnt the worst, i saw other video when Federer hit ball boy really hard in the head, which could have much bigger consequences if the ball hit kids eye and he could left blind. With ball speed from Djokovic i dont think it could lead to serious injury.

I feel that Roger would have smiled and that USO lady would have smiled back at Roger, then play would have resumed as usual, however it was Novak and so she was double angry on him, so she complained and got him banned :D

You're completely missing the point though. Djokovic wasn't well liked when he had achievements comparable to the players I mentioned. Moreover, Djokovic's mistakes have not only been on court but also off court which I said and you ignored for whatever reason. Finally, this whole discussion came about an idiotic statement as quoted in the OP. You admit Djokovic made a stupid mistake? Good, then the argument should end there. He deserved the sanctions that were applied and that's all there is to it. To delve into hypothetical double standards is ridiculous and in fact ignorant

Then what about players hitting the ball to ball kids behind them without looking over their shoulders? Should that also not construe as dangerous? In my view, ball kids are expected to be ready for ball coming their way and hence the difference.

Ball boys are there to catch and distribute balls. So they are always following the ball.

Lines persons have no other job than calling out or shut up otherwise.

Fed can be arrogant, childish, and disrespectful towards opponents, Rafa can be salty, but neither possesses the mean streak that hides inside Novak. Even at their most temperamental and immature, I never saw them lose control of their actions like Novak does from time to time.

That's part of the reason many people approach Novak rather cautiously. Well behaved, well spoken, but there's that psycho little flame glimmering inside. No doubt, there are also niche fans who like him precisely for that. Dangerous explosives inside.

Anyone would be disqualified - Nadal or Fed or Djokovic or anyone. You can't do that. period.

Novak's image is really bad, people are already seeing him shouting and doing all sorts of stuffs with his racquet breaking, so when he hits a lineswoman obviously she will press charges.

My gut feeling is, had Federer done that it would have been seen as a honest mistake and the lady would have let it go, Federer might have been warned by referee and media might have printed it that day making some news but that's it, he would never have been defaulted.

Novak's bad image has everything to do with people not seeing it as a mistake but a deliberate carelessness that deserves punishment.

Sunny014

Legend
There is no way to actually prove this but I am 100% sure Federer would not have been defaulted if he had done that.
It would have seen as a honest mistake and both of them would have smiled at each other or done something like that, play would have stopped for a few minutes with Fed enquiring how she is and thats it, it would have resumed soon.
But in Novak's case it is seen a habitual loose cannon hitting someone and the need to punish arises.

Most players and Djokovic have been more aggressive towards hitting the ball towards ball kids and audience before .
It is all about reaction of the Lady !

If there was a young kid who stood his/her ground and didnt fall down and smiled and Novak smiled back . This incident would have been funny for the commentators , as we have seen in many cases before ..( although I don't understand what's funny about it )

The moment the lady fell down as if she would die , disqualification was expected .
Even if the lady stood up and told the officials she wants to continue her job and didn't take medical time out , DQ wouldn't have happened mostly .

Federer himself said " this incident was unfortunate and that Novak was unlucky here " .

Initially , even I thought that if it was Fed ,he wouldn't be disqualified.
Now ,I think it's not about Fed or anyone , it is totally about the reaction of the lady . How she felt about the incident .

Kids/youngsters don't have ego , they laugh after being hit sometimes . Older people get upset on such incidents . The lady looked more upset . Her stare at Djokovic says Everything . :-D

As Federer says , " Novak was unlucky " .
No use discussing this topic anymore !

Federer and Novak are actually same in inner attitude regarding all this, just that Roger's way of carrying himself later is different and it makes a difference.
No surprise that Fed feels Novak was just "unlucky" because he too has done to ballkids and not even shown remorse/any concern as it is a part of the game

But Rafa is a bit different, once he hit a ballkid and quickly went to that small girl and enquired, even kissed the kid on the cheek, Rafa is a very careful guy when it comes to violence.......not the same can be said about Roger/Novak, they are violent from within, especially Novak :D

Everyone loss **** time from time, humans have emotions. However you see at these emotions its up to you. For you hitting ball hard with anger into ball boy is not as bad as accidentily hit lines women with much slower ball. Well ok its your opinion.
I like Novak for his tennis play and for his behaviour outside of competitive matches. And i never call someone psycho when i dont know his true personality.

He wouldn't, because the lines woman would be so honored to be hit by the GOAT she would never have the guts to fall over like she did.

That said, Fed would also be very unlikely to throw an anger tantrum like that in the first place.

I'm not really interested in continuing this discussion especially since it's irrelevant to the topic at hand, but it's been well discussed and well documented on this forum as well as elsewhere. The Adria Tour and his statements against vaccinations have been the biggest issues for me

Federer does have a better leverage to potentially sway some umpires, but it's because of his good reputation, and it is not based on Roger being Swiss.

Still, in the instance where the linesperson is strongly affected by the hit, I think the umpire would apply the same judgement to Federer as he did with Novak. The umpire's judgment was clearly not about intention but about the impact. We need to understand that the umpire was under a lot of pressure, having to make a decision fast while seeing this lady falling and holding her throat like that. To him it probably looked like a bigger emergency than it ended up being.

Big difference here is that the lineswoman had a pretty damning reaction after being hit. The ball boy had no reaction.

In other words, one was visibly hurt, the other wasn't so no reason to disqualify Federer.

Yes, maybe lot of Novak fans are annoying but that has nothing to do with it being fanbase of a particular player. There are similarly annoying people among other fanbases as well ... I mean look at some queens that support Nadal on this forum. Look at the legendary Murray worshipper. They have nothing good to say about any other player except their idol. So, generalizing, like in any other scenario, is not valid in this case as well.
