Delpo handed his Fed his most frustrating loss ever at US Open 2009 finals. He also ended Fed's streak at IW 2018 when Fed had, you guessed it, 40-15 championship points on his serve. This loss essentially ended Fed's dreamy comeback as he was never quite the same after.

Percentages will tell you Delpo plays Rafa tougher but Delpo hit Fed where it hurt more often than any player this generation outside Djokodal.

Del Potro was only good against Nadal in 2009, before his first big injury in the left wrist that ruinned his backhand.
In 2009 Del Potro was a super tall man with a very good two handed backhand, so he didn't have much problems with the heavy topspin of Nadal.

After that injury his backhand never recovered, and he begun to use slice a lot.

They played 3 times in 2009, this is the Miami match when Nadal wasn't injured

Very true that Del Potro gave Fed some losses he should have won. Even still, Nadal had the most trouble with him. Why? No one answered my question

It’s quite simple, my favorite player ever Ol’ Rog struggled moar against the ATGs while building up his career/legacy against 2nd tier players. He had no choice but to go all out vs the Roddicks, Hewitts, and Delpos of the world. That and he got to play him like 10x in Basel.

not even true, both are leading in their h2h vs del potro, while he both had huge wins against them. close thread, fake premise!

Glad to see you’re a fan of the GOAT Roger now. I knew I converted you from being a Nadal fan once I pointed out that Nadal has lost to geriatric Fed in their last 8 matches

Nice try you RAFAN! I’ll give you that RAFA dominated my favorite player and then graciously threw him a couple bones in 2017 to make the H2H somewhat moar respectable, but I’ve accepted that my guy is the 3rd best of all time. The writing was on the wall when I saw teenage RAFA whip peak Fed over and over again. It still hurts to this day. Still though, a bronze medal means you made the podium, and there’s no same in that.

I don't think Nadal would have a tough time with Delpo now. It's just that his high bouncing balls was perfect height for delpo at the time. He has a much improved arsenal now.

Yeah Nadal was always a match-up problem for Fed but remember that Nadal still never fared well against the rest of the field, barring clay. That’s why Fed has more grass and hardcourt titles and why Nadal never had his own era

I like how you Nadal fans are as humble as your hero himself. Come on man! Your guy has 21 Slams now and will add more. My favourite player Roger on the other hand won't be adding any more Slam title. Maybe ATP 500 if we get lucky.

Unfortunately for me and Ol’ Rog, RAFA has done better outside of clay than my guy has outside of his best conditions. And RAFA has had his own era. His best years were when the tour was at its strongest in 2008-2013. Plus he’s been the most successful player since 2005. I was just happy that Ol’ Rog was able to carve out his own reign however small it was before the stronk era came. I was especially grateful to RAFA for allowing Ol’ Rog to get the #1 ranking back in 09 through RAFA’s injuries...unfortunately that year was marred by my guy choking the 09 USO F to Delpo of all players

Nadal's rally ball didn't trouble a peaking Delpo too much. He didn't seem too bothered by the spin and didn't mind hitting it up high. That made him dangerous for Nadal.
And for Federer.

Oh believe me, I’ve cried myself to sleep many a times after all the beat downs that RAFA has given my guy. I’ve accepted your guy RAFA is the best ever. Thank you though for trying to lessen the blow, but the damage is done. That 21st schlem has officially put RAFA in the lead, with Joker in 2nd which leaves my guy in 3rd. And he’s only falling further and further behind with each passing year

Why would you want Joker to beat your favorite player? That doesn’t make any sense. There is such a thing as being too humble you know.

Rafa may be the better, greater player, and there's no shame in coming second or third to him (and Djoker). But no one can deny that our guy had the most beautiful game among ATGs. They can never take that from us.

Don’t worry, Nadal will still be remembered as the clay GOAT when all is said and done. Just not the hardcourt or grass GOAT

Unfortunately, at the rate he’s going at he’ll be remembered as the greatest ever. No one has dominated a surface like he has while also having so much success on the other surfaces. He was able to beat my guy in big Fs off clay like Wimby 08 which many consider the greatest match of all time, and AO 09. I wish that Ol’ Rog would have been able to get a least one win over RAFA at RG, but sadly he couldn’t even push him to 5 sets

Fedr won 72% of his matches vs Del Po, and Humbalito won 65% of his. That's not a huge difference.

Now Fedr and Humbalito's head to head records vs a guy like Davydenko, that's a huge difference.

Something that is not said much is that if Nadal had been at 100% capacity in the semifinals of the US Open in 2009, he would have won at least one set and the match could have lasted up to four hours, with which, even if Del Potro had won (which is most likely, it must be said), he would not have had much energy left to battle the next day against Federer and the Swiss would have defeated him without much trouble.
So even though Nadal took the beating of his career in GS matches, it gave the Argentine sky-high motivation and confidence that he could do the same against, at that time, best player in the world.

1) Delpo was a great hard court player. Better on hard court than clay probably...(None of the big 3 ever lost to him on clay)
2) Hard courts are arguably Rafa's worst surface
3) Running doesn't do much when your forehand can't be seen
4) IF they had played as often as Fed and Delpo did, Rafa would probably have a similar lead
5) IF Delpo had not faced as many injuries, they both would have losing h2h :D

In fact Canas never won a single set in the 3 matches against Nadal. While in the 3 matches he beat Federer he straighsetted him twice..

The match thread for that IW match will confirm everything that you say. Most of us Fed fans in that thread said at the time, "OMG, he's relapsed into choking again. This doesn't bode well" and it didn't. He held 3 MP's and blew them all. After that, four more dismal losses while holding MP's:

2018 Wimbledon vs Anderson (1 match point)

2019 Madrid vs Thiem (2 match points)

2019 Wimbledon vs Djoker (2 match points)

2021 Doha vs Basilashvili (1 match point)

yeah, pretty sure past his prime Nadal went close vs peak Djoko in 11 in slams even beating him once while prime Fed couldn't.
Oh no wait. It was prime Nadal getting his a** kicked to all corners while past his prime fed beat Djoko at RG 11 and had MPs vs him in USO 11.

oh and "Ol' Rog" leads the h2h vs Nadal on grass and hard courts , even thrashing him repeatedly black and blue when 35+

Dude you’re barking up the wrong tree, I’m the biggest Ol’ Rog fan here. The OP is a very humble RAFAN. I’m just big enough to admit that RAFAN has taken the lead in the GOAT race. Also you might want to edit your poast.

nice try at diversion after being exposed. Nadal worse than fed on 3 of the 4 slams, YEC, 4 of the 5 sets of conditions. only thing he got a lead on was slam count (thanks to worst period of open era)
Your post was a OUTRAGE, an DIGRACE and an SCANDAL!

Nah man, again even as a Rafa fan it’s very, very evident to see that Fed is better on the majority of surfaces. I don’t see how Rafa can be the best when he’s not as dominant as Djoker or Fed on grass or hardcourt

Not true! The OP is just being far too humble of a RAFAN. I’m just giving his guy props by conceding that he has surpassed my favorite player of all time. At least I still have that pretty BH to marvel at

No way dude, as the biggest Ol’ Rog fan on the forum, nay the planet I have no choice but to face the music. RAFA has taken the lead in the GOAT race with his record breaking 21st schlem. He’s beaten Joker and my favorite player Ol’ Rog in bigger matches on their favorite surfaces moar times than they beaten him on clay. I hate to admit it, but it is what it is.
