I have to say I did not like one thing Fed did during his press conference.

They asked him who he thought would win the final. His answer:

"I don't care."

He also made it clear he won't watch.

Oh, my. Not cool. The correct answer is, "Gee, I don't know. One of them will be winning their first slam, which is a really great moment for any tennis player. They both deserve to be in the final, that's for sure. I think it will be a really competitive match and the fans will love it."

Now, how hard is that?

but it also should not be expected or required

I am in no way a Fed fan - I'm so pumped he lost - but I would match rather hear an athlete speak the truth than spew some politically correct garbage if it's not what he/they believes (see: New England Patriots).

Post-match interviews consist of 95% politically correct garbage.

Every top player who loses believes deep down that they didn't play their best and they would have won if they had. They have to force themselves not to offer excuses. They don't want to give their opponent proper credit.

They must hold all of this in, because it would be ungracious to say it.

The Williams sisters say it.

i dont like fed...but im honestly surprised he would say that....i thought his answer would be like "i think it can go either way"

Cindy, try and put yourself in his shoes.

Fed had to do that press conference within 15 min of losing a huge match. He has a ton of pressure on him, albeit from his own work on the court (winning so much), but it's pressure nonetheless. To boot, Fed does not like Djokovic very much. That is a known fact. So to lose to someone you don't much care for or respect is tough. Compound that by the stage on which the match was set, and you can better understand.

Obviously, I have never played at that level of tournament. But I have played and lost close matches where things were on the line. It's not fun. I didn't really care to talk too much afterward. You're tired, burned out, and just want a shower and sleep.

I don't blame Fed. If you think it was bad, you should see some of the press conferences from the past from former #1's. He's a champion, expected to win, and he didn't. Not much fun.

I personally thought it was pretty funny. He was pissed, and expressed it in his own way. It's nice to see some emotion from Fed, as he is usually so diplomatic and stoic. But he has let it be known how he feels about Djokovic, and I think we saw more of that today in his press conference.

Also, don't forget: he is #1 because he doesn't like to lose. So he is having to talk about something that he didn't enjoy. Most people can politely exit such a conversation, but ATP players get fined for doing so.

Fine. He was unhappy. He doesn't like Djokovic (which, BTW, is probably a significant part of why Fed played so badly).

The answer then is: "You know, I think it would be great for the grame if Tsonga were to break through."

Ouch. What better way to diss Djokovic than that?

somewhat i believe he felt some sympathy towards djoco when he made that ******* trip in the first set. it was 5-3 then after that it all when downhill for fed. Anyways i could understand why fed hates djo, takes forever to serve and though his jokes are ight it kinda anoying. anyways its a professional sport and Fed is pissed but he is rooting for Tsonga like i am. GO TSONGA- damn he looks like muhammad ali...

I am a big fan of Fedex..but i must say i didnt like the way he was getting teary eyed in the pres confrence.You lost ..take it like a man...now you know what others feel.Djoker has always had this swager about him.I think his off court comments and lack of Fed worship is what made this lose painful for fed...but come on dude...men dont cry..suck it up

Geez, I've never come close to crying after losing in tennis.

Horrific piano recital? Yep, had some tears with that.

Yeah, I didn't see him crying, either. He was probably still sweating, and undoubtedly wiping the sweat from his eyes.

I haven't cried from tennis since my 1st tournament loss as a kid, when my Dad proceeded to tell me everything I had done wrong. Not good timing. This topic reminds of a famous movie quote, but I'll rephrase it: 'There's no crying in tennis!'

Cindy you probably love Blake's interviews. Always PC, rated PG, scripted, sterilized and homogenized.

Well, he is one of the best of all TIME
so you have to cut him some slack there.
he's used to getting to the finals of every grand slam,
and playing extremely well then.
so it can't be helped that if he's a bit angry with himself
this was a blow to his pride i'd say
and that obviously hurt him a lot
but i still believe he still has some guts left in him

His interviews kill me. He's too frikkin nice. I just don't get the sense that he has that killer instinct that is necessary to compete with the top 5 consistently.

I personally enjoyed the Federer interview. I really respect his candidness. It's nice to see someone hate losing that much. It pretty much guarantees us that we will see a much better effort out of him the next time these two guys meet up.

Federer has always made it clear that he plays tennis. Not that he watches it. I appreciated his candor, I prefer it over thinly veiled "class".

Its not forbidden. He simply said what was on his mind, and if some people don't like it, that's tough. Its not a requirement to congratulate his opponents(which sound fake about 90% of the time). Besides, he must have felt quite annoyed with his play in this AO.

Cindy, how can you even attempt to think that a pro athlete who has just laid it all out there and lost is going to use his/her best judgement. Athletes have people that coach them in their interviewing skills, giving them a laundry list of generic garbage to say all because there are people exactly like you that harp on every little detail that comes out of their mouths.

Would you want someone coming to where you work and putting a camera on you and then precede to nit-pick everything you did and said. Lighten up.

Fed had to do an interview right after the loss. Keep in mind that he's not used to losing, ESPECIALLY in Grand Slams. I don't think you can take what he said seriously because of the situation. Ask him the same questions in a couple days and I bet he'd giver kinder responses.

I don't think I have or ever will cry after losing in a sport. The emotion that always gets me after a loss is anger.

Oh please....he was pissed, so Tennis was NOT on his mind...or watching someone else since NO GRAND SLAM this year! You ever hear about Pete or Agassi after they'd lose...they would later say they DON't wat ch the finals either.....

Well, he wasn't exactly crying, but it was a bit emotional. What everyone has to understand is that no matter HOW you look at it, he is one of the best tennis players of our time. You CANNOT argue that no matter what points you bring up because the numbers, his performances, EVERYTHING just shows it.

Now, he loses the semi-final to Novak, who's a great young player. But like he said himself, he's built up a sort of monster where everybody expects him to win, and when he doesn't, he gets criticized and his game becomes questioned. THAT'S WHY HE'S UPSET, PEOPLE. Not at the fact that he lost, necessarily. Just that people can't get off his back about this. We're all contributing to it when we talk about how his game may be "slipping," which is why I don't do it. That press conference came almost right after the match, and for people to keep badgering him about his abilities is simply frustrating.

I'm sure that he's disappointed about his defeat, but he's more disappointed at people who keep talking sh** about his game just because he loses a match. HE'S HUMAN.

The question was "who will win". Obvious choices for the answer were a) Djokovic, b) Tsonga, or c) I don't know/I have no idea/hard to say ect. His answer was to the question "do you care who wins?" Which was not asked.

I'm surprised at the excuses offered.

Every player who loses has to do the same thing: give an interview when they totally don't feel like it. When they are disappointed or embarrassed in how they played. When they'd rather be anyplace else.

Why should anyone feel sorry for Fed just because he wins so much? If anything, he should be *more* gracious in losing than others. At least he can say "Well, I won 12 slams already, so I'll survive to have a shot at the next one." What can a Gonzalez or Baghdhatis or Nalbandian say? Every time they get bounced from a slam, the Grand Slam Champion flame flickers just a little bit.

Roger will have a slow decline to tennis oblivion, either now or later. This is inevitable. If he is smart, he should think about how he wants to be remembered: bitter spoiled baby or gracious champion.

Really, does anyone believe Sampras when he suggests he doesn't mind if Roger breaks his record? But Sampras is smart enough to know that he must be a bit disingenuous for the sake of being gracious.

i agree it made me grimace a little bit when he said "i dont care"and when he said he wasnt gonna watch it (the final) it didnt seem so classy to me ...on the othjer end when nadal was interviewed he almost worshipped tsonga which seemed really classy wtg nadal!...buttttttttt it makes me wonder if nadal will jsut accept that tsonga will always destroy him now or will he work on what he needs to work on....from rogers reply it at least makes me think he was unsatisfied and will definately do what he can to try to avoid getting beat by djoker again...who he obviously cant stand lol .....so there u have it

He didn't offer any excuses. He said he doesn't care who wins. Which means he's not "rooting" for anybody, not necessarily that he won't watch the game. He can't say he wants one of them to win...so he said he doesn't "care". He could have used different wording, but WHY ?? I also agree that there's too much bullsh1t talking in the post match interviews. He just gave a straight answer and there's nothing wrong with that.
I'm sick of "i would like to thank my mom, my dad, my grandparents, my dog, my little pig, my pants, my underwear, my sponsors, your sponsors, the tournament sponsors, my wife loves Garnier products (DOH!)" and so on.
He gave a simple answer to a simple question, and that's OK IMO. We are going too far with "political correctness" these days.
