I'm going to experiment with lead tape at 3 and 9 o'clock. I was flirting with the idea of using duct tape and pennies. I might still do that just to stay true to being a real cheapo. :)

You must be joking right? Pennies? That is a lot of weight also duct tape is heavy and maybe when you decide to take it off it will take your PJ off with it.

No harm being penny-wise instead of being pound foolish ...

Pretty!! Very nice pile there...good to see you have a yellow demo model in the mix. :)

Hope all are doing well and you are enjoying the start of summer (for those of us in the northern hemisphere).

I'm having a lot of fun with a great group of guys playing dubs weekly...I'm the weakest link of the four of us (too bad for them, great for me) and the combination of tennis and smack-talk is a beautiful thing.

Keep your eye on the ball and a smile on your face.... :)

The racquet flew out of my hand on a serve today. Luckily, it's not broken. I definitely need to get a bigger grip, as it's a 4 1/2" and I could benefit from a an increase in 1 or even 2 sizes.

If anyone has increased the grip size with heat shrink with the M-fil 300, can you comment on how the racquet behaves because of the added weight? I'm thinking 1 heat shrink sleeve plus TW's leather replacement + an overgrip.

I had to have mine shrink wrapped and also added two overgrips as all they had left was 4 3/8 and I am 4 5/8. With a little lead on the head counterbalanced in the butt mine weigh 12oz. They feel real solid and plow through the ball nicely. Serve is a lot heavier with the extra weight. I will look to do the same as you and try a leather grip instead as the handle does feel a bit bulky. Main difference for me is string. I have one with a multi (pro Supex Maxim Touch) which is uncontrollable and the other with a more tightly strung syn gut which has great control. Frames set up the same so go figure.

i added overgrips to all my mfils every racquet has atleast 2 overgrips excluding my pair of 4 5/8s, but with all those overgrips i get the perfect bablance and weight 11.5ozs

anyone experience arm=pain with the m-fil? Got mine at 12oz with syn gut. Played 2 matches on consecutive nights and have v sore wrist/elbow. Have small amount of lead on frame but lots of weight on handle due to grip size being too small. I thought heavy (ish) + HL = no pain but not so for me. Any suggestions?

Yeah the M-Fil can be a bit jarring on mishits. Maybe take a night off and try to keep it in the sweet spot. :)

Lol, I like that advice! Immediate reaction is to try another frame but when you do hit the sweetspot on a regular basis feels great.

It was vert windy playing the other night and I was having trouble finding any consistency on my groundstrokes which may have led to the arm trouble.

Another quirk of this frame(due to the short handle I think) is I seem to struggle with my 2-hander with it. I can hit 1 hander but only slice with consistency. Must practice more!

I'll say this, and I hit a two hander about 80 percent of the time, I think the handle is a bit short BUT what I do to counter that is with my overgrip (I use supergrap) is i wrap it all the way up but instead of trimming it, i wrap the excess a little bit up the throat until it feels about even with the rest of the grip and then I tape it off. That gives me the extra space needed without sacrificing comfort.

If you have switched to the MF recently, or customized it recently, your strokes/timing will usually take some time to settle in. That can lead to mis-hits/missed sweet spot, bad swing mechanics, etc., which can then lead to the issues you note.

Take a break, use ibuprofen/ice initially, then ibuprofen and heat to heal any damaged tissues. The worst thing to do is go back out again when you already are in pain.

For me, the MF feels like it is more sensitive to higher string tensions than other racquets I've used. Others seem to be fine with it at high tensions w/stiff strings... <shrug>

Down to four M-Fils these days (one broke a while back :( ).

Current setups:

2 - Gut at 50lbs (Klip Legend)
1 - Gut mains at 50/Iso Speed Pro crosses at 52
1 - Alpha Sphere at 55lbs

I know, pretty boring setups. :) The gut/iso speed pro hybrid is new, looking forward to seeing how that feels/plays compared to straight gut.

Still very happy w/my MF300s after all this time. I do get the "I wonder what else is out there?!" feeling once in a while, but I recognize it as the desire for change for its own sake. :D

LOVE-LOVE-LOVE-LOVE...excuse me, I need some time alone w/my Alpha. ;-)

Seriously, I like it quite a lot...

- Mark at Alpha provides amazing support, just really a great guy who goes the extra mile. All of the Alpha folks I've spoken w/have been very helpful. I really feel like I bought more than just a machine.
- Build quality is very good, the machine is really solid and feels like it will last a lifetime.
- Great features - really like the linear gripper, clutch and ratchet, 6 point mounting, clamps are DD

Here's a thread where I showed it when it arrived, unpack and assemble, etc.

http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=104946

So I've been very happy...depending on your budget, the Alpha Revo is also very popular. If you're stringing for a bunch of friends or want to make money (or just want to spend more money) you may want to go w/the Revo or other crank.

I'm not doing a big volume of racquets (mine, my kids/wife, and occasional friends) and the Alpha Pioneer DC Plus was the best combo of price/features/support/performance for me.

Cheers Redflea for the advice. I know you have lots of wxperience with these frames. I am struggling to find the right balance between power/control at the moment. At stock they felt a bit too low powered for my taste but when I added some lead the power was there but I lacked control. Thinking of putting a poly hybrid in there at lowish tension to gain some control without sacrifiycing control (the holy grail!)

Played against a 16 year old last night and got whupped, feeling past it today, at 34!!!

I too have considered the "demo" option but don't think thats the answer. Just need to find the right frame setup/string combo for my game.

^^ I have been tinkering with this decision as well concerning setups and here is what I have found to work best for me. I added leather grips to mine, increases static weight and makes the racquet more headlight. Addded an overgrip also which again does the same as adding leather just not to the same extent. I did put lead in the hoop but found I didn't like it as much up there as it decreased the swingweight to the point that I wasn't crazy about the frame anymore. Took the lead out, did a softer poly (head Sonic Pro) full job at 55 lbs and then put some lead in the throat and Eureka!! Holy Grail.

Interesting. You mean putting lead in the hoop increased swingweight right?

I like mine with lead at 10&2, 2 shrinkwraps and 2 overgrips weight is 12oz.

Awesome pop on serves but too much on groundies so going to try taming it with a Poly hybrid.

Definitely will try the leather grip out too.

Yeah good catch on the swingweight botch. I've never quite found a poly hybrid the I loved, esp with the newer softer polys I enjoy the constant response I get off the stringbed. I actually used ALU Power full job at lower tension and the racquet played like an absolute board, couldn't stand it, then I tried it with Multi (Max Touch and NXT) and then Syn Gut (Gosen Micro and PSGD) and it still didn't feel right. So I quit wasting $12 sets of string and tried out different ones and finally settled on two or three that I change out depending on how I'm feeling. My favorite of the moment is Big Hitter Blue, looks really sweet in the AG 300. Redflea is right on about the MFILs being sensitive to higher tensions, so try to keep it low if you can.

my best string setup for the mfil would be racquet number #3 in my sig., the kevlar gives the ball lots of bite and spin combined witht he low power of the mfil and the right technique it creates a killer forehand, which is my best weapon, also the stirng is cost efficent, its $8.50 on tw for the set, of hybrid 18g kevlar and 17g syn gut

A guy I played with in a league this passed year absolutely swore by the ashaway kevlar hybrid. Never tried it myself, maybe its time to break out.

I was thinking of going with BA 1.22 main and Supex Spiral Gut cross @ 54/56 but equally could do full BA at 54. Never used Poly before so idea of hybrid was to break myself in gently plus I need to be able to volley with it as I play mainly dubs. I have 2 m-fils so will try both as a comparison.

Let me know how that works out for you, I've never tried Pro Supex strings before, I'm interested to see how they perform. Don't get too hung up on the stereotypes of poly, I am able to volley very well with full poly, I mean its not Nat. Gut but I think it works just as good, if not better, than synthetic.

Will do once I snap the Maxim Touch I have currently. Very powerful strung at 55lbs in my m-fil. Nice feel but I would do 60 next time.

Supex strings are great value and perform very well. You cant complain at Syn Gut for $2 a set.

I currently have BA 1.22, Syn Gut 1.25, Maxim Touch 1.25 and Spiral flex in 1.30. Will report back on how they play

I'm liking the Gut/Iso Speed Pro hybrid...very comfortable (strung at 50/52 it should be) and good control/spin. It doesn't feel as different from my normal full gut setup as I expected, actually...

Yes, add about 4 grams at 3 & 9. Add some more in to the handle to get the balance you want. Maybe add some to the throat to keep it from feeling too flexy.

alright guys. i just got out there and bought an M-Fil 300. now i wanna know if it's a real one since it cost only $40. whati really wanted was an AG200 but i'm noob and might not need a small 95sq.size. and plus an M-Fil at 1/3 the price of an ag200 is worth it. came with an aerogel case and strung with "dunlop m-fil tour" string and i guess it's at 64lb since it said so on there.

here are some pics:

in the last pic why does it say "m-fil 300 tour"? does it say that in all the m-fil 300's?

hopefully i don't have to return this thing. i haven't played yet but the swing weight is heavy comparing to my old dunlop dyna-flex. now i just need to find someone to play with. what you guys think?

I'm assuming you meant swing weight...adding weight will increase the swingweight, just depends on how much added SW you want compared to static weight. The less amount of lead with the greatest impact will be at the very top of the hoop or 12 o clock position, and moving down will have less of an impact on increase in swingweight with respect to total weight added.

Also, cut out that string that comes with it and put a fresh job in there, I had it in my MFil 200 16x19s and I wish I would have just done that instead of play with it, its flimsy and not very playable.

no, i really ment swing speed. lol. but i dont need it anymore now. thanks.

so i went out there earlier today to test it out and damn.....best racket i ever used in my life. lol. this is only my 2nd one. my first was the dunlop dyna-flex. the m-fil 300 had a lot of power if i try. top spin was a lot easier than the dyna-flex. my swing speed was much easier to generate and much faster. the feel was awesome and pin pointing where to aim the ball was only a little easier than the dyna-flex. but control was good. as for serves.... haven't tried it yet. everything was pretty much effortless compare to the dyna-flex. the only thing i hate it the red. i never liked red thats y i wanted a 200 series. haha

however after a lot of power strokes my hand started to hurt a little. i think the grip size was a lil too big since the pain went away after switching back to the dyna-flex. i bought the wilson "micro dry comfort" grip and put it over the factory grip. thats y i hope. haha. or maybe i grip the handle the wrong way. i will still keep the dyna-flex to train my arm sometimes since it's a heavy weight.

overall i love the m-fil 300. for $40.....thats a few 5 dollars cheaper than my two fake yonex badminton racket. lol

are you suppose to take out the original factory white/red grip before putting on any other? and what does that "2" next to the 4 1/4 in that sticker mean?

o yea...i wouldn't mind joining the club. it's bigger than the AG200's. lol

It's been around a lot longer as well. Also if you like the 300, maybe look at the 200 16x19 also. Its a bit heavier stock weight and they have more grip sizes available here at TW. Some have referred to is as the M-Fil 250.

logansc

Professional
Not considering the weight difference, would you say the 200 16x19 and the 300 play similar?

Yeah fairly similar. The 200 16x19 plays a little more neutral than the 300. What I mean when I say that is that you control more of what the racquet does. I feel like the 200 has more power potential and is much more stable than the 300. Spin potential is about the same, but the biggest thing for me is against heavier hitters I don't worry about getting pushed around.
