Ok I m sure you have all seen it this am. And there may have been a thread about it already....... But someone please tell me why Johnny Mac thought it would be a good idea to give Fed a hug!! OMG wtf was that? That had to rank near the top for "most uncomfortable sports moments of all time" Please chime in with comments

Mac said Fed had tears in his eyes, so he hugged him.

Fed was about to start crying, I felt bad for him, that was a nice jester from Mac, though his commentating did seem very one sided.

I saw that! The expression on Fed's face was that of complete confusion.

I saw that - it was awkward. I think losing that must have been pretty emotional, and then having to give a little speech on-court and deal with all of the press is a lot to deal with in the space of a few minutes. He probably just wanted to get to the locker room ASAP.

i'm pretty sure all the french / swiss / and spanish interviewers afterwards were not only hugging them both but giving them those european kisses as well

lol

i thought it was in good taste that he gave him the hug. the guy looked like a kid about to cry (federer)

Yes, it was awkward. Kinda funny too. Potential to be mis-understood too. But well I know McEnroe. He is kinda on the emotional side....

It seemed awkward for sure. I wonder if Mac would have appreciated a hug afterwards on national television after that difficult 5 set loss to lendl at the '84 French open final loss after he was up 2 sets. I think i remember some commentator saying Mac wouldn't come out for the trophy presentation. Was that right? Anyways, Mac was only trying to help.

I think it was really really uncalled for.
he was like it was the best match ive ever seen so u should get a hug.

It was definately an inappropriate gesture after federer had lost in such close final

i guess SINCE THIS IS SUCH A DEFINING ISSUE OF THE MATCH LETS TALK ABOUT IT A LOT AND ASSUME MAC TAKES IT UP THE ARSE ON A DAILY BASIS NOW

lol at all these opinions

it was just a hug. lol

twas awkward, but i think it was an extremely nice gesture by mcenroe to try to calm federer a bit since he seemed rather emotional about the loss, and also to show his appreciation for how outstanding the match was

Yeah I thought that it awkward, uncalled for and inappropriate.

To make up for this Mac should meet up with Roger within the next couple days and offer him a gesture of apology some people like to refer to as a hug.

Yeah, by Bud Collins...

Would Mac have liked it if Bud Collins offered him a hug after a big loss?

It seemed to me like Federer was about to break down crying and McEnroe seeing this decided to just stop the questioning right there so Fed didn't wind up crying on live tv. I think that would have been much more embarrassing for Fed if that happened. I think McEnroe began getting a little emotional too after that match and seeing Federer in such an emotional state and being a fellow tennis legend he just had to hug him. Sh*t even I was getting a little emotional.

Actually I thought it was pretty funny and I don't think Federer minded at all.

guys, Roger had tears in his eyes. Mac did that so that he wouldn't break down in front of live tv. It shield from his face

yeah, when mcenroe said i know you're full of different emotions, he hugged fed and fed and they both teared up and fed gave the thumbs up to the camera and walked off.

i kinda turned my head for a second during the interview, but the last thing i heard from Fed was "Rafa just played too good" or something like that. then, silence, and that's when i turned my head back(to the tv) to see Mac saying "let me give you a hug".
to me, it did seem like Mac did that because Federer started to get choked up, and it did look like he was gonna start crying. and we all know how hard it is to talk while crying. so, i think Mac took a good que, and let Federer off the hook.
furthermore, as Fed was leaving the room, Rafa was walking in, and immediately said "i was crying too, for 10 minutes on the court".
so, i'm pretty sure Fed was on the verge of tears. as awkward as it was, i think Johnny Mac did Fed(and all the Fed fanboys) a favor.

Johnny Mac rules!

I saw this, it wasn't AS awkward as many posters are saying, but it was.. uhh.. a little awkward.

Mac cut the interview JUST SHORT b/f fed was about to turn on the waterworks, it was pretty emotional actually, even Mac looked like he was about to cry. Their eyes were both obviously misty.. thats the right word!

It was an odd momemt but I think he hugged him because the match was long and Fed did look like he would cry he gave it all he had but in the end Nadal is the champ:)

Guys, Federer just lost at Wimbelon for the first time after five years.

He came from two sets down to lose in the fifth.

I think anyone would deserve a hug at that point.

And you can also see tears were coming to his eyes as Mac was talking about it.

I think Mac knew how it felt to lose like that as a tennis player and just extended a kind gesture.

It was a little awkward tho. : ) haha

It wasn't bad at all. McEnroe did it because he didn't want Federer to start crying right there. He explained a few minutes later that he cut the interview short because Federer had tears in his eyes. It wasn't awkward- it was improvised.
