I have some 16 gauge in a flexy small headed racquet (The Kramer PS 85) and it's two years old.

I've had VS 17 last most of the summer a few times in my PS 85, but the 17 definitely isn't as durable as the 16.

Depends on gauge, your string pattern (open/closed) where you play (indoor/outdoor, humid/dry, etc.) and court (hard/clay).

For me, this summer (hardcourts) with a 16x19 pattern, my somewhat flat with moderate spin play had the 16g gut last 30 plus hours. When I play on clay courts it is much less. 17g broke in half the time.

Use string savers (not all over) strategically.

For me it is worth it. Gut's playability lasts much longer than any other string even if some string take longer to break.

I use 16g in the mains only, with poly in the crosses (hurricane or WC SS).

In summer (i.e. quite humid), the gut may last 4-6 hours, max. Maybe 2x longer in drier conditions. I've just started using string savers and they appear to help minimize the crosses accelerating fraying of the mains.
