im righty but starting to do few things with left. i hate noticeable arm size.

Righty who wishes he was lefty. I play golf and hockey with lefty sticks. I have a backhand slapshot.....I didn't know when I started that the blade could be for a lefty or righty I thought it was the same for everyone.

I'm a natural left-hander, but due to some pre-existing phobia from my parents, who had me a couple of months after coming home from living in China for 18 years, I was taught to play right-handed, and grew up a righty, as that's how my parents wanted it to be, I guess. I hit a 2-handed backhand, which many professional teachers and coaches have told me it might be the most natural and technically perfect shot they've seen from a non-pro player. No lie. I'll get a vid up in a couple of months, when I go back home to the states. Jo11y has seen me play (albeit not well) and he can attest to it as well. For other racquet sports such as Squash and Table Tennis I can play with either hand. For 2-handed sports it doesn't matter. Hockey, Lax, Baseball, I all do switch handed. I am right footed, though. I write with my left hand, but I can do it with my right hand (not well) and I do most common applications with my left hand (eating, sewing, etc...).

Good question. I mean, I'm glad I'm lefty when I play tennis, or when it makes me stand out from the crowd, but...
Darn bottle openers, can openers, scissors, cameras, saxophones, guitars, violins, power saws (lefties have to cross their arms), frying pans (with that pouring lip on the wrong side), rifles, checkbooks, etc etc etc...
And don't get me started on those righty desks...I had to struggle with those since Kindergarten. Everyone talks about equal opportunity, but what is this?

I had the same problem with the desk, man. It was tough getting through high school. Very tough.

Desks are a pain for us lefties. however, Saxophones? I have no problems playing the sax, and if anything it's better for us because the left hand keys require some dexterity that is trickier to develop if you're a righty. I don't know what your complaint is there.

When playing the sax, you are supposed to hold your left hand over the top keys and your right hand over the bottom ones. I personally found this difficult, as the right hand had to support most of the sax's weight. Might just be me, though.

A lot of us lefties tend do some things right-handed simply becuz we have to be able to function in a right-handed world. Curiously, altho' I serve much better with my left arm than my right, my right arm is my preferred throwing arm. I have some across a couple of other lefties like this.
I have met many natural lefty people from China & India that were forced to write and eat with the right hand. However, when it comes to sports these people have don quite well as left-handed players.
In the US, sometimes the righty conformity is forced while with many the coercion may be a subtler or even unconcious programming. Many times parents will hand food & other objects to the right hand of a baby -- even tho' the baby has not yet established a preference. This tends to program a child to develop the right hand more than the left.

I write with my right hand.... but play golf left handed, swing a bat left handed, open bottles left handed, my 2 handed BH is better because the swing feels more natural on that side etc..
Even though I do more things left handed, the fact I write with the right hand makes me a righty in my eyes.

I think it's a lot of fun developing the off hand. I started using my left hand for layups in basketball. I soon realized how big an advantage I had by having the option of either direction in basketball. The advantage is a lot less in tennis, but I sometimes horse around with the left hand when I play beginners. Ironically, the serve is the most difficult thing to master with the off hand and it's where I'd get the biggest advantage in the ad court. I can hit lefty groundstrokes and I can hit a lefty 2hbh, but the lefty serve would be a great thing to develop if I could ever master it.

Again with the 'advantage' with layups. Rickson, EVERY single basketball player should do layups with both hands, depending on which side you're driving to the basket.
That's how the fundamentals are taught. That does not makes you ambidextrous.
When you can shoot threes with both hands with equal ease (ala Larry Bird, or to some extent, Penny Hardaway), there you go

Ok, I just tried running around my room, and I tried balancing on one foot at a time. Everything feels the same... am I doing something wrong, or am I just oblivious?

You can definitely have a dominant foot if you're into martial arts. I'm right handed and left footed as well. I can kick with both feet, but I prefer the left for some reason. I also have my left foot in front when I skateboard and I imagine if I surfed because it feels more natural. Do most right handed people have their left feet in front on a skateboard or surfboard?

I get what you're saying. I unfortunately haven't had any experience in martial arts (which could be quite useful for me...
) I also don't skateboard, but when I do [attempt], left foot forward. Right foot forward, I'm well on my way to falling off and cracking my skull on the ground.

If you jump over a hurdle, do you jump off the left or right? This is the one weird move for me because I jump over hurdles with my right foot, but for anything else, I prefer the left foot. I even prefer layups off the left foot! I just can't figure out why when jumping over objects, I prefer the right foot.

I'm a rightie all the way. But its amazing how many here are lefties. Isn't the overall population of lefties something like 10%? And, yes, in some countries the cultural tradition was to make everyone a rightie.

Note that you can also be left-eye dominant for right-eye dominant. This is not necessarily contingent on which eye has the superior acuity. I am predominantly left-handed but right-eyed. This makes me cross-dominant.

It's not. We are proud of being lefties, and that's why we post in this thread. You don't see every righty on this forum posting here. It'd be pointless

Of course it's the righty way of jumping for layups and it's my stronger launching leg and that's why it's unusual that I prefer jumping over objects with the right foot rather than the left. One possibility is that because my left hamstring is more flexible, I prefer to launch with the right foot so my more flexible left leg is in front of me instead of trailing.

I'm a righty, but played my less skilled high school teammates left handed for a few years just so I'd have a challenge when I played them. Now, if an opponent hits behind me or I just can't reach a backhand, I'll hit a left handed forehand. I have hit a few passing shot winners with the shot, but mostly I use it to throw up a defensive lob. The surprise on a new opponent's face is great when they ask after the point "Did you hit that left handed?". I can play ping pong equally good with either hand.

Why don't you improve your kickserve, then?
A lefty slice serve will always bounce low. Most people find it easier to hit a hip-height BH return of serve than a shoulder-height BH return of serve

I play tennis lefty but serve lefty and righty and hit overheads lefty and righty. My two hand back hand is really my hockey forehand(slapshot) I made a list since alot of people ask me if I am more lefty or righty. I am 50/50 certain things I am lefty and others righty and some I can do with either one. I can shoot my hand gun righty two hands and just as well lefty one hand. But when it comes to the shotgun I shoot righty but have to close my left eye. Since I am left eye domiant. I should try shooting the shotgun lefty then I will not have to close my left eye. I was told 13% of the world is lefty.

According to a couple sources, about 7-15% of the human population is left-handed. I recall reading an article quite some while ago that studies indicated that about 25% of the the population should be left-handed, but more than half of all lefties are coerced into righthandedness.
Any one see any figures on eyedness (dominant eye)?

I'm right eye dominant, with the whole "look at distant object through gap in fingers test", but when I shoot my friends' bow (hes crazy) I close my right eye... I leave my left eye open.
I see that I'm just of mess of pseudo-dominant preferences.
