When did the champions peak?

I thought this would be an interesting thread...when did the former champions/world number one peak?

Roger Federer: 24-26 years old
Pete Sampras ...its a tough one...
Mats Wilander: 24 years old
Stefan Edberg: 25-26 years old.
Andre Agassi: I would say 29 years old

as andre agassi proved in his acareer, his athletisism marched him to the top when he was younger but even after loosing a step his court awareness and perception of the game moved him thru the ranks again at an older age.

its a major combination of both

Yeah,i guess thats true,and...Gil Reyes magical "fitness-drinks" aswell!:)

yeah everyone seems to have those milky looking watered down something in the bottles on court now. but you can tell they are horrible to drink because they always grab a pure water as fast as possible after taking a gulp or two

Really? I actually havent noticed,i was referring to something else,pure speculation that was going on when Agassi had some 5 set-matches at the age of 30-32 and didnt even looked tired...Someone said that Gil Reyes must have given Andre some "magical fitness-drinks" or something like that:)

nadal, miurray, roddick, djoker. watch at point change overs... its typical for them to take a drink of water, then 2 big gulps of this milky looking mystery unlabeled liquid then reacvh frantically for the water again to wash it down.. then back to court.

truthfully, agassi took training more serious in his later years of his career, he is a vegas boy so he can go a few miles and workout in extreme altitudes, not sure what he did tho.

look at Jerry Rice, his extreme training carried his career thru extreme amounts of time. of course he is a mental rock on top of everything else.

Becker: 21 years old. The 1989 Becker had total focus.

Edberg: 25 years old. At the 1991 US Open, he played his best ever tennis.

Courier: 21 years old. At 92 Roland Garros, Jim was a beast.

Rafter: 25 years old.

Sampras: 24/25 years old. Back in 1995, Agassi challenged Pete and forced him to improve. The 1995 USO and 1999 Wimbledon were Pete's best.

Agassi: 24/25 years old and 29 years old. In 94, by hiring Gilbert, Andre learned how to construct points. In 1999, he improved his fitness and serve, where it was a weapon at times. IMO, The 1995 AO and 2000 AO had Andre at his peak.

Roddick: 20/21 years old. The summer of 2003.

Federer: 24 years old. Fearless shotmaking.

Nadal: 23 years old. I feel this is the best of Nadal.

Actually I think Chang probably peaked around 24 when he reached the final of the 1996 U.S. Open against Sampras. If he won he would have take over the number one spot. He also reached the final of the Australian and lost to Becker.

Chang finished number two for the year.

I would say Sampras peaked around 23 to 25, maybe even a longer length. Sampras had his best year overall in 1994 when he turned 23.

Yeah you're probably right, I actually remember him playing some really good tennis at Indian Wells in 96 also.

Sampras that late? 94-97 I think are Sampras' best years. I can't really say his peak as Sampras had 4 solid years basically equal.

Statisctically I think 94 Was Pete's best year. But That was kind of the beginning of his prime.. Im not sure it was his peak though. I thought he was playing better a few years after that even though the win loss record doesnt indicate it. And who knows. He was playing some lights out tennis even in 1999 had it not been for the injuries. I never seen Pete play like that at Wimbeldon as he did in 99

agassi is an exception to any rule, he was a monster in every aspect of the game, made more changes to his game than any other pro during their careers and had insane natural athletic ability to boot.

Pete Sampras: I would say 1997. Which is 25-26 years old.

Weak Era

1- Any time when Nadal wins on clay.

i.e. Nadal won Monte Carlo because its a "weak era".
