I've noticed, the only person that can stop Fed's GS Final Form is Nadal

Just looking back on all of Fed's many Grand Slam wins, there's only been one person to take Federer to 5 sets in a Grand Slam Final, and that was Nadal.

All other competitors (Agassi, Gonzalez, Baghdatis, Roddick, Soderling, Safin, Djokovic, Murray, Hewitt) have tried to put up fights, but either lost in straight sets or only 4 sets.

It's like Fed turns up the gas in the final, it's kinda scary to watch how agressive he plays in finals and hammers through them. And if they do make it to 4 sets there is at least one set Fed wins where they only get 2 games off of him (6-2 or 6-1 or even 6-0 set).

Nadal has been exempt from that except at the Wimbledon 2006 final. Other than that he's at least taken Fed to 5 sets every time or even withstood the assault and beaten Fed.

That's crazy to think about. Hoping for a speedy recovery for Nadal's knee. And congratulations to Federer.

^^^Good point. That's why some people were/are talking about "weak era",which i don't agree to.I'd further add to your point that if Nadal wasn't around,Fed 'd have 20 slams today.

yea, Fed really must get into an amazing mental state before a final because he plays ridiculous in those matches. He hits the ball harder, he plays smarter, its kinda scary. I like it.

Great post. I'm gonna pray nonstop that Rafa recovers and continues to play his best. Federer and Nadal are way above everyone else physically and mentally.

Mentally? So now Federer is mentally stronger than Djokovic and Murray? It's not like he had the hardest slam win in history. He collapsed against Rafa in Australia and he has been consistently beaten physically and mentally by Murray. It's nonsense to put Federer in the same bracket as Rafa.

You're nonsense to say that in terms of slam finals Djokovic and Murray are on par with Roger!! Fairwell. How many slams does Murray have bud? And how many does Djokovic?? And then, how many does Federer? Whats Federers record in slam finals??? 14-5....djokers??? 1-1....murrays??? 0-1....yeah, thought so, good man, fairwell.

I didn't say that Murray and Djokovic are on a par with Federer in slam finals. I'm not sure where you got that from. I said that Federer is not mentally stronger. He's suddenly mentally stronger because he had a very fortunate slam path, despite people calling him a mental midget after Australia?

That could all change after the FO win followed by Madrid win. Fed will be playing with monkey off his back now. No more talk about will Fed win FO. So I think he actually figured out and gave in to his stubborness way about playing Nadal. So to prove that point, I hope Nadal and Fed both get to the final at Wimbledon this year to see what will happen.

I want to throw a disclaimer in here:

Agassi was playing Federer who was roughly 10 years younger than him.

Agassi I think is capable of handling the Fed's Final form. But he couldn't the one time he played him

Only people like you and a few other *******'s were calling him a mental midget etc...Fact is that Rafa is a bad match-up for Fed! (and he has always been from age 17 with his high forehand loops to Fed's one handed backhand)...It's a lopsided H2H because majority of their meetings have been on clay...and to add to that Fed isn't even at his best anymore...

btw if Fed is a mental midget then what does that mean for Murray?

Wait... Federer is not stronger than Murray or Djokovic, but that doesn't mean "Murray an Djokovic are on the same par with Federer"? How the hell does that work?

I didn't say he was a mental midget. I said other people did. And what do you mean? It has nothing to do with Murray. How many times has he beaten Federer from a set down? When Murray loses, it's because he got outplayed. I've never seen Murray mentally throw in the towel like Federer has.

When has Fed "thrown in the towel" in a GS?

and how many GS finals has Murray played so far?

In slam finals.

That's what the guy said and that's what I responded to. I didn't say that Murray and Djokovic are on a par with Fed in slam finals.

Reading isn't your strong point, I gather?

When has Fed "thrown in the towel" in a GS apart from Roland Garros 2008?

Australian Open 09.

And I'm not talking about just in slam finals. Don't you remember the match with Murray in IW? Murray fell over in the final set and Federer inexplicably collapsed and didn't win another game. The same thing with Djokovic in Miami.

Are you going to say that those losses had nothing to do with Federer being mentally frail?

You think Fed gives a hoot about Masters events after winning 14 Grand Slams? Anyways three set matches gets over very quick, so they are hardly a measure of mental strength...and like I said Fed isn't as good as he used to be...

Well those are MS tournaments, and he said his focus was slams, and he more than proved his mental strength there, while the other 2 fizzled out

How many more slams Fed would have won if Nadal was not around is more relevant. It's the the opposite. Fed has a Nadal complex (unless Nadal is exhausted, like in Madrid).

The point is that Federer would have many more french open and maybe even a couple calendar slams now if Nadal wasn't there. But if Federer wasn't there then Nadal would have a couple more wimbledons maybe but there are definitely other guys out there that can upest him, he gets upset way more often than federer.

Something that rarely gets acknowledged

No, you're right. Federer didn't look like he had a care in the world when he smashed that racquet against Djokovic.

No, he didn't. Federer did not say his sole focus was the slams. So you think he's going to just go through the motions in the other events and allow himself to slide down the rankings? Federer said that he tries his hardest in MS events. Everyone knows how much they matter.

Put it this way, you can win more points at the MS events combined than you can in the majors combined.

I get tired of people saying Federer doesn't care about "x tournament" when he loses. He does care about them or he wouldn't join them and wouldn't get frustrated in them when he loses.

But to say he "threw in the towel" in the fifth set versus Nadal is ridiculous. His backhand failed him and he couldn't do anything to get back in the match. He tried hard but it was too late.

I can't believe people said he didn't try in the fifth set, his game just failed him in that set.
