With Nadal now out of Wimbledon, it is time to make predictions for the Wimbledon championships. For Roger Federer to take the no 1 rank, he must win the title.

My quaterfinal predictions:

Quarter 1:
Juan Martin Del Potro [5] vs Andy Roddick [6]
-- with Nadal out, Roddick has a great chance to make his second GS Semi of the year. Despite his inexperience on grass, JMDP is too strong a hitter for guys like Hewitt or Ferrer to beat. There is really no one in his section with the power to match him. In Roddick's quarter, he may have some problems. Jeremy Chardy and Gregor Dimitrov are dangerous floaters, but Roddick's experience should be too much. Likely 3rd round opponent Melzer is 0 - 8 vs Roddick so that should be easy. However, potential 4th round opponent Berdych could be troublesome if he puts his head on. However, experience will lead Roddick to the quraters

Quarter 2:
Andy Murray [3] vs Fernando Gonzalez [10]
-- i believe the repeat of their QF in Paris will occur becuase Gonzo is once again blessed with the gift of drawing Gilles Simon, who ironically might loose to Hanescu again. Kendrick power will not bother Murray and in the miracle the Gulbis wins his 1st match, he will play right into Murray's ad. Wawrinka could be troublesome, but is way too inexperienced in grass to beat the fan fave. Gonzo's 1st two matches will be against slower court players so he should breeze to the 3rd round. Ferrero could be a problem, but doesnt have Gonzo's firepower

Quarter 3:
Tommy Haas [24] vs Novak Djokovic [4]
-- with DP moved to the top half, Blake, who has never made it past the 3rd round here moves in. Djokovic despite his mental issues, is too good to loose early on in 2 straight majors. He also benefits from drawing Shutler and clay courter Robredo. Haas, the tourney's biggest darkhorse, will benefit the most from Nadal's withrawal. Blake is a loose cannon, and Cilic has yet to prove he can make it past the 4th round of a slam. Wimbledon will be a tough surface for him. look for the vet Haas to cash in

Quarter 4:
Fernando Verdasco [7] vs Roger Federer [2]
--Need i explain putting Federer here. As for Verdasco or Tsonga, i chose Fernando because hes been rock solid all year, and has only lost to top 10 players. Tsonga has the power, but im not sold on his confidence. I can't see Kohl taking out Roger, but he could challenge him. Same for Soderling.

Quarter Matches:
Roddick def. Del Potro
Gonzales def Murray -- my surpise upset
Djokovic def. Haas
Federer def. Verdasco

Semis:
Roddick def. Gonzalez
Federer def. Djokovic

Final:
Roddick def Federer ---- I hate Roger so i could not get my fingers to make Federer the winner

I agree with most of your predictions but murray or roddick in the final and Fed winning. I would really love a Roddick Fed final. That would be sick!

Gonzalez is a good claycourter, but he's only made one quarterfinal here at Wimbledon. I don't think he can upset Murray.

If there's gonna be an upset in the quarters it will be Haas taking out Djokovic. He just did it at Halle, so it'll be an interesting rematch.

Final:
Federer def. Roddick

clayman2000 - I actually thought it was a decent prediction until that last sentence. If you think Roddick will beat Federer, fine, but saying that just because you hate Fed doesn't exactly make your post a prediction. A prediction has to be objective - you predict what you think will happen, not what you hope will happen.

I love that clayman is the OP on a Wimbledon thread. Wonder what grassman would have to say about all of this? Or maybe he's just got the munchies.

Sad about Raf withdrawing.

(semis: Andy vs Andy, Roger vs Haas or Djerkovic....but I'm for Haas)

Anyway, I think, in the final it'll be Murray's retro Fred Perry against Roger's pseudo retro pretentious Nike.
Anybody's guess who wins that final. 5 sets, hopefully.

May the best man win!

(I'm for Roger: 4-6, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6, 9-7...sort of like last year, only with a totally different concluding 3 minutes).

1. Hewiit loves to play big hitters, especially on grass. I'm calling the upset here with a Hewitt Roddick quarter.

2. Gonzalez won't beat murray on grass. Murray is a much better grass courter. i could see roddick beating murray

3. Troll to the max on the last part

OK guys. Now I'm willing to accept that ARod might have a shot against Murray - but some of you fancy him really strongly - why?

Their head to head is 6-2 Murray. Murray has won their last 3 and 4 of the last 5. Since their only grass meeting (a straight sets win for Murray @ Wimby) one of them has got bigger, faster, stronger and has improved his serve beyond recognition - and his name's not Roddick.

roddick has improved a lot since their last grass meeting. Roddick's serve is amazing on grass and he is a much better mover now. he is more confident, but i dont think he is a heavy favorite, I just think he has a really good shot at pulling the upset. Murray has improved a lot as well, but Roddick is more experienced in slams

For the angry fans for me saying Roddick def. Federer.... i am saying that i agree that Federer should win, but i really dont want him to. While I do believe Federer would be heavily favoured, I just have this gut feeling that Roddick is due against Federer in a slam. The last time I had this gut feeling was Miami 08

Reason for the Gonzo upset is because i think he likes players like Murray. While you would think the opposite, Gonzo likes counterpunchers because he moves pretty good, and has variety for a power player. Also, I am still not sold on Murray being a big slam player. Gonzo has made a QF here, and also remember that he beat Murray in Paris. While it is a completely different surface, Gonzo likes grass, Murray is neutral to it, and if Gonzo can blow Murray of a clay court, he can certainly blow him of a grass court as well

As for Del Potro over Hewitt, i chose Del Potro because a less then healthy Nadal killed Hewitt. In this case i am merely picking the higher ranked, more confident player.

I totally agree with your predictions (especially Roddick beating Federer) and people are saying that Roddick has no chance against Murray, but think of it this way- Murray has SO much pressure put upon him not only to win a major, but win in his home country, and Roddick has virtually no pressure because, he said it himself, he isn't one of the people in contention for slams these days. I think we'll see an American in the final

Sorry - but the statement in bold is just plain silly. At the age of 29, Gonzo is 19-12 on grass and it is the only surface he hasn't won a title on. At age 22, Muray is 29-8 and has won a title. His 1st ATP match win was on grass. His 1st slam match win was on grass. His 1st slam QF was on grass. In what way do those numbers show that Gonzo 'likes' grass but Murray is 'neutral' to it?

I think you underestimate Murray here, the pressure used to get to Henman a bit but Murray is a totally different animal. He's quite a cool and relaxed character who has the best possible people around him, i'm quite confident the pressure isn't something he will be feeling anymore than the other majors.

[q]Quarter Matches:
Roddick vs Del Potro
Gonzales vs Murray -- my surpise upset
Djokovic vs Haas
Federer vs Verdasco[/q]

In agreement in the match ups, but not the results.

Potro will beat Roddick - He can handle the serve and has his own.

Murry will lose to gonzo

Hass will beat Djok - just as he did eariler. Hass IS playing like it is 2002. Very serious game right now.

Fed will cruse past Verdasco - a poor man's Nadal if anything.

From there a bit murky, but I don't see anyone able to beat Fed there. He will have extreme confidence vs anyone there.

I actually think Roddick's chances have gone WAY down with Nadal out. Roddick is my fav too.

I say DP will loose to Roddick even though DP beat him good last year in Washington. Firstly Roddick is a different animal now. Secondly, we do not know how DP will play on grass. He doesnt volley very well, and his movement is far from great. Roddick however is always trying to come to net, his serving right now is pristine, and he is moving amazing.

I have Gonzo over Murray for reasons states above

I am taking Djokovic over Haas becuase Wimby grass is a fair bit slower than the warmup tourneys. Djokovic can play a little safer. Also he has a cakewalk draw to give him confidence, something he didnt have in Halle

Completely flawed logic. If he can blow him off clay, he can blow him off grass? As surfaces they are complete opposites. And Murray is not neutral to grass. It is a very good surface for him. Sorry, but you're kidding yourself if you think Gonzo has much more than a puncher's chance against Murray on a grass court or a hard court.

gonzalez's backhand disadvantage screams out more on faster surfaces as he has less time to run around to hit forehands all day..on clay he can..also he is natural mover on clay..murrays advantages magnify on grass.

i don;t even think roddick will make the quarters. he is injured. he could even lose to chardy R1 if the grass plays slow. chardy is fantastic player.

Roddick insulted Murray for owning a pink hat. Roddick wore a pink hat to mock him, then he twisted his ankle on a grass court edge. The careless clown managed to go too far and let his bored personality backfire in his own face for the millionth time. He somehow made Murray look genius without doing a thing on the tennis court. Brag about those "wins" that involve injury, girlfriend distractions, weight problem and avoidance of tennis work by Roddick.

Was that feeling due to the fact that Federer was still suffering from mono at the time? :-?

Stop chatting breeze, the mono was a load of crap.
You're right. Murray should have never lied about having mono this spring. That was not very nice of him. Even his doctors proved he didn't have mono.

OTOH, Federer's doctors in both Switzerland and Dubai confirmed that he indeed had mono. And it was very clear to everyone with eyes that watched the AO '08 that he was obviously very ill.

You're right. I just unluckily watched him defend Federer's superstar character for the 20000th time...and saw him limp off the court against the biggest con-artist Blake... and wave good-bye to his 8 teen fans.
I've to sing: It's too late to apologize.

Um....because he's not a sissy like Nadal or Djokovic?

Because the doctors in Australia misdiagnosed his illness as being food poisoning?

Because he was the defending champion and would lose a lot of points if he didn't play and also risk his #1 ranking?

He did pull out of Kooyong the week before and was bed ridden that whole week.

If he had mono he would not have been able to get out of bed let alone play 6 matches in the searing heat of Australia, stop making excuses just because Djoker took him to the cleaners and kicked his ass.

No, YOU would not be able to get out of bed. You're NOT Federer.

Normal people don't make it to 20 consecutive Grand Slam semis, nor win 5 consecutive Wimbledons and 5 consecutive US Opens.
