I'm sure he has his share of character flaws, but based on everything I've seen and (reliably) heard about him, claims of his villainy seem pretty ridiculous.

I dont think so. He the most well liked player by his peers on the ATP tour. I much rather believe what his buddies in the ATP say about him rather than armchair critics at TW

No he sucks, he's a terrible player and a terrible person. I know him really well. He told me he's just in it for the money. He doesn't even like tennis. He said he'd rather be a wall street banker. He doesn't love Mirka either. He hates her. But it's a business thing. Image, you know. I'm glad the word is finally getting out on this guy.

Yeah, he's the worst. And man, when I want info on how guys really are in real life, I come to TW and get the perspective of people that have never met him or anyone that has met him.

I think Fed is an absolute ass. He steals purses from old grannies and then pushes them in the street, he steals people's pets, he carjacks his opponents cars so they can't get anywhere on time, he badmouths everyone on earth, he fakes illness and injury, he kills line judges when he incorrectly challenges a call, he's responsible for both WWI and WWII (and Vietnam, fwiw), he voted for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad twice in each election even though he isn't a citizen of Iran, he was best friends with Saddam Hussein, he hates puppies, he hates kittens, he'll disown his child if their first word isn't "GOAT", if you love your dad he hates your dad, if you hate your dad he loves your dad, and finally, he's been at the crux of every cult ever on earth including Jonestown and Heaven's Gate.

I think that pretty much sums him up...It's a wonder that he's duped enough people into liking him.

Maybe the opinions of so many of his colleagues in him getting that award supercedes your shock (i.e. stupidity)? Talk about trolling. You're a hypocrite.

is he really that much of a gentleman, ive heard from many of tws own members and from many people that he maybe is an evil bad person?

He seems to be a bit odd or eccentric, perhaps. He appears guarded, yet cordial and does tend to occasionally downplay his opponents achievements as opposed to commending them on their play in post-match interviews. However, he also berates himself when he feels he hasn't played well.

I wouldn't call him phony, though... and not even close to evil or bad.

Nah, all those guys that vote for him are just a bunch of *******s. His opponents want him to win, the tournament organizers want him to win, so every win that he has is essentially meaningless.

I'm also pretty sure that we have empirical evidence that God himself (or herself, ladies...) is a *******, and has thus cursed Nadal's knees, because even though Federer has won seven matches against Nadal, it might as well be zero.

Yes, he's evil. He's a day walker and to keep his powers he must drink the blood of newborn babies and virgins.

Nadal is a saint, he gives his blood and connective tissues to the needy. That is why he is so weak lately.

There was a old French lady struggling up the three flights of stairs so Uncle Toni told Rafa to slash his biceps and let the lady suck some blood out of him to keep her strength. Next, Nadal rips out some of the ligaments and cartilage from his knees and grafted them to the old lady.

The next day, he lost to Soderling.

Are you happy now?

Being well liked by most of the ATP counts for something ya know. I don't think you can be a bad sportsman and still be liked by most of your fellow colleagues.

Sportsmanship also takes place ON the court... and Federer is one of the best sportsman out on the court.

1) he doesn't grunt
2) he doesn't take unnecessary medical time outs
3) he doesn't retire (only once in his career!
4) he keeps the game flowing smoothly, doesn't keep opponents waiting, etc

I say on court is where sportsmanship counts the most anyway.

He seems nice enough on Facebook...;)

He is super nice on facebook because he writes and posts things that you really wouldn't expect a professional athlete to do but that not why I think he is nice. There are two factors that make me believe he is a nice guy without a doubt. Santoro and Safin like him.

Santoro is a really nice guy and a veteran and from what I have heard seems to be a pretty good judge of character.

Safin is not the type of guy to bs people so if he says that Fed is a good guy then Fed is probably a good guy.

Those things you list don't mean anything. It's all on how friendly and humble you are. While it's nice for his opponent to have those things listed, they aren't necessary.

In all seriousness, though, I will say to those who badtalk Federer for things he has said in the media---Have you ever had a moment of frustration where you've said something you regret later? I sure have, and I make mistakes everyday. I suspect pro tennis players are the same way :)

IMHO #1 doesn't really count but the rest are valid points. It's the way Fed play on court why ATP pros vote him.

I think Federer is just a very frank and honest person who answers candidly when someone asks him a specific question. It may not always be the most diplomatic answer he could give, but I think he answers honestly and speaks his mind. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I think some people try to be too politically correct all the time and that's when they come off as being "phony". Sometimes the truth hurts. There's nothing phony about that, IMHO.

I am just curious why Nadal never won one of those award. Is it that you guys are the only one who see Nadal as the really nice guy that he is, but everyone on the ATP tour is blind. It is possible that you guys are so perceptive, but then again, those ATP players who see Fed days in and days out don't know anything about him but you guys seem to know so much.

The way you talk it's almost like you believe that you know more about tennis then the pros. Oh wait, you do believe that!

Well, the telling sign to me is that even the players who don't get along with numerous guys on tour respect Federer. Robin Soderling, for example. It reminds me of how you could tell Goran Ivanisevic and Tim Henman were genuinely nice guys; both of them got along just fine with Thomas Muster, who made numerous enemies throughout his career with some of his antics.

The truly nice guys generally are able to get everyone's respect...and they stay out of war zones and pick their battles.

The thing with Federer is that he is brutally honest in his interviews. I remember watching the Darren Cahill interview with him after his QF at the Australian Open this year and chuckling when Cahill said before asking the Djokovic question, "I'm sure you'll be diplomatic about it, but..." I knew Federer wasn't going to mince words on the matter and would call Djokovic out for his BS over the years.

I will say this, though: If Terrell Owens said half the things Federer has said, he would've been lynched by now.

But I personally find that kind of honesty in interviews by an athlete refreshing.

I met Fed (not bragging, just giving context) and have a convo with him (my tennis coach got me to talk to him, as he was my fav tennis player back then, after he finished practicing with some swedish player) in 2002 and he was really nice and and really funny. No arrogance detected at all..

That being said, I didn't talk to him right after a tough match and he wasn't GOAT yet, but I still don't see him too differently. I don't like press conference Fed, but I'm sure he's the same old guy on the practice court.

People need to lay off his case, he's no Roddick or Mcenroe.

Sampras set the standard that the top player should be some politically-correct, bland, gentleman-type character. Why does Fed need to fit this mold? Does no one else remember bad-ass Fed (i'm being facetious) from before 2004 with the ponytail?
