Wimbledon is so boring...

Where are the serve-and-volley players?

I can't stand long rallies in Wimbledon. It's not the place for it. This is becoming a dead art, but I truly hope that this playing style comes back from the ashes some day.

Even on clay and hard courts, I can't stand when pro players hit that sick shot and don't rush to the net, staying like 6, 9 feet behind the baseline. I mean, come one, tennis is a sport where you have to take all advantages you can possibly get.

Sorry for the rallies fans, but especially in Wimbledon, I enjoyed watching Sampras, Henman, Rafter, Phillipousis, Rusedski, and that kind of player. The grass around the net is not even touched!!!! Come back, killing approach slices!!!! Rallies are for RG.

i still don't understand, why was it necessary for him to retire? or am i being horribly insensitive / ignorant of the rules?

The funny thing is that back in the 90s, when the S & Vers dominated, people complained that it was so boring - ace after ace after service winner after service winner. Guys Like Sampras, Edberg, Becker, and Ivanisevic ruled the roost back then. There are probably a lot of reasons that style is dead now, but the most important seems to be that juniors don't learn it much because the rackets allow one to hit returns so hard with topspin that the server can't advance very far into the court before having to hit the volley. In the wood racket days, you had a slower serve and slower return, and could usually get inside the service line to hit the first volley.

This might be one of the main reasons indeed. At that time baseliners wouldn't get much sucess on grass, and even on hard courts serve-and-volleyers ruled. But what pisses me off nowadays is the fact that many, and I mean MANY, players hit a sick shot, powerful, with plenty of angle, throwing his opponent totally out of the court but STILL they don't rush to the net. And then the guy can recover and the rally continues, and not rarely he even wins the point. Finish the point for Christ sakes.:D

it's the best match

It's amazing indeed! 4 aces in a row for Becker was fantastic!

Llodra apparently hurt his abdominal area when he fell onto the ball girl and the umpire's chair area. :(

Wow I've just heard of it on TV. That's very sad. Hope he gets better soon.

Sorry to the OP but while I respect your opinion I have to say that I completely disagree. S&V tennis is incredibly boring to me. 2-3 shots in a point is just not very exciting. I much prefer a long rallie on any surface. I also don't care for the grass in general and would like to see it go away. Too many players get hurt on it. I just find S&V tennis to be a tactic by players that are not as accomplished from the baseline as a means to cover up their weakness.

No problems man:) You also have your opinion, and I respect that as well.

I just don't like to see the same kind of game no matter the surface. Certain ones offer advantages to some players, and IMO they should be able to play with those advantages.

Also, I grew up watching those guys winning Wimbledon all the time, so I miss it:(

I agree with the OP, There may have been shorter rallies but the quality was so great, and exciting... And to the others, there is a difference between serve and volley players and just servers, servers could be boring, always gets mixed up, very annoying!!! serve and volley tennis is amazing

The call for going back to the fast courts has not been loud enough. I would estimate that its far quieter than the large scale backlash against "the world serving championships" we saw in the 1990's. We used to have articles in the paper saying how Sampras serving his way to another Wimbledon was boring. I don't see too many articles complaining that Federer and Nadal's styles of play are 'boring'.

I don't really have an strong opinion either way - I don't want it to go back to the 'world serving championships' nor do I want to see the death of serve and volley.

I think playing from the baseline is covering up their weakness at net and insecurity about their serve, but that's just my opinion. Long rallies are fine every once and a while on a fast surface and I like them on slow hard and clay, but on grass and fast hardcourt I would much rather see a guy follow his serve in and put away the easy volley.

People won't complain about federer vs nadal wimbledon finals as it sells tickets its entertaining and gets high ratings so why they would anything change

As for serve and volley imo its extinct no player in the top 100 even does but it comes down to the slow grass and improved technology of racquet's

I'm with you. It's not that I want tennis pro tour to be as it was back in the 90s. I just want to see more players with different styles. Every style has its strong and weak points, but watching how well players manage them to defeat their opponents is truly amazing. I mean, Sampras x Agassi was always a fun, exciting game to watch. So was Sampras x Chang, Rafter x Kuerten( in a more recent age ), and games like that.

But watching serve-and-volleyers playing against each other was fun too. trying to guess what one would do to counter attack a player whose strentgh was the same as his.

Dang, I wrote too much.

Taking a look at where you're from, I understand your attitude.

I like tennis, I enjoy watching tennis. No matter which player is on the court. No matter the surface. So I like to watch the best tennis I can. And, at this moment, the best tennis is in Wimbledon. I just wish they could play differently.

Sadly those days are gone for now,we have to accept it.Until they speed up Wimbledonto its 90s speed),slugging from the baseline will remain being the percentage tennis and players will not be motivated to improve their average net games.

Well, it's much more exciting with longer rallies without people volleying and ending points. Besides, it's hard to volley at the pace that the ball goes nowadays.

Navratilova, the queen of S&V, once said that modern racquets & poly strings make the S&V game extremely difficult. So, I don't think it's just the slower grass.

I agree that volleying nowadays is much harder than 5-10 years ago.

Thing is, improving your net game is a way to make you a better player, having more weapons to change the pace of the game and win the game. Also, you'll be able to play against a larger number of players, because you'll have many more ways to beat them, taking into consideration their play styles.

That's what I enjoy in Tennis. That's just my opinion though;)

Watching it on TV I was actually struck by the speed of the court. For some reason it seemed faster than I remembered.

Anyway, I don't think making it faster will bring S&V back. If you make it faster then rallies will be shorter yes but most guys will just use a serve+forehand combo. Racquet+string technology+the way most modern players have learnt to play = no serve and volley. Court speed is not the most significant factor. You had Edberg and McEncore S&Ving succesfully at the French in the 80s.

S&V is dead. It has nothing to do with the speed of the surfaces. It's all because of modern racquets, strings, and what is taught the most when they're young.

All serve-volley is boring too. I'd like it better if they mixed things up in today's game. Very few do though.

Very very few indeed. I hope some of today's young baseliners( Nadal, Murray, Djokovic, DelPo and others ) improve their net game so we can see more all-around players.
