Is Marion Bartoli fat?

I was watching her 1st round match today, and she can really hit the ball hard, although her serve motion is so weird... She has O.K. movement compared to the rest of the WTA. However, she appeared obese to me! Is she grossly overweight, or is she just strangely muscular but looks fat?

You'd have to know her Body Mass Index - You can find online calculators (need to know height and weight).

She may be a bit overweight (BMI >25) But I doubt she's Obese (BMI >30).

They can't all look like Hantuchova or Dementieva :)

I haven't seen her yet this tourney, but definitely in the past she has clearly been overweight. However it is not uncommon for women in skill-based sports to be overweight and still performing well. It has less negative impact on performance than men for whatever reason, probably because women naturally have a higher body fat percentage.

Pictures please for evidence of "obese" of Bartoli

just kidding. I don't have any pics of Bartoli playing her match today. I looked her up and the pics of her I saw looked kind of fat, but not as fat as she looked today. actually, in one she looked skinny

Im just as tall as Bartoli maybe slightly taller. And she weighs 128lbs and I weigh 155, so she is of healthy weight (her BMI is 20.6), which is very low. Obese is any BMI over 30, she would most likely have to weigh 200lbs to be that.

Bartoli is actually in better shape than she was a couple of years ago. At Wimbledon in 2007 she was indeed a bit fat, but since then she has trimmed down and gotten in better shape. She could stand to improve her fitness a little more, but she has improved a lot since she made the Wimbledon final.

Curious how Bartoli looks "fat" on TV and how she looks live, I got to see her in New Haven and she doesn't look fat. Obviously she is not as toned as the other players but she looks good. She doesn't look heavy like she does on TV.

No, she STATES she weighs 128#... just like a 6'2 Sharapova states an official weight of 130#

I think she's slimmed down since I first saw her..
Yes, her serve is VERY awkward, and I really don't think she weighs 128, but.. I don't know..
months ago, I thought she looked VERY heavy for a tennis pro.

I'm skeptical because I know someone who is 5'2, 125 and looks skinner than bartoli who is 4" taller and weighs only 3lbs more.

Bartoli isn't fat she's just a little overweight. She may seem fat to some people but she's more chunky then overly fat. As they same the fatter they are, the more cushin for the pushin.

Body type is also a factor. I hadn't checked her weight/height ratios, only saw what people have posted here, but have always thought she looked a little on the heavy side, BUT she is short-bodied (or waisted, for those of you who know what that refers to), thickier though the middle, so she is bound to look heavier than a woman of comparable height/weight who has a longer body so the weight is more evenly distributed.

The use of the word "fat" is totally overplayed these days, imo. You have someone average size especially women, and you have morons unjustly calling them "fat". Totally overused word. There are players both male and female who could stand to lose a couple of kilos to improve their movement and overall play, but no players on the tour are truly "fat" in the correct definition of the word, and certainly not obese.

It all depends if you like ham or not ...:evil::evil:
She has big bones but she looks OK to me. Meaty - yes. Fatty - no.

Well "average" doesn't mean what it used to mean because nowadays the average person is fat, as in clinically overweight. So it doesn't matter if 20% of the population is or 80%, fat is fat.

long time no see... not sure if you're calling me a moron, but i want to clear up that i did not call her fat, i said she looks fat. big difference. i admitted that she may just be strangely muscular, as in have a different body type than most athletes, as you pointed out.

she needed to get bigger, skinny does not rule, muscle does and to add muscle sometimes fat comes along with it

She's not the only one. There's TONS of girls on the WTA who are FAT and get away with it. Davenport (ugly looks like a pitbull with her saggy face all scrunched up and everything), Petrova, and that one chick that dresses all costumey at wimbledon. Forgot her name. If guys were that overweight on tour they would end up... where justin gimestob is (retired). Lose some weight buddy. Good job roddick.

Not fat or overweight at all, but Marion will never have the traditional athletic body that we see on a Dementieva, for example. Seles and Davenport also had this characteristic, but with impeccable timing and the ability to hit a really heavy ball, you don't need the body of an Olympic sprinter.

A racket that is 2 meters long also helps..

But I agree.. she was pretty heavy a few years back, but she has lost considerable weight and i think she moves better than she used to do.

Most of the WTA look like they should be sponsoring the food network and starring as guests on the Paula Deen cooking show.

Davenport was truly big-boned. A tall & big-boned lady.

Bartoli on the other hand isn't big-boned, she's definitely 'fat' for elite athelete standard.

When you look at the other WTA players who bother to put in a shift on the treadmill (e.g. Sam Stosur), you gotta say that Bartoli's size is unacceptable for professional sports. Even lady golfers look more trim.

She's got more weight than a professional tennis player should....so does safina.

but more importantly, I'm watching her match right now and her shriek when she hits the ball is driving me insane. I really really like kim clijsters but I don't think I can handle listening to Bartoli hit the ball anymore. EEEK!! EEEK!!! EEEEK!!! EEEEK!!! EEEEK!!!

AHHHHH!! Plus, she's very unattractive..and I repeat, her shriek is mind numbing.

I was just thinking the exact same thing...The shriek, her ball (full body) bouncing on the serve, COME ONS!!! on UEs, she is incredibly annoying and I'm surprised that she hasn't been punched by her opponents in the past.

How tall is she? If she is 5'6 or 5'7, then no way does she weight 128. In the Wimby final, I would have put her at 150.

In the pic, she looks fine (although I do not understand why some female tennis pros appear to have arms and shoulders that aren't muscular).

There is a woman (British?) with light brown skin who is completely and totally overweight, plus she was crazy slow. I will never understand how a pro athlete in a sport like tennis would be willing to carry extra weight. It's not like you have to be anorexic to be considered tennis fit. Healthy living if you are a pro ought to do it, right?

+1, her "grunts" sounds like a poodle humping their owner's leg for a treat :(
