printing adhesive labels

Which label machine(s) would you recommend to print labels such as the labels I've linked to below? Ideally I could print all of these using the same machine, paper with adhesive backing for UPS labels(to print UPS prepaid labels using my UPS account number, from the UPS web site) and nylon or something similar with adhesive backing for tennis racquets and other things. Thanks in advance!

Most any printer hooked up to your PC, and an appropriate pack of Avery labels for the size you need. If you use Microsoft Word, Avery has templates for all their stock labels at:

or you could try Avery.com, I know you can print this labe with you Microsft Word format.

Thanks for the Avery suggestion, but I'd prefer somewhat to use a dedicated label printer. Other than BradyID and Panduit, there are Zebra, Dymo, Brother and probably others. I am looking for a thermal printer(which doesn't need ink) which can print 4x6 UPS labels on adhesive-backed paper from UPS's web site and also narrow labels for tennis racquets on adhesive-backed nylon or anything tougher than paper.

I found these, Avery 6577 Durable ID labels, 5/8" x 3", and though Avery's web site did not specify what the material is(I had thought that all Avery labels were different types of paper), on Amazon I found that they are polyester - which is good, and they are made for use with laser printers(I assume that inkjets won't properly print on this since it probably doesn't absorb ink), so we know that they can withstand the heat of laser printers.

5/8", approx. 16mm, is narrow enough for even the thinnest-beamed racquets made today.

This looks like a winner for my needs - thanks, and let's keep this updated as we find good solutions for label printing!

Avery doesn't have a template for 6577, though you could do it with their online design thing, but I was able to make my own grid/template quickly enough using OpenOffice.

The Racquet Doctor label looks like it was done on a label printer, though I don't know how they got the the logo on it.

You may also want to use MS FrontPage. I use it to design my business cards.

I use a Brother 2420pc label printer. It uses laminated labels and come in bright colours. I also use a Brother 55 hand-held one for when i'm at tournaments.

The racquet doctor label may have been printed using a pc-connected label printer rather than a standalone printer or a dual mode label printer connected to a pc. The pc connected label printers I believe have (proprietary) software.
For business cards I use Adobe InDesign to do the layouts which I send to a company which produces engraved business cards for me, but in the case of the Avery 6577 labels I feel that I am happy with the output of OpenOffice Writer and my laser printer.

I like this label. Been thinking about something like that for a long time. I wonder how much printer would cost.

I may yet buy one of these label printers for UPS/USPS use, while using the Avery 6577 labels & my laser printer for racquets. I've got two labels, one with my contact information, and one for the string information(one line for main string type and tension, one line for cross string type and tension, one line indicating the date the racquet was strung and that it was strung on an electronic constant pull machine.

When I used to get my racquet restrung at the club they used to put stickers on. I didn't care for it very much because the ones that they used were very hard to take off and I didn't like them scraping my frame to get them off the next time it was restrung. I string my own now and the people that I string for also don't appreciate stickers on their frames. I've been thinking about just including a business card with their string data printed on the back instead. I keep a data base anyway so the information on the card would be mostly for their benefit.

That's the reason I looked for labels made of something other than paper, which pills/rips when peeled. The Avery 6577 are polyester.

One thing about it - you have to get tape that is 1/2". And it cost i think $10 for 26' cartridge.

i just got it in the mail. it works fine. the only downside of it is that it doesnt come with the ac adapter. u have to either buy one or put 6 AAA batts in it.

one of the major pros is that it can work on any computer driver/program free. just plug and play. it also has alot of different types of tapes it can take. it can do gold text on black tape.. black on yellow... and even white on clear for dark rackets. if u want to change color, just change the cartridge inside. you can add your own logo on it and design is fairly simple.

cons is that it does not come with a ac adapter. another con is that the tape it comes with is only a demo tape. it comes half filled just like as if you were to buy a printer.

as far as 10 dollars for 26 feet of tape.. its not too bad.

each label is going to be around 4 inches at the max. that 78 rackets worth of tape @ .12 cents per racket.

i guess it adds up, but it sure does make sure ur client never forgets you.

Yes, sounds like this is THE printer for my needs. I have no problems using batteries - i just keep whole bunch of rechargeable batteries around all the time anyway.
But how do you go about font sizes and all that? Can you give me a bit more details please? Say how do you start and what do you use to print the text in? Ward or Word pad? Also, how do you figure font size and multiple lines and how do you add graphics? Sorry for all he questions, just want to get heads up.

i am getting the one that can print up to one inch. There was a sale at costco a couple days ago where you get 35 dollars off the original 70. If you buy a cartilage, you get another five. Just waiting for the printer to arrive as the cartilage already did.

Here's the output of my laser printer using Avery 6577 labels(compatible with 6571 template). I don't have Word, though(I use OpenOffice), so I just used Avery's freeware DesignPro.
I have another label listing my contact details.
I may yet get a dedicated label printer, but I am pretty happy with the polyester 6577 labels for stringing purposes and Avery's 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" labels (which actually output 4"x6" labels) for shipping.

I still like the ideal of $15 printer better. It looks like it is less trouble. Just turn it on, input text and hit print.

The main thing for me is that I'd like more than three lines, which is the limit for many of the cheaper dedicated label printers. Some of the pricier ones could do the job, but I don't know...I think I'll wait some time and evaluate the pros and cons patiently rather than rushing to buy a pricey thing I can perhaps make do without.

This is actually a big deal. There are numerous compatibility issues with various OS's using some label printers (including Brother -- notably the 1500). It is nice that this one is "self contained" and does not leave anything on your computer.

I use the 2710 and the Dymo Duo for printing labels straight from Stringjob.com (absolutely great and with many more capabilities for use at my business) but even though they cost several times as much as the 1230 they will not produce a racquet label that is any better. Very slick piece of kit!

Unless you need to print those large labels, i do not see why spend all that money.
I have that UPS printer. Now, come to think of it, it came free from my UPS rep. If you have account with UPS, ask your rep. They may throw it in at no cost. But it may depend on how big of a customer you are. I ship about 20-30 packages on daily bases from my other business so, they give me a lot for free.

I recently bought a 4" wide SA4TM Toshiba thermal printer from a UK label company and it prints my barcodes perfectly and it was only a few hundred pounds. I've never had a problem with it at all. I'd recommend a Toshiba printer to anyone - its fantastic.

And the Ribbons & printheads are really cheap for it too.

for any on the go stringers, that pick up rackets, its very handy to have this thing on the road. when i pick up rackets from clients i bring my netbook and this label printer. i print labels on site, then hang them up in my garage. no extra notes needed.

Just picked up the printer RJ has. Anyone know a good way to generate a logo cheap? Also if uk skippy sees this. Do you put plastic wraps with your logo after you string clients racquets? Like the P1 bags or **** etc.

20 bucks MORE for the PT-2430. The PT-1230 sells for $39.95 and the PT-2430 goes for $59.95. The latter has the AC adaptor and can print up to 1" wide labels. I missed out on the $15 deal on Buy.com, but label printing is not on my high on my wish list.

My wife laments that I have a box full of old power supplies. Turns out I had one that works perfectly. Finally, my hoarding pays off!
