Best iPhone tennis app?

The title says it all. What would fellow iPhone users like to see if somebody were developing a new tennis application for the iPhone?

I have one call something like 'Zen Tennis 2009'. I got the free version, which is on clay, but the full version you get different players, surfaces and stadiums.

I have TouchSports Tennis, it was on one of the commercials (I got it prior to that though). Just looked at some in the app store, I found Rafa Nadal tennis... Anybody try it?

I like "My Tennis Stats" better than the tennis tracker actually. This one lets you track stats for all 4 doubles players

Which app do you recommend?

I'm thinking about getting either the tennis tracker app or my tennis stats app for my iPhone to track my kids stats during their matches.

Have any of you downloaded either app? Do you recommend one over the other? It looks like they both have decent reviews and do about the same thing.

I appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks in advance!

I have both of the tennis point tracking apps. In my opinion, "My Tennis Stats" is the better of the two. As I stated in an earlier post, it allows you to track all 4 doubles players...which is great! I also use the no-ad scoring, and 8 game pro-sets quite often with my kids. These features aren't available in the tennis tracker app.

The only problem with "my tennis stats" has been a couple small bugs. However, I used their website and submitted the bug I found...and their customer support was great. I don't remember the guys name, but he worked with me and had the bug fixed in the next release.

there is a third app that looks nice but I didn't buy it so I cannot be sure.
It's called Matchstats.
You can track where the ball hits (on serves and also during points).
I think it's a nice features, especially to check the pattern of serves.
But again I didn't try it so I cannot tell if it's worth a shot.

Wow...thanks for the tip! The "my tennis stats" guys said they were working on something similar, but it was a ways off. I might have to try Match Stats!
Well, I downloaded the match stats program, and my first impression was not very good. I didn't think it was very easy to use. In fact, I couldn't ever bring up a "forehand" or "backhand"! I guess the program figures out if you hit a forehand or backhand, unless you hit a "run around" button? Also...there is no way people are going to be able to track the placement of every ball that is hit. I dunno...maybe it's just because I'm not very used to the interface yet, but it doesn't seem very user friendly.

Can you just track the hits on the serve or you have to track all the hits in a point?

It seems like you have to track all the hits in a point. For example, I clicked "Serve" (In) and then on the court where the serve went. The serve buttons disappear, and I can place the shot on either side of the net for each ball struck. However, it doesn't let me choose "forehand" or "backhand"! I guess it "knows" what they hit based on the placement? Not sure. Then I can either say 'winner', 'forced error', or 'unforced error' and where the ball hit, to end the point. That is the only way to increment the score that I see.

Well, I tried out the match stats on a live match the other day, and despite my best efforts...wasn't able to keep up. There is absolutely no way to track every ball hit in a rally. Especially when you have to go to different menus to choose "approach shot", "lob" etc. You also have to open up menus to select whether a player "ran around" a shot or not. I absolutely hate that "feature". On a ball hit right down the middle of the court, I have no idea whether the app is recording a forehand, or backhand. After a while, I was simply trying to record how the point ended (Forced Error, Unforced Error, or Winner). But even this proved too difficult! By the time I figured out whether the app recorded a forehand or backhand, I had already missed a point or two. And there is no way to simply increment the score.

I was still thinking about buying it
but now after your latest update I think I changed my mind
I wonder if all those 5-star reviews are fake.
Do u think with time the user can get used to the interface or it's jus a very bad design?-
tracking all the shots in a match is a lot of work
you need more focus than the players themselves

You wanna know who all the 5 star ratings are from? Watch the video on their website...and see who they give special credit and thanks to. The people that helped them develop, are the ones writing the reviews. With time, and a lot of practice...I think you can get used to the interface. However, not being able to select forehands or backhands drives me crazy. You have no idea when to use the "run around" button, because you don't know what stroke the app selected! Until they get this worked out, I won't be using. Oh, and they still have some bugs in the app as well. Right in the middle of the match I was attempting to track...I viewed the current stats, and tried to go back and enter more. Nope. All the buttons had disappeared. I had to uninstall, and re-install to get 'em back...and of course, that erased all my tracking data.

I'm still considering purchasing one, but haven't yet. Based on your last review of the match stats app, it sounds like it's not very easily to use. How are the other apps? Are they easy to learn/use?

Well, there are numerous things in each app that I like, and dislike. But yes, I think both 'tennis tracker' and 'my tennis stats' are easier to use. They both have similar user interfaces...and I was able to hop right in to tracking live matches, with very little practice. Like I said in my earlier post, 'match stats' was by far the least user friendly.

I actually have both programs, Tennis Trakker and My Tennis Stats. I have to say that Tennis Trakker is much better in terms of ease of use. My Tennis Stats is pretty buggy and hard to use. It crashed on my several times and I lost some data. Tennis Trakker also have a free version where you can try and see how it works. For $3 more, Tennis Trakker is a much better product.

By the way, regarding fake reviews all of them do: Match Stats, Tennis Trakker and My Tennis Stats (and I'm sure many other apps in the store). Look no further, just read the reviews 10SCoach gave to all three products in the App Store and you will figure it out yourselves.

What is "fake" about my reviews in the app store? I gave my opinion about each app.

^^^ it looks like a nice app.
I still think that the option to input the serve placement is very useful (T, body, wide).
Something like you have already for the net/baseline point.
Maybe you can implement it in the iphone version. :)

Well, any kind of placement tracing would require much more operator's attention. It is always a trade-off between the usability and the all-embracing ;)

The next new feature in Tennis Math is gonna be definitely backhand/forehand stats.

My favorite iPhone app is called "Doubles Partner". This is not a well known app. It allows you to record the errors, winners, and movement mistakes of yourself and doubles partner. A movement mistake is fairly intuitive, e.g., not coming in at the right time, failing to shift as the angle of return changes, leaving a part of one's court uncovered. The final category is divided into "Help" and "Hurt", and it mostly deals with service games. "Help" is when you do something that "Helps" your partner, like when you hit a big serve and your partner gets to crush a floater. "Hurt" is for things like failing to put away easy balls at net, poaching unwisely, leaving the alley open on wide kickers to BH, feeding net guy, etc.

Winners (W), Errors (E), Movement Mistakes (MM), Help/Hurt (HE,HU) are commonly tabulated during change-over, but I've seen people do it after every point. Regardless of when you do it, it's not a good idea to share your data with your partner, as this could lead to significant discord.

At the end of the match, the app calculates the percentage that each player has in the outcome. The other day I was 70% responsible for a win, while my partner was only 30% responsible.

The upgrade is supposed to have some interesting features. One is called "WPM" ("Who the other team is playing more"). There will also be a comment section, so you can carefully detail the reasons why your partner lost a particular point, game, set, match, or season.

This app is great for post-match league conversations, like when your captain asks why you lost. You can pull out your iPhone and say "I didn't lose, Steve did. He is 90% responsible." It works the other way too, like when your coach congratulates you for pulling out a tough one. "Steve was kind of along for the ride."

I'd have to agree with TennisMath, there's a fine line between including every possible feature and maintaining good usability.

We've just launched an iPhone App for coaches, players and parents and by far the greatest challenge was to ensure the user experience is right for each different user type.

Bottom line was, as most matches will be charted by parents & friends, it better be simple to use and easy to learn!

For coaches, we wanted to make their life easier, so they will use the app quite differently.

If you're interested to take a look, we'd be interested in your comments and happy to discuss.

I used to use have an iPhone and used My Tennis Stats but switched to Android for the bigger screen about a year ago. If anyone else is in the same boat there is a real nice one called Tennis Toolkit (www.tennistoolkit.com) that lets you track every shot using screen swipes and has the best stats and charting of anything I've come across.
