WTF: third RR match fixing possibilities

Rhino

I always remember in 2002 at the Tennis Masters Cup, there were two Spaniards in Group A - Carloa Moya and Albert Costa.

They faced each other for the final RR match of their group.
At that point Moya had two straight sets wins and Costa had one three set win.
Elsewhere in the group, Hewitt had one loss and a couple of three set wins.

Moya was already in the semis. Everybody realised that if Moya let his Spanish buddy Costa beat him in straight sets, then Costa would go through and Lleyton - who wasn't particularly liked by the players - would be eliminated.
As it turned out the spaniards played fair and Moya won the match.

Here in the final Group A match in 2009, Federer and DelPo also have the chance to make sure they both go through. If DelPo wins in three sets making sure that they both have a high number of games, then they could assure each other safe passage into the semis. Now of course this would never happen, but interesting that it is possible at all.

Fed should do whats best for himself, win the first set and retire so he is fresh for the semi's and the final. All how you spin it

Talk about this if it happens.

Murray can't complain. If it wasn't round robin. he'd face Federer second round and was out now.

I doubt Federer wants to give up a match to Del Potro, especially considering what happened in New York.

Even if Fed wins the first set, he could still not go through.

And equally so, if Del Potro beats Federer in three sets, Del Potro could still not go through.

They have to get the game differential right to keep Murray out and both go through.

If Federer loses in 3 close sets, I think he'll make it. He had two 6-1 sets and a 6-3 set in his first two matches.

This possibility existed in the football (soccer) world cup once, but after the 1982 controversy with West Germany and Austria colluding to ensure that they both went through at Algeria's expense, FIFA have made the last group games be played at the same time to ensure no match-fixing.

yeahh like it didn't happen again after that  I remember a match in Euro I think Italy-Sweden..? where it was so obvious it was disgusting. But of course in footbal you got the draw option so that makes it even more complicated.

It was euro 2004 Sweden-Denmark.Whole match you could see big banners in the stand- Draw-Scadinavia wins .final result 2-2.In last 20 mins or so it was so obvious they were just trading passes.
Italy did everything possible to win and after the hard fought goal the scorer finds out they are eliminated and from celebrating he got angry lol

I'm pretty sure I remember it happening somewhere else again but can't remember right now.

In this case Fed would be regarded as not completed all 3 matches & would be automatically eliminated, which is not funny

I remember that match too. The only possible way for sweden and danemark to both qualify was to make 2-2. Not 1-1 not 0-0 not 3-3 ... only 2-2.

And guess what ... out of nowhere they made 2-2 and Italy got disqualified.

I was so pissed ! :)

HAHA Yes.I had forgotten this detail.Only I remember very clearly the reaction of the poor Italian scorer. From heaven to hell.He managed to score in last minute to give Italy the qualification and then he finds out they got eliminated anyway.:(

But that match was sooo obvious. The players secured the score and then were walking in the court trading passes.

Antonio Cassano was the scorer of that goal. He scored the goal for a 2-1 win over Bulgaria in the 4th minute of injury time and then found out that Sweden had just made 2-2 through Mattias Jonson.

Sweden's equaliser for 2-2 was in the 89th minute of their match with Denmark.

Murray must be nervous watching how it's playing out. DelPo's game win/loss differential just went up a whole lot...

It has to be said that the outcome of the match, especially the last three games, was quite unbelievable in the context of this thread.

Del Potros winning percentage at that point - immediately previous to those three games - was 50% - slightly lower than Murrays. The ONLY way for Del Potro to qualify over Murray at that point was to win those last three games and take the set 6-3.

I'm just sayin'... :)

and Fed had 2 BPs at 15-40 3-3 3rd set. He must have been struggling to decide who to give it to, in the end chose Delpo!

Federer and Del Potro had a relatively long convo at the net after the match. I wonder what was said?

Del Potro: " Be Strong, Roger. It was for the best"
Federer: *sniff* " You are right. It was for the best"

Murray: "Hey, am I audi?"

:D

If they want to avoid this sort of controversy in the future, they need to either play the last 2 matches in a group at the same time or scrap the round robin format.

What controversy? There isn't any controversy... Delpo won and got to the semis fair and square. Did you *see* that last set? The lines that Del Potro hit to save that game in which he faced break points? It seems quite unlikely that that was all "fake" and "fixed."

The controversy is only in the minds of delusional fans Mustard or Firestorm who don't want to accept that sometimes, underdogs can pull through dramatic victories. Seeing how Del Potro played, I think he completely deserved it.

Federer so tanked those last few games but I think Federer was well within his rights to tank. He was already through afterall, and had no obligation to help other players get through.
