Stringing prices

Btw what are the regular stringing prices here in the U.S. This guy charged me $27.50 on my last stringjob! I believe he ripped me off. I used Wilson Enduro Pro 16 strings which cost $6.95. (Btw how good are these strings?).

He may be charging you a tad too much but its not that much... i work at a tennis shop and we charge anywhere between $25-$35

Where I string, they charge $15 for labor + the cost of the string (or you provide your own). I think that's a pretty good deal so you didn't get "ripped off", IMO.

in my town here its 15-20 dollars for stringing charges + the cost of the string..a full bed of lux costs 40 dollars here at the least

At my pro shop if you get Pro Hurricane Tour they charge $35+Tax Say they get the string for $10? That's $25 for labor. You can't blame them though. Their making their living off of stringing and tennis equipment.

That's why I string my own. In about 8 months I have saved around $1400. I have also made around $150.

Yeah, I have always wanted to have my own stringing machine and string my own raquets. Any recommendations where I could get one for a good price?

the price rarely, if ever, varies depending on retailer. choose the one(online) that offers fastest shipping(usually the closest one to you because *promotional* shipping is an exception with stringing machines, cases of balls, etc.

I have a Mutual Power. I have never had a problem with this machine. I was a little weary at first because it's on the cheaper side, but it works like a charm.

If you want to get one of those you will have to wait a LONG time. They there in stock but there not.

If you get Mutual Power you can get Fixed Clamps and a 6 point mounting top. If there is one thing I regret is not getting their crank instead of a drop weight just for time.

I usually pay $10. just get to know your local players you usually turn up someone who strings.
alternatively sometimes private stringers will post on craigslist.

I dont know how some of these places have the audaciaty to charge more.

unless you are in a high rent area such as NYC or tokyo.

places that over charge for stringing really turn me off.
its usually the casual/oblivous player, you know the one they sell PSGD to or "what ever the pros use" that they service. a good shop should do a string job in 20min so if they are effecient they will make money.
Shops shouldnt charge more to make up for their slow performance.

If you are not going to string very often, Klippermate is OK but the drop weight machines are a bit tedious to use and it's quite difficult to keep the tension consistent...at least for me. I upgraded to a crank tensioner last year and it's so much better! I got the Gamma XST from ******** sports. TW also sells a very similar Gamma stringer...almost the same machine but it's red instead of blue. I've read good reviews for the Alpha Revo that TW sells...but usually the manuals aren't very good, so you kind of need to know how to string ahead of time. there are some instructional videos on youtube.

Here is Aus pro shops charge anywhere between $25 and $30AUD. I've seen a local sports store charge $40 (The price of a full Lux ALU Power was $69 and that's $29 a racker here).

I'm a home stringer for my whole club and some other mates and charge $15 + labour.

It varies but we're about 92c (aus) to the USD currently. So I'd charge around $13 a racket. The sport store would be around $37.

Mind you not long ago I remember it being 60c to the dollar so that would have been me charging $8-$9, and the sports store $27 or so.

That's a general idea though.

What kind of rip off guys???

In my local shop, the guy only charges me $10 for labor, plus the stringing.

And he's sooo cool if you try out a hybrid set up. Basically, it's kind of like buy one, and get the other free. Idk if you guys really get it, but I don't really know how to explain it.

He probably charges for all of it then just strings your racquet next time you bring it in.

i charge $10-$12 depending on type of string. i've been charged with around $30 stringing fee at a club before. it's high but you have to remember sometimes it's the coaches that string them and they charge what their time is worth.

Try stringing a racquet in 20 minutes when there are customers asking you questions and the phone keeps ringing, and people need the know what court to go to and people are trying to buy stuff.

20 min. you say??
How about the time to check the integrity of the racquet for fractures/ cracks, and inspect the grommets(very important, as a slight crack unnoticed can turn into a new racquet for the client)
time to cut out the strings properly, and recheck the grommets again.
time to replace any broken/cracked grommet if present.
time to mount the racquet properly on the machine.
time to measure/cut string,
if nat. gut, time to manually prestrtch the string.
time to look up pattern if unfamiliar pattern.
time to string the racquet.
time to straighten strings.
time to write label, and mark down racquet serial # in log book.

All of the above takes time. I know what my time is worth. Over 40 years ago I charged $10.00 labor / racquet. Needless to say its increased over the years. Everyone should know what their time is worth.I am just a home stringer, but...
Keep in mind, shop owners run their own buisness.
Most posters here would have no idea of the overhead a buisness would have.
things like rent, insurance, payroll salerys, and taxes, utilities, accounting and legal fees, the list can go on for a long time but this list would be very long if I listed all. I know as I own a small buisness, (dental office).

Evidently Figjam has no idea idea of expenses a small buisness has to make a comment like that. Most small buisnesses has to produce a certain amount / hour just to break even.

You should only have to look up a string pattern like 1 in ever 1000 racquets.

i string from my home stringing machine that i bought and charge $10 labor, which imo is a fair price for my time spent on their racquet. but if you expect to have your racquet strung at a pro shop or store, $12-18 labor would be pretty standard.

Please refrain from posting useless remarks.

It is true a good stringer can read a string pattern from the grommets but that isn't always the case such as fan patterned racquets. Always better to be safe than sorry. What he posted is a very well depicted operation of a stringer and a high quality stringer at that.

I personally look up patterns just to be safe the first time I string a person's racquet. It is not unusual for an inexperienced person to mistake a pattern.

Now what kind of comment is that?

Hey, I had to string a T 2000 the other day. Years ago, I use to string a great # of them, but after years , it takes a while to do that one again.Since I don't string that one as often as before, I did need to look it up. I have seen that one botched up bigtime. A while back someone even posted a T 2000 with a good # of mistakes, (over a dozen mistakes), post # 297 at this link,http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=148752&page=15 . The T 2000 even has its own special knots to use, (that one has its own starting knot, and stop knot),so every so often something strange comes by, as a month ago, I had a Sterling racquet come in to string. I bet you do not even know the pattern for that one Steezmuffin, and if so you would need to look it up!, and you would have a difficult time to even find that pattern anywhere. Fortunatly I still had the stringing information on that one, that racquet does not even have any grommets, as it is a series of pins between two metal tubes, and the USRSA did not even have the pattern for that one, but again years ago I strung that one a # of times as a few locals had that racquet. You can't expect to remember all the obscure racquets that come by every so often. So what is so bad about looking it up?
Also how about the new releases, you don't bother to as least check on the pattern?
As my origional post said, time to look up the unfamiliar pattern, and once in a while it does come by, very possible you only get the normal ones, but how about new releases? (You did say, you only need to look up 1 in a 1000 racquets).
New releases do come by as well, and I like to be sure that the tie offs are where the manuf. specifies on those so I look it up, even if I would know the pattern as far as string placement.Thats great if you know manuf. tie offs on new racquets without even looking it up, and its not marked on the racquet. Thats a good ability you have! You must be the most talented poster on these boards!

Yah the holes are twice as big.

Yah the holes are twice as big.

Not all new frames. Many times I need to take an awl, to make them proper size to accomodate the tie offs,
or take the flare it tool to the grommets.
Also the size does not tell you if its a main tie off, or for the cross strings tie off.
Actually there is nothing wrong with looking up a pattern for an unfamiliar or new racquet. There should be no debate on this. Its why they have a digest available to stringers. Also like I said, I do get an obscure racquet every so often.

I'm stringing a racquet right now for a friend. He is using MSV Hex in the mains and Prince Lighting in the crosses. I am charging him $20. String adds up to about $6-$7 then another $1 for the stencil and then $12 for labor.

You get what you pay for.

Typical string job I charge 20. ( Usually takes me 15 minutes to do )

Accurate string job I charge 35. ( Usually takes me 25 minutes to do )

Difference between the 2?
I double check the tension on the accurate one with a meter used to check for elasticity.

I also provide a service that helps the player find the exact tension they need. This services includes up to 20 string jobs to find their preferred tension. I charge 200. Strings must be provided.

One question you should have asked before posting this was, " What were the differences between this string job and another ".

What's dropweights? A kind of s. machine?

Dropweights are simplest type of stringing machines. They use a weighted steel arm to provide the desired tension. They do require you to estimate the length of string you pull so that the weighted arm falls to as close to 90 degrees for an accurate pull. Though simple, you can quickly learn to string your racquet acurately on one and save much of the money of stringing. Since you will be doing the stringing, there won't be the variablility you might get going to different places or even the same place where multiple stringers may have stlightly different techniques. There a some excellent youtube videos that teach you how to string.

Check out the stringing machine section of talk tennis for information on stringing machines. The first place to check is this review of different types of stringing machines that Mansewerz was nice enought to provide: http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=213946

Other currently running threads of note incluce:
http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=320147
http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=318816

Just an opinion, but I think it would be hard to beat the Silent Partner Swing for an inexpensive but durable drop weight machine.

I secretly hope that pro shops / sports stores increase there prices every few years. Makes it easier for me to make more money on each job.

I charge for labour $10 friends only, $15 everything else. At that rate i'm not making money and my time is probably worth more.

If all shops raise price to $25 labour in 2010/11, i'll start feeling i'm getting a return from my time at $20.. still need to do atleast 50/month.

talking aussie dollars.

For me everything above $10 is too much (labor only). If you have something more lucrative to do then do not string racquets for other people. Btw, my friend who is surgeon is more humble then some people around here when they talk about stringing.

i agree, people act like stringing is something so skilled that you need a college course in it.
Its not that hard, and the better you are the faster you should be.
Hey ill be the first one to admit, $10 is not worth my time, so I dont do it. but then I dont lift a finger for less than $100.

However, if you string racquets for a living (at home)..... $10 for 30min= $20 and hour X6hrs=$120 a day X 5 days a week= $2400, not too shabby.

and you do have to realize, that no matter how good a string job is... its like food, its starts to deteriorate immediately, and will eventualy have to break....
so when I have 5-8 racquets that need stringing, in addition to the string cost it adds up in a hurry.

If I was joe schmoe stringing 2 twice a year , I guess $20 woud be ok, I wouldnt really complain, I guess they need to have "player stringing" and "chump stringing"

I do however cut out my old strings before I bring it to my guy.

$120 is minimum wage...

You're paid $100+/hr and won't even pay someone $20...

well I gave the exmaple stringer a break and gave him only 6hrs. then again he can trim his time down to 20min a racquet and up his income. its all up to him.

Hey, its like the people that work in industries that "rely" on tips for the income, sorry, dont do that job if you dont like the pay.

I give a good tip if your really good and cool to me, but just phoning it in does get much from me.
